I just purchased both the Kindle and the paperback edition. The YT series is so amazing that you can't go wrong buying the book. My mom, daughter and I thoroughly enjoy listening to you. We just put in a 50' x 60' garden that is not completely planted yet. While planting, my daughter and I would say now what did Gary say about this. My mom suffers from dementia and your show is the go to source for her. You bring her such comfort with your soothing voice and seeing and hearing about the plants when she is having a not great day.

Thanks Gary for the tip! Gardeners on YT don't really get into detail about how to water your plants specifically tomatoes. People say "one inch per week" and I'm thinking "What does one inch per week look like?!" Anyway, I bought a moisture meter just to be sure and I don't trust my finger to test the soil moisture.

Wow, the water hose and bucket tip is amazing. I was just thinking to myself (as he was telling how many inches of water needed) all these videos say how many inches. But none tell us a good way to measure it? For months I've been trying to figure out a way that I could prove to myself without a doubt, that I was giving them enough water. Wow, so simple yet so BRILLIANT. I'll be using this method on All my plants in my garden. THANK YOU SO MUCH 🤣

Last year i got really tired of watering so i bought a few extra buckets and put 2 holes at angles on bottom of each bucket. Than filled buckets with hose and have them sitting where holes are pointing at plant bases. Fill buckets around garden and go do other things. So only takes about 10 minutes to water whole garden now. I love this method and worked really great last year.

Thanks Gary, good tips. I never had problems with my tomato plants till last year(top end leaf curl on all new growth)....have it again this year...very distressing. I have also watched your leaf curl video. I'm in Utah and it's very hot here already(95-100 degrees).....never rains. I have put up shade cloth to protect then from the scorching sun. I am battling the proper amount of water(sometimes I think I am over watering, than a week later I think I am underwatering)..... I also know I have to step up my mulching game. So, here's the funny thing... there is another supremely excellent KZfaq gardener, also in Maryland. I just watched a video of his where he says he doesn't water his tomatoes AT ALL (except in one case and I think it was when they were transplanted). To accomplish this, he mulches like 8 inches of grass clippings. It's the fun and funny thing about gardening. Gary says very thin layer of grass mulch, and waters a lot. Other guy (whose name escapes me) piles the grass on and never waters. Both your crops look excellent. Better than mine, haha.

Hi Mr. Pilarchik! I live in Northern VA where temps were recently in the mid 90s a few days of the week and mostly 80-mid 80s the rest of the time. My tomatoes are currently at the second stage (not the really small ones, but the 1.5-2ft ones you showed) and each plant is in a 20 gallon grow bag filled 2/3 full and mulched. Would you recommend the 2 times a week of the 2 inch waterings even with cloth grow bags? Thanks!

Gary, I have my tomatoes in the 15gal root pouches with shredded hardwood mulch on top. My question is how would I know when to water? I’m in Charlotte area and every time I put my finger into the soil it’s dark and feels moist, not wet. Should I wait until it feels dryer or just go based off of watering 2” 1-3 times a week? It was easier to tell if I should water when I didn’t have the mulch on top. Now it seems like the soil is always moist. Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to the pruning stuff. Also got the kindle version of your book. Can’t wait to finish reading it.

Well soil dries from the top down. So that is good. But I would go with a schedule you set. The root pouches drain well and containers are different than the earth beds. You can't really over water them. 3x a week in your heat is a good start. You will find it will have to be more often and peak plant size and summer heat.Thanks for book support. Gary- thank you for this informative video! I have the same question. My veg raised beds have irrigation with the lines installed about 1 inch deep below the surface of the soil. Then I have an inch of mulch on top of that. How much should I supplement that if it runs every other day? Thank you!

A deep watering isn't going to hurt but you would need to do it infrequently. However the drip lines will get the water there, assuming you have a good balance. Curling is just a response to Nature... so you can do much and the plant works it out usually. Ripening is also Nature and you can't do much. I have an irrigation system. I have drip lines going to my tomatoes but have been considering a drip line mini sprinkler (sprayer) on one of the drip lines to get the whole area wet as well. But I have read in some areas that you should try not to water the leaves of the plants, therefore the sprinkler is not a good idea??

Hi Gary: Mike from Bowie again. I really have ignored the fact that I have been low on Manganese for the last twenty years and it's gotten worse. I was wondering if you have ever used Manganese Sulfate to control this issue. I have used 5 lbs. of Epsom Salts every year (800 sq f.) because of low Magnesium and below optimal sulfur so I plan on ordering Manganese sulfate and foliar feeding low amounts this summer. I will incorporate it into the soil next year with the other stuff I use. I have a rather high organic matter level 13.5% main garden, 8.5%auxiliary smaller garden I may skip the compost in the main garden and use just a thin layer of Bloom on that one next year. By the way the video was great the best way to spend under 6 minutes ever. Have you ever recommended pruning lower branches on tomato plants to prevent the spread of soil born diseases even though you use mulch. I noticed some of your plants are almost tall enough. Thanks again Mike

Great video. I have been doing veggie gardens on and off since my grandfather taught me in the early 70's. The last couple of years I have been looking at what I pay for water VS. yield. I truly enjoy gardening, however with the current inflation situation, It is not in the budget for the extra 40 to 50 bucks a month to do it. I have looked at rain collection , however for me to invest in it , when I happily give away most of my yield, It makes me sad . I have a couple of Aerogardens that cost almost nothing that work fine, however ....It ain't gardening.

Can I mulch with leaves? I use them in my compost but didn’t know if it would bring any kind of disease to mulch with them. I have lots of them because we have average but have to buy regular mulch. Trying to be economical but I won’t at the price of my veggies.

They are a great mulch. You really can't bring in disease. Its just in the surrounding environment. It shows up. Hello Gary,thanks for this video quite helpful about watering..but I live in Vegas and temperature is about 85-95 Fahrenheit, should I still water 2-3 times a week or daily??

Well you would have to up the frequency as the plants get larger and heat goes up. You might not have to do the deep watering daily but the shallow roots for sure. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN that’s exactly what I’m talking about! Other you tube gardeners just say “ water to meet your heat and water expectations” and go on you establish a way to measure out exactly the amount needed in an easy way. I have never seen that done before and it is going to change the way I’m able to stress water my plants in the late season to ripen fruit. It’s hard to tell how much I watered well not anymore thanks again!

So I have new plants that I have on a drip system. I have been watering daily, so that's way too much? Thanks
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

If they are on a drip system it depends on how much goes in and all that. So its hard for me to say. Full sun days and temps make a difference. This may sound crazy but what do you mean by consistency ? Every Monday (little)? Every Mon and Thurs for Medium? Mon Wed and Fri for large? I watched your seed starting and you explained when the dirt on top dries out and you showed the difference. That I totally understood and I did it and I have great starts. It is really dry here. I live in Western Colorado. Is there another way to tell when they need water or stick to a routine on certain days. Thank you :)
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 3 жыл бұрын
Seed starts are easier. Consistency is a schedule you set based on plant size, heat of summer and all that. Not a huge soaking Monday.... nothing for a 5 days and then soak them. That can often cause tomato cracking. Like you said 1x a week when little, 2x when heat rolls in and they are larger, 3x when things are hopping. About covering the soil to help retain moisture: I've heard pros and cons about grass and straw. What about weed fabric? Water passes through, but maybe some undesirable weed seeds or insects don't. Thanks for this. Nice to see the Lemon Boy again. Have a great day!

Not really. Its kind of an overblown concern. I don't like the fabric its a plastic mess. You can put down burlap though. i just run soaker hoses down my rows and depending on the weather will water them once or twice a week. right not it has been around 100 degrees for several days so i have t o water more often. i have my hoses on a timer and will run them for between 30 minutes to an hour. i have way too many plants to water each individually. i do that early in the season when they are just starting out and i use rain water but when summer gets here watering each one separately is not doable.
