An extra tip for those trying this: if you're struggling to pull the new rods up into place, you can use the hook of the old rods to grab them and pull them upward through the mounting holes. Once they're in place you just unhook them again. I found that this was much easier than having to reach down into the machine where I didn't have much leverage.

You guys saved us hundreds dollars on a repair guy or brand new washer! We just moved into our house in November, and of course, the washer we inherited keeps going off balance even if we just try to wash a few things, or else it stops and refills over and over, taking laundry hours to get done, and then sometimes it's still just sopping wet. Spin cycles sounds like helicopters trying to land in 'Nam. We started thinking that right off the bat, we're going to have to spend 100s of dollars on a new washer but then I decided to look up the symptoms and found this video. My husband and I decided we had nothing to lose by giving this fix a try, and bad suspension rods seemed like the probable culprit. We installed the replacement kit in about 45 minutes and since then, our washer is working like new! For fun, I tried a load with a heavy blanket and towels and it worked like a dream! Thank you, appliance part pros!

Thank you so much for the instruction video! I am a 57 year old woman and was able to install the suspension rods without any help and have my Roper back in service in a little over an hour. My only tips would be to definitely WEAR GLOVES and maybe have a block of wood or someone to hold up the washer tub while putting the new rods into the placement cups. That metal is so sharp that you don't even know your cut til you see blood all over the place and the tub is a bit heavier than I could lift with one hand. Other than those two things, anyone could do this installation and save hundreds of dollars on a repairman or new washer. Total cost, $41.00 which includes the springs which were not a part of this washing machine.
@daphnebasset940

Exactly! If you’re trying to do this yourself, the tub is REALLY heavy. Thanks for the suggestion on the block of wood. I might have to resort to that because it’s MUCH harder than it appears.

Worked like a champ. These instructions were very helpful. I did need some help holding the top from falling back, lifting the rod, and putting the little corner piece back on. It wasn't hard, but I just needed another couple hands. Also, my old rods and springs seemed to be fine and intact when I removed them, but the new ones keep the drum from the violent spin cycle from before. Thank you!

Well, the parts arrived. Got the OEM. It was a rough hour installing it. However, I'm 67 and in stage 4 COPD. You young guys won't have any trouble at all. One note of caution. When raising the washer back up after setting the rods in the bottom, raise the washer slowly so the front rods don't slip out the bottom. They are only being held in place by a small piece of plastic that can slip through the hole and come back out. Just ran a test cycle. It runs like the day I bought it seven years ago. Thank you Matt and Appliance Parts Pros. $65 and one hour vs $1500 replacement appliances.

Great video! My Amana did not have the inner metal lip to temporarily hang the new spring hooks on when the washer was on its side so it was difficult to pull the springs up high enough to slip on the new plastic parts. To resolve this I temporarily placed a short 2x4 under the tub/motor so the tub sat just a little bit higher. I was then able to pull the springs up high enough. I suggest wearing a long sleeve shirt when you replace the rods. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and repeatedly sliced my forearms on all the metal edges and roughed up tub lip.

Great video. Thank you for sharing. I installed them with help form my son. I would pull up on the suspension rod and he would place the plastic bearing. I struggled a bit since the new rods have so much tension. I used an old suspension rod hook to get leverage and pull the suspension rod through the hole. This actually made it easier. Although it was a bit challenging, your video was perfect plus it feels rewarding knowing that I installed them myself. Much appreciated.

Really well done tutorial. Bravo! If your model of washer has slots in the bottom retainers, you don't have to lay the machine onto its back. You can remove and replace the rods by accessing from the top only. I went through the hassle of laying the machine down in my small laundry room, only to find out that it was unnecessary. The washer model in this vide doesn't have the slots so the only way to remove the rods is through the bottom of the machine.

Great video and replacement of suspension springs solved the violent shaking issue during the spin cycle, would like to add an answer to a question I had, "How do you know if the suspension springs are bad?". When you push down on the tub and it bounces up and down then the suspension springs are bad. Before replacement when pushing down on the tub one time until it came to a stop and then releasing the tub would bounce up and down 5 to 6 times. After replacement of the suspension springs the tub doesn't even bounce up and down 1 time.

Have a Maytag mvwc565fwo top loading washer that is making a load knocking noise. I noticed when I move the tub assembly side to side it makes the noise and also a groaning noise. Have not opened it up but assume this is the problem? I was able to eliminate the noise just by lubricating around the top area of the suspension mount. This might explain why even with the springs in place, the basket still goes out of balance. Can you confirm that the rods need to be straight and this is not a modified design. Thanks for the real DIY video man! The water in the drain plug made a mess and getting the top lifted off got caught in those tabs both got me too (complete with wet towel). I am ordering my rods today. I wanted to make sure I needed and buy the correct parts before ordering. Your suspension rods still working well?

This is a great video …. Except ideas on how to accomplish putting new rods in the bearings trying to hold up a HEAVY drum. For those of us who don’t do this every day, trying to pull this kind of weight straight up is really hard. Maybe consider some tricks to help women and some men manage this. I’m now on hour #2 trying to manage the swap out and I’ve only got one done because it’s just too heavy to Pull the rod back up through the hole at the corner. If anyone has a trick they’d like to share on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Same here, I can’t pull the rod up with one hand and turn the cup with the other- feels like it’s superglued on!

Does it matter which way the rod hook faces?

Found a permanent fix. When you get your springs out and pop the caps open. Just put super glue and baking soda on the sponge and place cap back together. Works great and keeps going strong for years

How can you tell you need new suspension rods? The ones you replaced look "good"... if i checked mine out would there be obvious signs of wear & tear?

I think you need to replace these if the drum bangs the sides when it's spinning.

I replaced them with much trepidation. When i removed the old parts i didn't see any discernable damage/ wear & tear... but skeptically moved forward.... and it worked!

@@yehoshuab5903 It feels good when you fix something, even though there are many other things you'd rather do. I'll be doing this job this weekend. I'm very thankful for KZfaq.

Replaced rods on a Maytag similar model 3 years old. Still shaking like crazy. Floor is level, turned the agitator by hand to check for bearing noise no problems. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I have a really old whirlpool top load washer that shakes in rinse and spin cycles. Appliance guy told me older machines don’t have suspension springs. What would I get in place of that for older whirlpool.
