I love the way you do it. I cringe so hard when I see people poor a big puddle in the center and just smear around haphazardly. It's such a waste of varnish.

We need to change the narrative on that! I think it became a viral thing to do on social and it's a big no no..

Who cares. No one is hurting anyone doing that with the varnish. Why does it matter to people like you?! I pour it like that a little to get enough and I can't see that well to know it's enough I try to pour carefully because the bottle is very hard to pour and I'm not using trays but I won't make a big puddle others do but who cares it's not harming anyone. You should be more concerned that the varnish is still extremely dangerous and make sure others are protecting themselves better with gloves and masks that are proper and do it outside, that's a lot more important than attacking others and how they varnish their art as a trend. Not harming anyone so stop complaining and judging

I’ve just bought some! I’m fascinated to know why you don’t need to clean the brush!

It's a removable varnish, not permanent.. So it dissolves almost instantly when exposed to fresh varnish out of the bottle or with paint thinner. I also store my brush in a container in between to keep the dust off it.

Much like a pianoist with their hand coordination, your way of holding the brush is elegant and effortless looking. Something I've always struggled with achieving when doing brush strokes.

Hey Chuck, Thanks for posting this quick video including the links to the varnish and brushes, much appreciated. I asked you this question in one of your live presentations…”How many coats of varnish do you apply” and you kindly responded “Thin to win”. I also asked the question about the link to the blue Dagger Striper brushes, but you were using a brown handled one…. After telling me they were the Umbria grade, I went onto to Dick Blicks and ordered a couple along with a bottle of Winsor and Newton brush cleaner/restorer. Super brushes, lovely sharp edge for fine lines to do grass blades with. I also ordered a couple of the largest canvas boards I’ve ever ordered, a couple of 24” x 36” Ampersand Boards… an upgrade from my previous largest size of 18” x 24”… can’t wait to start my largest painting! Thanks for your very inspirational and informative videos, they are greatly appreciated by a retired Mechanical Engineer newbie like me who has lots of free time on his hands to begin oil painting, something I’ve wanted to attempt all my life, but was always too busy to find time…. Really enjoying it!! Cheers, Martin 👍👍🙂🥃🥃 PS: Another gorgeous painting by the way!!

Huh, I’ve never varnished my paintings before because everyone recommends a 6 month dry period for oil , is gamvar different? U can apply it as soon as the painting is touch dry ?
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 2 жыл бұрын
Longer than dry to the touch - the thickest part should be hardened.. Sometimes that can take a month+. A longer wait time like 6 mo would be referring to permanent varnishes. The paint needs to cure and gamvar allows that process to continue underneath.

Can you put glossy varnish on top of matte???🙏Someone please help because I’ve already done a coat with matte varnish and I don’t like it.. it’s also a bit streaky so I’m hoping that the next coat will fix it if I buy a foam brush

Interesting but you always need to clean your brush just wiping it no matter how little paint there is all varnish is completely wrong you need to wash it properly otherwise the bristles will harden and stick together and will be almost impossible to clean or use
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 7 ай бұрын
Gamvar is an exception to this as it is a removable varnish. Not cleaning the brush and just wiping it dry is the directions given by gamblin. Once the brush hardens, it softens up immediately upon dipping it in fresh varnish before your next use. I've used the same brush this way for years. 🙂

Is there an odorless or odorfree varnish thats safe to use indoors, if you dont have a well ventulated area? Or do they all give off toxic fumes, even if odorless?
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 11 ай бұрын
For fine art, I don't really know of a good one. Gamvar uses gamsol which is 99.995% pure meaning only .005% of the aromatic solvents remain. So it's fairly safe as long as you do it in a ventilated area and try not to breath it in.
@HoneeyBee3

@@chuckblackart thank you!! I've been reading so many labels lol. I had a spray one, kind of like fixative spray, but the odor and fumes stink up the whole house 😭, even with all the doors closed and windows opened in that room. So it would be nice to have a liquid one with odors or fumes that doesn't travel through to other rooms at least. I've been reading so many labels and they all say use a "well ventilated area", same with the spray, but stinks to high heavens lol. Thats good info on the Gamvar so I know what to look for. I'll give that one a try first! Thank you so much for responding right away! I wasn't expecting that! Subscribed just for your helpfulness! 😇

Have a question why varish your painting? Kathy
@chuckblackart
@chuckblackart 2 жыл бұрын
It provides a protective layer, but also keeps it looking "wet" which gives it an even and uniform sheen how it was intended. With gloss, I can bring out the depth and glow of it as well

It's not breathable, it's still dangerous and causes cancer. The last time I varnished around summer, I suffered a headache and I had to get a head scan and it was very painful. When I was born I was born with a condition called microcephaly and I have headache since birth and could not sleep. because when I was having that as a newborn I was crying so much because it was very painful. I have not gotten headaches like that since I was born so the varnish did something to me. Now I'm telling everyone to be careful and wear proper gloves and mask that is not doctor masks or you see from the home debut that woodworkers use. You need a better proper mask. I was wearing the mask and gloves but the ones I saw like the doctor's mask, were still not proper, it still got to Me and I also Went outside to do this. Everyone needs to be careful when using them. Wash hands a lot with soap. A lot of people don't talk about this situation and people need to.

KZfaq shorts, they're meant for mobile viewing mainly. Took me a while to warm up, but I've learned not to question the direction these platforms take.. just evolve with it. They're actually much easier for me to make and I also really enjoy the ease of sharing good information. I'll always post regular videos as well, just adding to the mix
