When I was a kid and starting out my mom ironed my gi and my sensei realized he needed to instruct the beginners how to properly wash and maintain a gi. He did a bunch of classes on proper gi maintenance for anyone who needed to learn and from that day kept teaching the beginners how to wash and maintain the gi.

I remember my first thick/heavy weight gi. It felt like a boat sail when wet. And yes I made the ironing mistake.......took almost a month of washes for the singe marks to come out. Air dry and after a good warm up it looks great. I am not obsessed with looks but as an instructor we always need to give a professional image.

I just got my Seishin Gi here in New Mexico last week. This Gi fits so well and it so comfortable that it has further enhanced my enjoyment of Karate. I am 6'1" 275 lbs. (124 Kilos) weightlifter who has big arms, legs, shoulders and a bit of a belly and the Seishin Male 185 cm / 6 ft 1 in size fits me perfectly. I will follow these instructions for the Gi's care, thanks!

Love the drying cabinet - I've never seen one before. I have a couple of very cheap "toothpick" bo that developed cracks (they'd only been struck a few times each, and not very hard either). The bo now have a new life as drying racks - I hang them with twine from ceiling hooks. I thread one bo through the sleeves of my gi jacket. The other bo is for pants, my obi, and, *ahem* things I wear under my dogi. For the pants I use two pants hangers (one front, one back) to hold it open to allow air flow. Love your "Crazy Monkey" technique - I'll try that.

So he is right about the bleach and the hang to dry, air dry is best. But as a fibre artist with a textile degree I must disagree about the heat. Cotton is one if the fibers that can take a hot wash and handle being ironed. I only iron for tournaments though. I wash in hot with any detergent and borax for a whitener and odour removal. oxy stain removers work well on most organic stains like sweat and blood. Dish soap or bar laundry soaps help with stubborn make-up stains. If you choose to iron use a hot setting and steam or spray the garment with water. Keep moving! Iron it, don't press it. Lastly I like to starch my gi before tournaments. if you do this, iron it before you starch it then reduce the heat so you don't scorch the starch. It will leave your gi wrinkle free and smelling great for an extended time and also make it look whiter. If it isn't stained or smelling bad don't wash it unnecessarily. it will only wear it out faster! I'm not very sweaty but I only wash mine every few weeks. Others may have to wash more often but unneeded washing is harder on the fiber than heat is. Happy washing!

It can actually be a problem sometimes. Last night I did 20 min of High Intensity in the hot gym and I was just damp, it was hard to stay cool. I know other people who aren't very sweaty either and also people like my husband who pour sweat just thinking about exercise. Everyone is different!

Thanks for the video, we've had to get new gis recently as our old ones were looking dingy. I now only use clear liquid detergents - no bluing/whitening agents - as those are what makes the gi turn grey. I do a small amount of bleach as we're in a humid climate and bacteria grows in the machine making the clothes stink. We've also stopped using regular deodorants when training and only use aluminium free deodorants; that stops yellow armpit stains from forming...that's our hope anyway.
@JoelleWhiteKarateMama Жыл бұрын
Pssst - don't tell anyone... I don't use deodorant. My jackets get yellow armpit stains anyway. I've found spraying problem areas with white vinegar before washing helps - it'll take a couple of months to eliminate a light stain, but vinegar does that too. I also hang my jacket in a window (but take the jacket down as soon as it is dry).
@danielharris31807 ай бұрын
@@JoelleWhiteKarateMama Does vinegar actually work? I read it just helps eliminate odor. My Gi is very off-white and yellow and its only been 8 months. Its just a cheap Blitz 65% polyester 7oz.
@JoelleWhiteKarateMama7 ай бұрын
@@danielharris3180 Not sure how to get the whole gi white, I just spray problem spots. If you do this from the start the gi will be OK. If it's already yellow in the problem spots it takes time and repetition (something you're already familiar with). When you can, let the vinegar soak awhile. Also, I thread a cheap bo through the sleeves to hang it to dry in sunlight. I learned a long time ago with cloth baby diapers that sunshine can whiten cotton. Hope this helps!
