Varnishing an acrylic pour is a super important step! It protects the painting from moisture, dust, and UV rays, as well as bringing out the vibrancy of the paint colors that they had while they were wet.
Today I’m showing you two ways to varnish an acrylic painting, using Liquitex Basics Gloss Varnish and a SOFT foam brush.
If applying a thin coat with the brush, make sure you work quickly and don’t go back over your varnished surface after more than about a minute, or it could cause brush marks or cloudiness! If doing a large painting, brush the varnish on one or two brush-widths at a time, smooth them out, and then keep going. If doing a small painting, you can brush the whole thing before smoothing it out.
If applying a thicker coat, have a torch handy to pop the air bubbles in the varnish! Also make sure that your paintings are VERY clean, as even fingerprints can cause some “dimpling” where the varnish pulls away from the canvas.
