Wild, just finished my first painting. I researched varnishing online and my eyes are spinning. Yours is the best video on this...period. Can you please speak to retouch varnish? From what I read, the advice is to use retouch varnish after painting is dry to the touch (yeah, like I'll risk a fingerprint), then varnish 6-12mos later. I'd really love to hear what you have to say on all of this 'retouch' 'final varnish' subject. You've been right on with everything else since I've started this new hobby. Thanks!
@Wild43 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't look at retouch varnish yet since you are new I would go with a high quality spray on varnish like the one in this video. Retouch varnish is for fixing old paintings that have a chip or something. Hope this helps. So how do you keep dust from settling on a finished oil while it is drying? Not that I have dirty, dusty home, it' just that I am new to oil painting and painting in general and want to make sure my landscapes aren't ruined before I have a chance to seal them. Of course I realize I can just store them in a closed environment but was wondering if there are any specific techniques or products designed to prevent dust/dirt settlement while drying?
@Wild45 жыл бұрын
If you have a semi clean area with some space you can buy a drying rack. I have one like this ( amzn.to/2xuCMsT ) that I keep in a clean part of my garage. They have wall mounted ones too that care cool. But a cool little hack is if you have any left over boxes that are bigger than you painting. You can cut some small holes in it and cover your painting with the box. This will give it slight protection and allow air flow. I hope that helps If you need any more tips I am starting a new art channel that I will be launching next week. You can find it here: kzfaq.info/love/J0nGU-oZthfagTyVVXiVQA - feel free to sub :)

Hi! I made my first oil painting on December and now it could be the time to put the varnish on. I have Winsor & Newton's matt varnish spray. I have read that if you have a clear varnish you should put it across the painting for example from left to right and from up to down, but if you have a matt varnish you should put it only one direction. But how about matt varnish SPAY? Can I use the matt varnish spray exactly the same way you use the varnish in this video? Also in the can there is a text that "For the best results spray artwork flat". So should I do what is told in the can or should I do how you do in the video where the painting is in an upright position?
@Wild43 жыл бұрын

Can the varnish be sprayed on an existing oil/vinyl painting to revive colors?
@rabarberellum1017 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Question: why do you varnish your paintings standing up against a wall? Is there a technical reason for doing that? It seems on first glance that varnishing paintings that lay down prevents it from causing minute bleedings.
@Ra.za.g Жыл бұрын
I think it may be because it’s harder for the can to spray properly when facing down

how long should you wait before you varnish a painting
@Wild46 жыл бұрын
It depends on how much paint is on the canvas - You want to make sure it is good and dry (which can take a few months) depending on the weather - But a lot of people wait 8 to 12 month before adding a coating to their canvas. I hope that helps 💪
@angelestrada61826 жыл бұрын
So when I'm done with a painting just set it on a shelf and wait a year for it to dry. Then I can vanish and frame it . Or what do you recommend when I complete a project.
@indranilbiswas71986 жыл бұрын
U CAN APPLY DAMMAR VARNISH FOR THE TIME BEING AND AFTER 8- 12 MONTHS U CAN APPLY THIS WINSOR AND NEWTON VARNISH. WHAT HAPPENS IS WHEN U APPLY DAMMAR VARNISH THE TOP LAYER IS JUST ACTING AS A PROTECTIVE LAYER OF THE PAINTING WITHOUT SEALING THE PAINTING COMPLETELY IN THAT WAY IT IS HELPING THE BASE LAYERS OF THE COLORS TO DRY WITH A HUGE PROTECTION OF THE TOP LAYER PAINTING WHERAS WHEN U SPRAY A PICTURE VARNISH IS SEALS THE PAINTING AND ONCE IT SEALS THE PAINTING THE BAYERS LAYERS CANNOT DRY,WHICH IN FUTURE MAY CRACK DUE TO UN EVEN OXIDATION RATE OF BASE LAYER AND TOP LAYER. SO THIS IS THE MAIN REASON BEHIND TELLING NOT TO VARNISH BEFORE 8 TO 12 MONTHS. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!

Good video, Wild! :) A couple of questions...why two coats? If its for coverage, would it be a good idea to start the next coat upside down and turn the opposite direction that the first coat so that you don't repeat a pattern? :)
@Wild46 жыл бұрын
Thanks, 2 coats for me is all about preference ( I just like the High Gloss Shinny Look (makes all the colors pop to my eye)). If you spray correctly, there will be no pattern left when it drys. You totally could do your second coating with the painting upside down and then turn it 90 (no harm in making sure you got every little nook and cranny sprayed :)
