How to Wet Block a Crochet or Knit Project

In this video you'll learn how and why to wet block a crochet or knit project. Blocking helps to relax the fiber and maintain the ideal shape of a piece, be it a shawl, scarf, blanket, or sweater. Wet blocking is great for projects made with animal fibers like wool or alpaca and I prefer steam blocking projects with synthetic fibers like acrylic or polyester. Just wanted to point out since you said it was difficult to do the triangle or the angled part since there aren't any lines, since they are squares you can actually just follow from corner to corner of each of the little marked squares and that will be a straight diagonal line if you were wanting it to 45 degrees or squared if that makes sense.

I appreciate your blocking tutorials. I have been learning mostly by reading. I am not sure my grandmother blocked anything, besides her dainty doilies, snowflakes, etc....

When u stretch the project, does it make it looser?? Atm I'm making a hat but its quite a tight fit and I'd rather it be a bit more loose. Will blocking it help??

Very interesting. I never knew what people were talking about when they said they blocked their projects, now I know. Now a question, I know you said you blocked most everything you do right? Is it necessary or just a preference? Also probably best with wool items for sure. I am fairly new at crocheting and just making blankets right now, with arcrylic. should I be doing this with these little blankets?

Good question! It's not necessary to block any project, really it helps to maintain the shape and make the project more drape-y. Wet blocking like this is really best for wool based or other animal fiber based projects. I usually like to steam block blankets (especially ones made with acrylic or polyester yarn) - video on that coming after the new year!

My mom crocheted me a blanket year's ago and I washed it once before and didn't dry it. I washed it and dried it recently and it stretched all of the yarn. My mom is no longer with me. Is there any way to shrink it back? Maybe washing in hot water and no drying? Thank you for any help
