How to vacuum a pool to waste : cleaning a dirty pool
My pool had sat over winter without being cleaned. I needed to open it as the weather was improving but it was very dirty. I live in the Canary Islands and we had the worst Calima on record for more than 10 years. A Calima is a wind which blows from the east and brings dust from the Sahara Desert which it then dumps all over the islands.
Buy a complete pool cleaning video course - products.swimu...
Why vacuum a pool to waste? There was far too much dirt at the bottom for the sand filter to handle so I needed to vacuum to waste so that the dirty water went straight out into my front garden and not back into the pool.
Whenever you are cleaning a dirty pool you really need to put the multiport valve on waste.
The problem with vacuuming to waste is that the water level in the pool drops very fast so you have to work quickly.
I started the hose running into the pool and I also have an automatic top-up so water was going back in. Even so, in the 10 minutes it took me to vacuum to waste, the water level dropped by about 6 inches or more.
My aim wasn't to clean the pool thoroughly but just to remove the worst of the dirt. A few days later when whatever dust I had disturbed had settled I gave it another good clean using the filter setting.
I have to say this is probably the most satisfying pool cleaning of the year.
The Pool Maintenance Course (written and video) I bought when I first got my pool. It was the best money I spent on my pool. Highly recommended - products.swimu...

That is a problem. All you can do is top the pool up as much as possible before you start, leave the hose running and then work as quickly as you can without disturbing the debris. If the level drops to the bottom of the skimmers before you have finished then you can just stop where you are, switch off the pump and top up some more.

You can use flocculant if you need to to make it settle. Then vacuum quite slowly on waste, ideally using a vacuum head without brushes (which stir it up) such as this one www.amazon.com/Fibropool-Professional-Flexible-Swimming-Vacuum/dp/B01JYX4WPW?tag=boogsuk00-20

@EasyPoolCleaning

Sorry Margaret, I am not entirely sure what you mean. Do you mean you do not have a dedicated vacuum port so you plug the vacuum hose into the skimmer? To stop the waste going through the filter you need to select waste on your multiport valve.

Another way is to use a robotic pool cleaner, which sucks the dirty into its own filter. What do you think?
@sdtube3

yes you can, but depending on how dirty your pool is, it may mean a lot of trips back and forth cleaning out the robot. I prefer the method in this video.
@EasyPoolCleaning
@EasyPoolCleaning Жыл бұрын
Agreed. When a pool is this dirty the filter in a robotic pool cleaner simply couldn't cope. Plus a pool robot moves quite a lot of water as it goes so it is likely to disturb much of the dirt which will go into suspension and then settle back on the bottom some time afterwards.

Good day sir. I just installed a pool at home. Currently i just vacuum the pool without changing the pump lever to waste option. Found the vacuum suction not so good and hard to clean sand on pool bottom. If I change the lever to Waste option like u do, will it improve the suction? Why its suction less powerfull if the lever not set to "Waste"?
@EasyPoolCleaning
@EasyPoolCleaning 2 жыл бұрын
It will probably improve the suction if you vacuum on waste. Before you do that you can try and improve the suction when vacuuming on the filter setting by: 1. Backwash the filter (as the filter may be clogged with dirt/debris) 2. Make sure that your bottom pool drain is closed so all the suction comes from the skimmers 3. If you have more than one skimmer, and have valves to control them individually, then turn off the valve to the skimmer/s you are not using to vacuum. If your skimmers do not have separate valves (mine does not) then you can push a tennis ball or similar into the hole at the bottom to concentrate all of the suction into the skimmer you are vacuuming from. I hope this makes sense.

You should close your drain valve half way of you have no suction. And if you have more than 1 skimmer you need to turn one off before you vacuum to filter. Vacuum to waste is usually done when pool is really dirty only.

@EasyPoolCleaning
@EasyPoolCleaning 3 жыл бұрын
I guess by that you mean that you have a dedicated vacuum port in the side of the pool? Whether you turn off the skimmer valve really depends on how much suction you get. If it is good then leave the valve open but if not then closing it should increase the suction. Thanks for watching.

@@shenk2210 That could happen if your waste line was somehow blocked or had a shut off valve you didn't know about, like the ball valve he opened in the video. It won't be easy but you can do it. The best I can suggest, if your pool is very dirty, would be to manually vacuum on the filter setting (clean setting on your valve) but stop every few minutes and backwash before the filter becomes clogged and dirt starts going back into the pool. Good luck.

From my understanding there is not a filter on planet Earth that will filter the green micro particles in a pool. It must be vacuumed to waste, correct?
@EasyPoolCleaning
@EasyPoolCleaning 3 жыл бұрын
The green will either be algae which can, to some extent, be trapped by a filter. But in my experience the only way to get rid of it is to shock to kill it and then, when it is dead and the water is clear, vacuum to waste to remove it totally. If the green is due to metals in the water being oxidized (so the water may have a green color but will still be clear) then a filter will generally not be able to trap that until it you have used a sequestrant.
