How to view comet NEOWISE at night, and in the morning

Comet NEOWISE, which has been dazzling the early morning sky the past week, will now have likely appearances in the night sky after sunset.
Starting tonight and over the next few nights 1 hour after sunset in the northwest sky, we can see the comet very low on the horizon. The key is to get a good view of the horizon away from trees and buildings and also to let your eye adjust. You may need binoculars or a camera to really see it.

Stellarium is useful for locating the area and times to view Neowise. I live 90 miles northeast of the north edge of Dallas, and saw the comet fine last night from 9:30 pm. I had to go to a field nearby to get a horizon that was not obscured by tall trees or buildings. I had street lamps to my right and behind me, but because there was no city light in the direction of the comet the view was unimpaired. I used 8 x 42 Pentax binoculars, a particularly bright and clear model with long eye relief for use with glasses. Later I got out a tripod and 77mm spotting scope with a 20mm ocular, and that gave a good image, almost filling the eyepiece. I could not make out a split tail. Either it wasn't there, or the air/light pollution fuzzed it out. Unfortunately I do not have a working camera, or a lens attachment, or an attachment for cellphone-to-eyepiece on the scope. Therefore no photos, bummer.

I saw two last night as well. You'll start seeing a ton over the next 2 or 3 weeks, thanks to the many meteor showers going on right now. Look outside on the 29th of July and the 12th of August for the major ones in the coming weeks.

Here's something... Go to spaceweather.com and look at the simple map. Follow what would be the bottom of the Big Dipper (not the furthest south point, but the part that holds water .. the flat bottom) and use the bottom to point straight down to just barely above the Lynx Constellation. The constellation in-between the Lynx and the Big Dipper makes a "C" and NeoWise will complete the bottom crescent of the "C." For the next two nights. It was too dim to see it tonight, too much ambient light. Getting away from the city 8f you can and even into higher elevations will insure you see it, providing there are no clouds.

Meanwhile, for me the sky is clear for the entire day until it reaches 7 pm when the sun sets and there's always this huge thunderstorm cloud blocking the North West horizon. This has happened everyday for the past 5 days. Ah well, try again in 6,800 years I guess.

Tried twice now always had something blocking my view. Clouds, Trees etc. Just can't find a good open spot. Would you say that this night (14th to 15th) the comet will still be bright enough to be seen before sunrise? And to take a pic
@zenphotojourney
@zenphotojourney 3 жыл бұрын
This might be the last time it's still dark enough when the comet rises in the morning to get a picture. I'd choose a spot with a good view and be there at the right time. Clouds may come but hopefully not for too long. I don't know where you are but it's been really clear except for smoke from wildfires here.

Saw it tonight, the 16th. Too dim to see both tails but it was there. We're in central Mexico. Just have your tripod, a good time lapse setting, and take the photo in less than 30 seconds exposure, or it will blur. (Sky is constantly moving) This Evening Light Comet NeoWise is quite a show.
