At first I would just wipe my down jackets down with a soapy rag because I was kinda afraid to put mine in the washer. That worked for a while but I finally just threw them in the washer and dried them in the drier and they came out like new. I couldn't believe it. Washing them actually makes the jackets fluffier and cleaner than ever. You'd be surprised how important it is to wash your down jackets. Good upload!

I pretreated the spots with diluted dish soap. I bought the detergent you recommended along with the washer and dryer tips in this video and the jacket is back to looking like new! Although Justin recommends not to line dry down, I DO line dry my down jackets and sleeping bags. THEN I use the dryer to fluff it up. This method does less damage to the down than tumbling it in the dryer for several hours AND it still comes out really fluffy and nice.

Just my personal opinion and experience. I’ve found by trial and error that it’s best to air dry first then place on a low heat in the drying for about 5 mins. The down will be come fluffy and spread evenly by using this method. Saves energy as well.

Read the instructions included in your jacket. If the washing instructions are normal washing by hand or washing machine, dry cleaning will damage the inner film and you will lose the warranty on the product. If you are afraid of it, hand wash it with a good rinse for only ten minutes, then put it in the dryer with one tennis ball on the delicate cycle, then multiply the balls into two and so on until you get the satisfactory result

@JustinOutdoors

I'm not too knowledgeable about washer types, but I think the system for a top loader without an agitator is the same as the front loaders. So you should be okay. I had a top loader without an agitator several years ago and was fine washing down in it.
@NikwaxNorthAmerica
@NikwaxNorthAmerica 3 жыл бұрын
@@JustinOutdoors Hi, Justin and Mary - It is best to not use a top loader even if there is not an agitator because down floats, so the jacket will rise to the top of the machine and not get thoroughly cleaned. It is better to hand wash in this situation.

How about Pre-Treating with something like Dawn Dish Soap. I use my down jack while Cycling in Minnesota in the winter, and moving the bike around I have gotten a few grease stains on it from the chain. I have a Outdoor Vitals jacket which has been great for me. Any thoughts on pretreating stained areas? - Thanks

@JustinOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
I'd avoid treating it with any traditional detergent product. The same processes that remove the grease from your jacket will also strip the down of it's natural oil. You MIGHT be able to spot clean the stain by hand, but I would be careful.

My down also had an oil stain. Try to put talc powder on the old stain area. And put a lil dish soap and brush it carefully on that area.. use toothbrush. Its effective

Hey, living in Germany and we have don't have a dryer and nor does anyone we know. We have broken dryer that can't heat up in the basement. Any chance we can fluff up the items and then dry them near the radiator maybe with a fan as well?

I did it without dryer but it took 5 days. I washed it during winter 😅. You need to be very patient to oftenly shake your jacket up and down. If there are clumps then you should shred it gently with your hand.

Hey, I have mildew on my pricy down jacket and I don't know how to remove mildew as the label instructs not to use any bleach or hot, warm water and these are the things that kill mildew, is it safe to use dettol? Please help me remove mildew without damaging the down jacket
@JustinOutdoors

You could try soaking it in a vinegar solution before washing it. If that doesn't work, then I would probably resort to using hot water in the washing machine while washing it. Better than having a useless jacket.

I tryed diluted vinegar on my jacket and it worked out well, didn't leave stains, thanks for your help! I have some other questions, on the dryer there was low heat dry and delicates dry, which one is the best for down jackets? I put my jacket first on delicates dry which was very low heat so after 2.5 hours my jacket wasn't dry yet. I put it into a low heat cycle then I felt it was getting dryed faster! My other question is that my jacket retained it's loft, does this mean that the washing/drying process was successful and it will be as warm as it used to be? Cause I'm afraid that I put too much detergent that the jacket didn't get rinsed enough!

I didn't have tennis balls. I did however have some rolled up hicking socks, in a tight ball. I've had my Tripple Fat Goose for three years now. It's the first time I've washed it, because I don't have many hours of wear on it. It was an expensive parka, and at fifty-seven years old, I want it to be my last really good winter parka in my life. I've even put it in my will.

No idea, haha. The puffiness is what gives you warmth. If you don't want a puffy jacket, maybe look at synthetic insulation options.
