Thanks SO much! This works great for our exterior door, as we live in Western Oregon. I feel better about doing this myself, and knowing that I did it right. It seems simple now, but there are remnants of old weatherstripping (kind of covered with paint) in three different places on the doorway, NONE as described here ! OK, I admit it -- the most recent is mine. :)

That's exactly right- most people completely misunderstand what's inside and what's outside in a home (builders included). The key thing would be to get a complete analysis of your building enclosure and know that this attic needs an exterior insulated door.

I really enjoyed this; quick and to the point. Great visuals. I'm in a big city & often get awakened as I can't block out street noise into my apartment with my flimsy hollow core bedroom door. Many thanks. Any other ideas I should consider?................................................................................................... PS- There's also a roaring commercial exhaust fan on the my roof (I'm on the top floor, so this is right over my head, & also I've got a bedroom window, now stuffed with foam pillows, which is actually somewhat useful; of course, it's November now... come the summer though, & I'll need to open the window to get some air, so the pillows may only be a temporary fix ). Any ideas there? My fear is that, other than the window, that noise is probably coming through my walls as well. I can't see hanging curtains on the wall, as the room is pretty small to begin with & I don't want to make it any smaller; still, I'm hungry for ideas that don't demand any great DIY skills or cash. Last question: any ideas for soundproofing my bedroom ceiling, which is what separates me from that roaring exhaust fan? Anyway, thanks again.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I think your easiest and most effective DIY fix is to move out. Some problems are designed into a building.
@TaichiStraightlife
@TaichiStraightlife 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but I can't do that. I own the apartment. There used to be a French restaurant on the ground floor, and peace. Then a noisy sports bar moved in and all hell broke loose; they fired up the exhaust fan that had never been turned on, and when its motor died they put in a louder one, and the value of my investment (and what peace of mind I had) plummeted. The efficacy of the pillows in the window have given me some hope, & your video has also made me a little more hopeful, that I can "take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing, end them". In any case, taking some DIY action beat a seemingly bottomless depression, is my hope. My fear is that if I'm totally unsuccessful, if I end up just writhing uselessly like a fly trapped in a spider's web, what effect that would have on me.

Just so amateurs know, exterior doors are different. You need weather-stripping that has a spline that tucks into a groove on the door. These guys are doing an interior door. Obviously. But this comment is to help amateurs avoid a second trip to the store or do it wrong.

You didn't address the issue of the paper covering the adhesive side; it APPEARED as if that sticky side made no contact with the lip of the door. If that's true, what makes the foam adhere to the door stop, since it's been applied with the sticky side out?? And since it's sticky side out, might the door itself adhere to the foam, making opening or closing the door more of a chore?

Is there reason not use wider strip on the hinge side ( not thicker, just wider ) How long does this type of seal last for doors that face indoors ( inside house on both sides )? How long last for doors that face outside on one side & inside house on other side? Thanks for sharing, appreciate it... The weather striping currently on house has been there from the beginning & has been there for probably 10 to 20 yrs & has provided good seal & adhesive still good... I wish I could find weather stripping originally installed... It was thicker than what hardware stores have now & it was rubbery / like half side of small racing bicycle inner tube cut... So there's small dome facing door...

great video. The issue I am running into is how to figure out the right thickness to buy for a door. There are so many doors and thicknesses and types of door seals and I have tried sealing my front door a couple times and either the sealer is too thick and there is way too much resistance or there is not enough resistance and the door is still loose. For an air tight fit the stops, and frame on hinge side, must be carefully measured and strip cut accordingly, not rolled out like this, as the potential for a bad fit is obvious.

Hello. I have a question. I am currently moving into an apartment room (shared with 2 other roommates). My biggest concern is others being able to hear me talk at night (when I record videos or stream). Somebody recommended me to try placing Weatherstrips around the wooden door. I found this video on how to install them on an indoor and the information you presented is very understandable + correct. Will adding weatherstrips around my room door reduce (possibly block out entirely) the volume of my voice when I close the door?

99% certainty this will NOT do what you want.

Thank-you for the reply! It's sad how there aren't too many good choices out here for reducing noise without removing drywall (landlord won't approve of drywall renovation).

If the weatherstrips are a bit narrower than the actual door stop- would you put it in to touch the corner where it meets the door jamb or would you put it to touch the other edge of the door stop?

Best way is to give it a try- weatherstripping is cheap and fast, you can always try again
