It's important to note, when raising egg laying chickens to use straw, instead of hay in their laying quarters as hay creates fungus/mold which could compromise the eggs. Also important to change the bedding straw frequently to minimize feces sticking to the shell. If an egg has feces stuck to the shell, wash the egg in lukewarm water and refrigerate it. Don't use those eggs for glassing, as the bloom will have been removed. Only use freshly laid eggs that look clean, with the bloom in tact. Thank you for sharing your information. Great tip on boiling the water, and letting it cool first. :)

Prior to water glassing, you do not wash the egg at all. You only use perfectly clean eggs. After removing the egg from the solution when it is time to use the egg, you can use warm water to remove the lyme. It must then be used right away. Hope this helps!

Thank you. I have my lime already and will wait until May as you suggested to start this project. We are getting way more eggs than we need, and I love that there is a way to preserve eggs sans electricity.

I recently came across your channel and I'm glad I did. Practical, helpful tips! Do you know if you can feed the eggshells back to the chickens as a calcium supplement after they've been waterglassed?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 2 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you found my channel! Technically, you are washing most of the lime off of the shell before using it. Also, lime is often used in chicken coops and around chickens and is not known to cause any problems unless they were to breathe the fine dust. So yes, I would think it would be fine. With that said, it may be worth asking a veterinarian before feeding a large number of these shells to your chickens in case the buildup of lime in their system can cause problems I'm unaware of.

Hello! I just found this video! Very interesting. Thank you for sharing all this information. I’m excited to try this method this year. May I ask what kind of scale you have…. I am in need of a new one. I like how yours has a protective cover on the front.

The FDA does not recommend water glassing as a safe method for storing eggs. Calcium Hydroxide (slacked lime) is known to contain botulism in the powdered lime itself. Hydrated lime does not protect against botulism in long-term storage without acid and heat to kill it.

Once you open the container to get an egg out do you have to use all the eggs because the seal is broken? Or just close back up and remaining eggs will stay good ?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse Жыл бұрын
No, you don't. The only reason you even add a lid is so that the water doesn't evaporate.

Well instead on using gloves, can you use a big metal spoon to scoop out the egg or is it ok to use metal, should we use plastic?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse

If you can't clean the eggs, how do you get them clean? Can you run them under water?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 2 жыл бұрын
They need to come from the coop completely clean. No, you can’t wash them first because that would remove the protective bloom.

Can you measure the lime or does it have to be weighed?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it really needs to be weighed to make sure you have the right proportions. The lightweight powder doesn't measure consistently otherwise.

What are the reasons to not use the dirty eggs?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 2 жыл бұрын
The bloom on an egg keeps most things and bacteria out, but not all, especially as the egg sits in a liquid solution. If you have the eggs sitting in a highly contaminated solution it increases the chances that the egg’s bacteria load will become very high and cause it to go bad prematurely.
