How to Wear a 1920’s Cloche with Long Hair

Apologizes for the long absence! If you follow my Instagram you may already know this, but I injured my hand a while back and it’s taking ages to heal. It’s finally starting to mend enough that I was able to use my computer mouse to edit a quick video. I missed making videos so much!
Today’s tutorial is a brief overview about a few different ways to wear 1920’s style cloches when you have long hair. A lot of long hairstyles from that decade (especially from the earlier half of the 1920s) don’t mix well with cloches, so I thought it might be helpful to share a couple that do. Cloches were by no means the only hat women wore in that decade, despite the flapper stereotype, and were much more prominent in the latter half of the 1920s. Special cloches for girls with long hair were available, but so were other hat styles that may have better accommodated longer hair. There are also other styles one can wear with a cloche so let me know if you want a part 2! Maybe next time my hair won’t be so incredibly frizzy ;)
Both my hats in this video are modern wool-felt hats with a 1920’s style, rather than true antiques. It’s a more practical (and much less fragile) option for everyday wear. Actually, I don’t have a single 1920’s hat in my collection yet. I have a Victorian hat, a possibly late-Edwardian hat, and many hats from the 1930’s through the 1960’s, but no 1920’s ones… I may need to remedy that if I ever come across one in an antique store.

Haha this would've helped me! In high school for Halloween, I tried to do a creepy doll/vamp/flapper-inspired costume, but had no idea what to do with my hair. So I just ended up with a low side pony over my shoulder for the whole day. Not true to the '20s trend but still looked super cute with the cloche 😂

Yeah! I'm costuming for a film that takes place in the late 1920s and have been making cloche hats--some of the actors have long hair and I didn't want them to have to cut it off!

I'm so grateful for this video! It's so strange because I've been wondering just that over the past few days, how can I pull off a cloche hat with my long and continuously fast-growing hair 😂 I've been watching a lot of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries lately and have been sooo tempted to take the chop but I've waited so long to grow my hair out to this length again (it doesn't help that I've been looking at photos from a few years ago when I had the bob 😅) Now I just have to get my hands on a nice inexpensive cloche...

I actually love Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries for all the long hair inspiration! Both Dot and Dr Mac have lovely, long 1920's styles. I particularly like Dot's simple faux bob.

Do you have a tutorial for making a hat like this? Or what store did you buy it from if you bought it? I am curious to sew this kind of hat.

Both the hats I used for this video are about 10 years old, so obviously no longer available in stores (I think one was from Aldo and the other was from The Bay). Cloches are one of the more difficult hats to sew. The construction on this kind of hat would require you to either wet-felt around a hat-block or buy a felt cloche base (Etsy has some great millinery suppliers) which you could then finish the edges of + add trimming. However, I have made similar cloches from 1920's patterns, which tend to have flatter crowns and straighter sides. I don't have any tutorials posted at the moment but it's on the list of videos to make in the future :)

Where do you find or buy cloche hats that work with long hair?
@TheLongHairedFlapper

Both my cloches were just bought a chain stores. Late fall / early winter is usually the best time of year to find them. I never buy a hat without trying it on first, and the best way to make sure it's large enough to fit you hair is to simply try it on. If you want one that's larger than normal to accommodate an up-do fitting underneath, slightly more expensive hats often have a size (s/m/l or band measurement) so you can purchase one that's larger than your normal head-size. Hope that helps!

I'm probably not the best one to give outfit suggestions, as I usually just wear mine with 1920's style dresses.
