James, not sure what you're seeing, but this is a 2002 C5 Z06, NOT a C4. The C5 hydroformed rails are welded in several spots where they connect to the front and rear tie bars, as well as the rear bulkhead behind the seats. I am pretty familiar with the differences between the two since I have been dismantling them for over 25 years. Thanks for watching👍.

GM did not invent hydroforming, and they weren't the first to use it in a vehicle (Chrysler was), although they were the first to use it for a major structural component. Hydroforming uses water pressure (7000 psi) in a form to force one piece of tubing into the correct shape. This results in a stronger frame component with no welds. Obviously, pieces are welded together to form the car, but hydroforming allows them to make long and complex pieces without welds.

Thanks for the information, I was under the impression it was a GM technology that they had developed. I see now Chrysler used it for a dash structural support in the minivans, but not sure that counts😁.

Great videos, thanks for taking the time to share this info with us. I'm trying pick the right donor vette for a studebaker build. If I understand correctly, I need to stay pre 84, or post 96 if I want a full frame. Do you have a recommendation?
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it👍. I would recommend staying with the 82 back frame, as the C5's are still a unibody construction and fairly troublesome to adapt to a body on frame car like the Studebaker.

@VetteSource
@VetteSource 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it👍. The C4 chassis is pretty much the same unitized design as a C5, with the exception of it being welded together in a few more sections than the C5. Most of the time when you see a custom build with a C4 or C5 chassis, what they really mean is that they used the suspension and small part of the chassis to mate to the car that that is being used for the build. Placing the body of another car over the top of the complete C4/C5 chassis, while not impossible, requires an large amount of work and custom engineering.

@VetteSource
@VetteSource 5 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for the feedback. The C7 frames are quite a different animal. Instead of being a one piece rail, they are made of multiple subsections that are welded together. In some repair situations replacement and not pulling of the rail is recommended.
@c-shepard
@c-shepard 5 жыл бұрын
Are you required to cut replacement frame sections off another salvage car? Does GM sell these aluminum sections to specific shops? @@VetteSource
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 5 жыл бұрын
@@c-shepard you can go either way. With the amount of frequent frame damage C7's are incurring when wrecked, GM sells pretty much every piece of the frame to do repairs with. Used pieces will just save you some $$$ over new.
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 5 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Isaac Rice Honestly, I am not a big fan. They claimed when the C7's came out that it was lightweight and strong, but that has not been my experience in the salvage end of the business. The welds look very cheap to me and are a constant failure point in collisions. I have seen entire front frame sections ripped off the cars in moderate front end collisions and cars completely ripped in two down the middle in extreme collisions.
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 5 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Isaac Rice No problem. I am witholding judgement until I see them in the wild and wrecked. I think this push towards aluminum as a major structural component is the elephant in room for the auto industry. Just look at the cracked frames on the Audi R8's, catastrophic damage incurred in the new aluminum Ford trucks, and the Corvette frames like I mentioned. Aluminum being more brittle than steel will always be a problem, but hopefully they can figure out the material science to make them stronger.

@@7884mac yep, using the Corvette suspension is a popular conversion. You may be aware already, but the C5 Corvettes use a transaxle setup with the transmission in the rear of the car. The front and rear suspensions are "corporate" looking and resemble a front wheel drive setup in quite a few ways. The C4 suspension is the last old school style IRS axle made, and looks great installed on the earlier model cars.

It is repairable, it's just not the easiest spot to fix when it has been damaged. Make sure you have a good frame guy with right equipment, as he will need to make sure everything is lined back up for proper fitment.

What you're looking at in this video IS the frame for the car. Since it's a unitized chassis, you will have to perform quite a bit of cutting and modification to both cars to make it fit another body shell on top on the C5 unibody. It would be much easier to cut the suspension mounting points off the C5 and integrate them into the frame of the car you want to build.

Hey Juan, no cutting. Use a heat gun in conjunction with a five in one tool and small screwdrivers/chisels and you can release the entire assembly in one large piece. There are also 2 or 4? 7MM screws on the vertical tub surface attaching it to the frame rails but are easily visualized once you have it torn down. Let me know if you need any additional information👍

All Corvettes C4 and up are a unibody construction and not the older traditional body bolted onto frame. What you see in the video is the unibody structure minus the majority of the body panels, which are either bolted or glued onto this structure. The front and rear suspensions are also bolted to this piece and are not a part of it. Daniel, I always say anything can be done, but it this case it will probably be much more time than it's worth to try and make it work. It would require you to slice up your Nova like a tube frame drag car, and basically slide the hollow shell down on top of the unibody structure of the Corvette. Not impossible, just ALOT of metal work, time, and expense.
