How To Use Your Reins With A Green Horse

8 ай бұрынWelcome to my latest video on horse training! If you have a green or young horse, understanding the importance of reins and how to communicate effectively through them is essential. In this tutorial, I guide you through the process of teaching your green horse the fundamental meaning of the reins.
It starts with the horse understanding what it should do with the inside rein, then I show you how to keep a light contact on both reins and finally, how to teach the horse to give to the rein. This is the beginning of getting your horse "on the bit". I demonstrate this with Bonnie, a 4-year-old mare I have just started under saddle, so you can see it with a green horse.

Love to see the progress from very green up until more experienced . Takes a lot of work and patience but it is very rewarding 🙌🏻

I'd agree! I've only ever owned greenies. It's rewarding. And the progress together fills the heart with joy . And it's a lot of work ! 😂

Thank you. I had 2 days ago the same issue with my mare, she suddenly refused to move forward. I put her in the round pen and have her Trott there without me. Then I mounted again and it turned out to be a good ending. Thanks so much for mentioning this. I sometimes think I do something wrong when I run into an issue, because everyone else just post happy videos.

As a green rider this is actually useful to help me understanding steering. I always get muddled up with steering when riding and end up confusing the horse. Do you have a video giving tips on steering? If not I reckon it would be really useful to make a video about steering horses when you have the time :)

I just read your PDF - thank you that was very helpful. I am a first time horse owner (x2) and they are both green. I have had success with one but not so much the other, but rightfully so she is only 2 and still very curious and playful OTTB. I love the gentle and very logical principles you shared! I think I will print it out and take it to the barn with me as a daily reminder.

I love how on all your horses you are so good about giving them lots of slack, when you don’t NEED to have contact. Hope the boys are doing well, & of course the girls too. 😊 Hope you can sneak an extra 🥕🥕🥕for you know who😉

The boys are doing well. Hoping to scan you-know-who soon and maybe bring him back into work. I'm sure he is sick of "babysitting" Grayson (who still has his coconut and acting like it too 😆) and will be glad to get back to it!

Yes I did Love that!! -‐ its actually more complicated than i first understood & this shows just how careful you are & the importance of having the principles down pat in every interacction with ypur horse. Do you have a program for bringing a horse back into work or can you direct me to one please? I was sick for a few years and my horse hasn’t worked and I want to get us back into work and achieve my dream of getting back riding. I’m seeing an exercise physiologist but I want to get Gran back into work as I do so we are both ready.

Outside is the side closest to the fence

@@HeavensGateHorsemanshipnot necessarily - it depends what exercise you're doing. I think she means when to use the outside rein. Josie is teaching this mare the very beginnings of the concept of the outside rein - the balancing rein.
