I’ve been looking for a solid long tone excersize for a while, glad I came across this!

This is helpful, thank you. I like that you emphasized multiple benfits that can be achieved from the single activity, especially the ear training that is essential for Jazz and playing within a group! Do you do this typically instead of long tones? Hope you cover effectivly practicing chord progressions and regressions on a monophonic instrument in a future video!

does that mean you never change the mouthpieceposition no matter if high or low notes? some of the masters constantly change the embouchure. thanks john this exercise is revealing!

Great lesson, thanks. Joe Temperley suggests a similar exercise but he uses C# as the “hinge” tone. Maybe the theory is that’s such a wonky note so it’s always good to work on that one? Also, full range of the horn, and metronome!

I think Adam’s using the word “hinge” because he’s concentrating on “opening up” from the more resistant D to the less resistant target notes. Temperley holds the notes much longer and I think he focuses on phattening the C#. Although Temperley doesn’t talk about metering the air out in the low notes, his exercise requires you to be efficient with your air or you’ll run out. There’s also people that match every note to low Bb...

@@ronglennproductions5416 interesting, thanks! I’ve started moving the “hinge” note. I’ll use C# one day, then D the next day, then C, then Eb, then B, then back to C#. The idea is not to lock in the same note all the time, but to stay kind of in the middle of the horn. Maybe I’m over-thinking it? Good stuff man, thanks!

Yes, but wait until you do the same exercise, same hinge, but instead of whole notes this gentleman was playing, you play a chromatic passage of the same 4/4 hinge but with two half notes for each tone, then a whole passage with four quarter notes, and then a whole passage with eight eighth notes, etc. That is, if with the embouchure you also exercise precise tonguing and exact rhythm along with the metronome. Do it with slow, moderate and fast tempi and you'll become Rambo of the saxophone. :)
