In this video we will show you why it’s important to care for your jacket & pants. You’ll get useful advice when and how often you should wash your garments and how to check the waterproofing / impregnation layer, also known as DWR (durable water repellent).
This simple process includes 3 steps:
Step 1: Wash
Step 2: Dry
Step 3: Reapply

Is it better to turn inside out the Gore R7 trail shakedry jacket before washing, also in a top loading machine do I have to put it in a washing bag as the material not as durable as a normal jacket?

Hello, yes, you can get the same effect with an iron. Iron your dry apparel at a very low temperature and without steam. To protect the surface, put a small towel between the iron and the garment.

Kindly go into detail on your second question as we're not sure we understand it correctly. To your first question: The temperature setting depends on the kind of iron you're using. If you're unsure, we would recommend the lowest setting available. Make sure not to use steam. Additionally, you could also contact the manufacturing brand of your garment for specific instructions.

Hi, I have very strong stain especially at the wristbands and 2 wash didn't help to remove it even if I scrubed it a little with the recommanded detergent (Grangers performance) before putting my wintercoat in the machine. Any suggestion please?

Do you have to put your jacket back in for a second cycle to activate the DWR treatment, or is one tumble dry enough to both dry and reactive ?

Any special tips for those with a top loading High Efficiency washer that uses like half a liter of water to do a load of laundry and rubs everything on the agitator on the bottom of the machine?

Don't take the chance. They can 'eat' clothes. I often use extra water to prevent damage to my clothes.

Never use such machines - wash by hand only. Machines will stress the seams or sometimes break them.

My gore tex jacket caught some really bad food odors (from grilled and smoke). I washed the jacket as instructed but the smell is still there especially in the hood. Any recommendations to effectively get rid of the smell?

How would care differ for a Gore-Tex parka with down filling? The care label pretty much just says spot clean but i'm worried about when the DWR wears off then how would i be able to reactivate it if it says not to put it in the dryer?

Your GORE-TEX garment requires heat in order to reactivate its DWR treatment. Therefore, spin-drying would not do the trick. I washed my Patagonia gore tex first time as instructed in this video with dryer but my jacket still wet out ( run water in the shower) and it doesn’t feel heavy like the way it should feel. Any suggestion?

Gore tex i am trying to decide wether or not to get a white gore tex supreme parka or black one. I want a white one because i think it looks better but white jackets usually get dirty and then you will have to clean them more often. Do you guys think this would be the case with the white parka because i am considering the black one just so i dont have to worry so much about it getting dirty

This is very much a personal preference. Like you already said, white garments usually appear to become dirty more quickly but then you can always follow this care guide to make it look fresh again. 😄

Can you reactivate the dwr with a hair dryer on warm/hot?

We would recommend washing the garment once more without detergent (only water). Should that not solve the issue, we would advise you to get in touch with the manufacturer of the detergent and/or your garment for further care instructions in this case.

We always recommend following the manufacturer's instructions. If you don't have a wash net, please double check with Supreme if it is obligatory or if there is another way. Sometimes, you can use a pillow case instead of a wash net, but please check with Supreme beforehand.

If you wish to use a specific product that also renews the garment's DWR treatment, we cannot recommend any specific product due to the large number of high-quality products available. New Volcom gore-tex jacket here. I use my jacket to climb a mountain (3h) and get down on snowboard. First time It was ok, but today, because it was -1c I was sweating a lot. So much that when I got on top, my jacket was soaked. So, I’l check the DWR when its dry, and because I’m doing that much effort, can washing the jacket every two run harm the fabric ? Thank you.

Proper wash and care of your jacket do not harm the GORE-TEX membrane. The jacket is treated with a durable water-repellent so that water beads up and rolls off the fabric from the outside. If your jacket was soaked because of perspiration from the inside it would most likely not be related to the DWR treatment. I have a Gore-Tex jacket by Berghaus. The only problem I have with it is that when caught in heavy rain it wets out (but doesn't let in water). I think rain should just bead off a good jacket. I think Nikwax wash-in doesn't work as at the end of every wash cycle there's a rinse. All this does is just wash out the newly applied Nikwax.

In step 2, if you already dried your jacket in the dryer, why do you have to put it back for another 20 minutes to reactivate the DWR?

You can handwash your garments as well as in a toploading washer. Simply make sure that you don't surpass the temperature indicated on the sewn-in label. 👍

Using a top loading washer with an agitator risks stretching the garment and stressing the seams. Wash by hand is the best bet, or if absolutely necessary, use a front loading machine and run on low spin ( to not stretch the material) and either air dry or low heat tumble dry if garment instructions permit.

Some jackets the North face (Gore-tex) in their instructions say that I have to wash with warm or cold water. They already have me confused. and others say that it does not have to be ironed

The first rule is: The care instructions on the sewn-in tag are always right. 😁 In regards to your comments, washing in warm or cold water is ok and does not harm your GORE-TEX garment. Can you really use regular detergent? Everything I've read everywhere says specifically NOT to use regular detergent but Nikwax instead. Just curious cause we're about to wash some expensive jackets. Thanks!

We always recommend checking the sewn-in tag for care instructions first as a laundry bag might be necessary for certain items of clothing. Otherwise, although not generally necessary for GORE-TEX products, it is advisable to use a laundry bag, especially if you're washing your jacket together with other items in the washing machine.

Does DWR needs to be reactivated every wash (thumble dry or ironing)? When the jacket wets out due to warn DWR is the breathability performance affected?

The DWR only has to be reapplied if water doesn’t bead and run off after washing. Normally, this does not happen after every wash. If you don't reapply the DWR, your GORE-TEX garments may be heavier when they get wet and they might take longer to dry. The breathability should not be affected, but you might feel less comfortable if your jacket is wet from the outside.

am confused. It's claimed its so fine that water can not soak in, yet, it needs repellent sprayed on?

The GORE-TEX membrane inside the garment is 100% waterproof. No water can pass through. This membrane is bonded to an outer fabric, which is treated with a water-repellent product so that it does not become saturated. If it does soak up water the garment would remain waterproof, however, it might give the wearer an uncomfortable and cold feeling while wearing it.

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: You'll need to differentiate between the water-repellency of the outer fabric of your jacket and its waterproofness provided by the GORE-TEX membrane inside your jacket. The DWR (durable water repellency) treatment on the outer fabric can be reactivated through heat, i.e. putting your jacket in the dryer or ironing it (with a towel in between the jacket and the iron). @@sebastianfogh2381 We might have misunderstood your initial question. What kind of spin cycles your washing machine has depends on the individual machine. GORE-TEX garments should be washed on one of the lower settings. On most of the newer machines nowadays you don't need to choose this yourself anymore but they offer predetermined settings for different kinds of clothing.

Quite the contrary. Powder detergent might clog the GORE-TEX membrane and, therefore, hinder its breathability. Liquid detergent dissolves more easily, which is why we recommend it to care for your GORE-TEX garments.

I have a genuine question not meant to be sarcastic at all but if GORE-TEX is a waterproof fabric why does it rely on DWR coating to keep it's water proof properties? I'm still learning about waterproof outerwear and how they work.

The GORE-TEX membrane itself is 100% waterproof. When it is used in garments, it is bonded to a face fabric, which needs to be treated with a durable water repellent in order for water to bead up and roll of the garment on the outside.

@@GORETEXBrand I hear that there is a material called GORE-TEX shake dry which is essentially a garment that has the waterproof GORE-TEX material on the outside so it doesn't need a DWR treatment. Why not have all your jackets like that?

@@MissYukiri That's right. The SHAKEDRY™ material is not durable enough for activities such as mountaineering or other activities where heavier backpacks are usually worn for example. @@GORETEXBrand This is VERY important information most people does not know. Water will not get through inside GTX layer but upper layer of fabric would soak up water and will be heavy, cold etc... And of course would NOT breathe as it should be!

You are best washing all such garments by hand with tepid water using pure liquid soap. Putting them in a machine stresses the seams and other parts of the clothing. Then rinse and apply Nikwax or similar product, then rinse in cold water till the water runs clear. Then air dry. This works all the time with my garments.

An agitator less washing machine (as shown in this video) will apply less force to the seams than just wearing the clothing, while cleaning and rinsing better than hand washing.

Dwr coating does not work in the long run. It does not make sense that the membrane is dependent on dwr to work optimally. Looking forward to you inventing something better. Goretex is not worth the money. That's just my opinion...

I use only mild liquid soap, and wash by hand. Machines stress or damage the seams. I rinse the garment, then apply Nikwax, rinsing again in cold water until the water runs clear and then air dry. Nikwax generally does not require heat to be applied to activate. I have always used this procedure even on jackets 16 years old, and they are as good as new!
