I’ve got a Walmart special for a backpacking tent. If you have a telescope large enough to read the small print, it actually tells you to do this very thing....and in the method that you describe in this video. Let the haters hate and the unteachable stay ignorant. You can’t fix stupid, but there are plenty of folks who will absolutely benefit from your knowledge. Good job kiddo.
@BrianM78

That is hilarious. Some would say that it is stupid to buy such a cheap and rubbish tent like you did. Buy a modern well made polyester type tent (that is what we are talking here) and it should not need any treatment for a few years. If a TENT leaks when new then it has manufacturing faults......... or is from Walmart and not a tent, just a non-waterproof piece of tent shaped material held up with tent poles. You can't fix stupid. Edit: expensive tents made from different materials often need 'weathered' when brand new to seal themselves but are not of thie category in this video.

Excellent advise. No matter how much the tent manufacturer brags about waterproofing their tents we have to remember they punch holes in the fabric in the process of making the durned things. So, waterproofing even a new, "waterproof" tent is still a good idea. I have had good luck with something called "Dry Guy". You can brush it on or use a pump up sprayer. It comes in a concentrated bottle.

Great advice, the only thing I’d recommend is depending on what conditions you might face it help to hit the inside of the seams and even zippers as water can seep through them.

I used the same stuff to waterproof my 25+ year old tents! It's great stuff! I sprayed it all over inside and outside, just to make sure! I concentrated it on the seams. Before I did all this I took an extra step and disassembled my tent of all hardware and machine washed! It looks like new and no leaks!

Jordan Sharpe yes. You spray it on and you can see where you sprayed because it's wet. -not to be obvious but seeing it reassures you have have coverage imo. Dries to invisible and not sticky, don't even know it's there.

I have a Ozark dome tent that is over 7 years old and it has been thru some serious wind and rain. When I buy a tent I use the water proof spray to treat the outside including the window flaps. I then use the seam sealer to seal all seams. I had one tiny leak in one rainstorm. I also treated my two new instant tents. I have not had but one very tiny drip in one of those. I also do the floor of tent.

LOL...I was doing this very thing a few weeks ago, trying to coat my haversack, make it a bit water repellent. So, I sprayed that thing until it was dripping. About 20 minutes later, I got dizzy, wobbly. APPARENTLY, I wasn’t supposed to be using that stuff indoors at all, let alone in a tiny motel room. I’m thinking it may be wise for me to start reading labels...lol It works darn well, though! 👍

Hi Bre...I recently set up my tent in my backyard during a light rain and found it wet as well as a floor mat I put inside, I know the rain fly did its job, it soaked in thru the edges thats why Im watching your video. My question is, " does it help if you spray the inside seams?" Also?.....I live just south of the border from S.D. so rain is moderate. No downpours. Yet.

Hi Bre I bought a North Face assault 2 yellow two man tent back in 2012 I haven’t used it yet but there are a lot of reviews now about it not being waterproof at all it’s made for extremely windy weather I was wondering if I spray it with a waterproof spray will that fix the problem before I use it.? I think I paid nearly $500.00 Australian dollars for it back then I’m just wondering will the spray damage the performance of the wind resistance? Cheers Matt

You don't need to waterproof a tent. Spraying that on a factory water sealed tent will just bead off and not really soak the fabric. Even if you soak the fabric you make the tent not breathable and you will get horrible condensation. Also that brand of spray is garbage compared to NikWax. Better yet just seam seal the tent and fly and you will be better off.
@driver3899
@driver3899 6 жыл бұрын
Disagree with you on this, old tents sometimes need to be waterproofed again. If a tent is going to bead off the spray then I doubt it needs to be waterproofed as its already fine. The main thing I disagree with though is that that the fly (outer layer of tent) is ment to be breathable, its just not. Thats why the tent is two seperate layers. A single skin tent needs to be breathable yes, but not a double walled one. The water vapor from your body ect goes out through the inner layer and then condenses on the inside of the second wall where it drips down onto the open ground. Light weight high end tent flys (the outer layer) are often made of siliconised nylon anyway, a silicon spray isnt going to do it any harm, just add a little extra weight.
@unclemikeb
@unclemikeb 6 жыл бұрын
The problem I have found even with new tents is the seams. The silicone she used might seal the fabric tight but the screen area of the tent will still breathe and carry out moisture. I have heard good things about Nikwax, I will have to try it on a tent I just bought from ebay.

I'm sorry Bre, wrong. Your applying the spray WAY to close. The way to do this is light coats. 2 or 3 LIGHT coats. 1 hour in between coats at least( @ 72 F / 20 C). You do the seams by 5 or 6 light coats.
