CertUtil -hashfile method failed on both command prompt and powershell. But good sources won't lie. With that said I'm really enjoying the fact that Mint is more or less just as easy or hard to manage as Windows. The perfect escape from Windows 11 and sometimes 10. I got Mint 20.3 using the 5.4 kernel allowing me the use of Nvidia proprietary drivers so I can play Minecraft Java 17 with Tea shaders in 900p 50% resolution scale while rendering between 3-4 chunks in 60fps. My NVS 2100M hasn't let me down yet.

You are not checking the image file with pgp because you don't trust the developers or the website. As it says in the written guide, it's for Authenticity and Integrity, it's to make sure you are getting the file unmodified from the original source, not corrupted or modified in any way. You don't really have to do any of this but better safe than sorry

Make sure the command prompt/PowerShell is pointing at the right directory (you can do this with the cd command)

What's the difference between integrity and authenticity here ? I'm assuming authenticity verifies trusted ISO file and integrity verifies if it has been altered or not.

Integrity is checking if the SHA256 checksum of the image file is the same as in the sha256sum txt file. Authenticity is verifying that the sha256sum you have downloaded is the real one and not modified

Not talking down on nobody but if someone would remake this video but in different languages it would be amazing (spanish in my case).... When I open the text file in Notepad to get the key, the versions aren't neatly listed as they are in the video. They are not listed at all. There is just a paragraph of letters, numbers and symbols. Anyone know why?

Troubleshooting for -hashfile command fail : The instructor has PowerShell directed to his desktop as he moved the files there. 1: move / drag all files to the desktop. 2: In Powershell type Set-location desktop then press enter 3: follow everything he did.

I downloaded Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon. When I clicked on the link to go to do the verification and authentication and got a 404 page error. Thus this was useless to me 😢

gpg : The term 'gpg' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

Try to reinstall gpg and restart your system, if it still doesn't work then go manually to the folder that contains the gpg and the rest of the executables, copy the path to the folder on windows explorer and manually add it to the path (you can find a tutorial on KZfaq on how to manually modify the path)

On my computer, the GnuPG "installer" didn't bother to install a path variable... so gpg commands were not recognized. Quickest workaround is to move your key files to where gpg lives and run the authentication from there. ... or put the full path of gpg.exe in for the command, but it will expect the .txt .gpg files to be there also unless you also include the full path for them. (There's got to be a better way to verify that an .iso is good!)

if having trouble not finding the file maybe you're in the wrong adress. Type dir and see if the ISO is there. if not you have to look where the ISO file is and go there through the powershel using command cd pastename to open paste until you reach your file. Once you're in the right place it'll work

If you run into issues, make sure the downloads did not fail. I did not make sure this was the case (I might not have had enough space), and the powershell commands failed.

i dont get this. when i right click save as the TWO files from linux mint connamon, i get TWO files. a .txt, and a .gpg....no .iso, i have been struggling with this & im lost. i have installed linux before & there was none of this verify nonsense, it was a .iso.

I almost gave up (again)--here we had Mint, which is supposed to be so easy, and then there is basically no help out there digestible to the beginner. For example, the website doesn't say to put these commands in the cmd or powershell, etc. stuff like that. It may be retarded, but I did not know that at all. Just kind of figured it out. This video saved my life, but it was very rapid and, as with many other instructional videos, I wasn't sure if I should continue because he doesn't anticipate any questions one might have--such as, "What about that ISO Verifying Tool they were talking about? I thought that was supposed to be two clicks?" I see why it's not applicable now, but it would have been nice if he'd said something about that. Sometimes you do an entire process and then find out, oops, this wasn't the one I needed. He obviously cared enough to put this out there, but wow, if this was a class, I would have been the dumb kid in the back who would figure he'll just work at McDonald's for the rest of his life. This was a giant hurdle that makes me afraid there will be hours of stuff like this in the future. At this point, I'm determined, but it's too bad there isn't something with a little more hand-holding because beginners need it.

I'm a noob but I have downloaded to desktop from several different servers. I keep getting: CertUtil -hashfile .\linuxmint-21.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso SHA256 CertUtil: -hashfile command FAILED: 0x80070002 (WIN32: 2 ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) CertUtil: The system cannot find the file specified. CertUtil seems to be the issue but I can't find why.

Well folks, as my first linux experience, this is not good. If the rest of it is as complicated as this, it bodes ill for Linux Mint. One thing - you know that dash in front of "hashfile" is impossible to see in your video.

Good tutorial but if Linux expects to have any kind of user base growth this whole mess needs to be automated. There is zero chance a normal everyday Windows or Mac user is going to jump through these hoops. This would be their first indication that the whole Linux environment is overly complex and unwelcoming and broken from a usability standpoint.
