What a refreshing video. Too many videos are more about the presenter and not about the job at hand. This is straight and to the point. Thanks a million.

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! I am partially blind and on disability so my finances are tight. I don't have the money to get taken advantage of by a repair shop / repair call out. With this video, I was able to disassemble everything and get the broken part out and I've ordered a new part and will be able to put the new part in when it gets delivered. I'm so grateful for this video.

This was so so helpful! My dear husband is not the least bit "handy" with tools, so I'm the nearest thing to a DIY repair person at our house. Even though I haven't done much in the way of appliance repair, this video was clear, easy to understand and made it possible for me to get my washer working again!! It took me much longer, in part because I discovered one of the rubber shock absorbers on the motor housing was missing or had disintegrated. But I did it! THANK YOU! Keep up your helpful work.

Thanks so much, my husband took the machine apart and then I went out to get the part. By now husband is at work and I was too impatient to wait for him to get home. I found this video and had the machine up and running in about 36 minutes ( hardest part was replacing the bottom clip on motor and the 2 top clips on the shell. Did not have the strength to make that easy:( So happy machine is working and I did it!!!

You guys rock! My neighbor thought I was nuts thinking I was trying to watch a movie and do some washer repair at the same time. He was impressed with your instructional video when I showed him I was just following along while replacing the coupler. My wife and I thank you for not only saving us some money but time as well. Our Sears/Kenmore washer has served us well and we weren't looking forward to parting with it just yet. Watching your other videos gave me the confidence to remove the inner and outer tub and clean off about ten years of soap scum and stuck on debris. Again, many thanks. BTW-- There was no 'trick" to putting back on the outside cover. The procedure was pretty straight forward.

FYI, be careful with these "improved" couplers. I understand that adding the metal reinforcement ring to the inside of the plastic ends makes them stronger and less likely to break. but it also can cause a new problem of it's own. My old one broke, so I installed the improved coupler. Somehow, over the course of a few weeks, my metal ring came disconnected from the plastic part. It pulled out and they became separated. So the motor shaft was spinning and the metal ring was spinning, but the metal ring was not inside the plastic all the way, so the washer would not work as it should. I used some Gorilla glue to glue the metal rings into the plastic pieces so they don't come apart from each other. hopefully this helps but I may have caused the initial problem by tapping them on the shafts in a poor way. I'd suggest using a SMALL tool to tap them on. One that does not come into contact with the plastic. I must have used too big of a tool that pushed the plastic apart from the inner metal ring just slightly.

This was fantastic! You covered all the bases: 1) Explained what the problem was (motor coupling needed replacement); 2) Explained how to take apart the washing machine to gain access to the motor coupling; 3) Explained how to replace the coupling, including the handy tip about seating the part correctly using the head of a screwdriver. You turned what would have been a six hour exploratory exercise (with no guarantee of finding the problem/part) into a HALF HOUR repair success story! Thanks!!!

I do have one more question. After I had everything back together I realized that I had not added back this cardboard/paper to the bottom of the motor where it had come off. My guess is that it was to keep any wires to touch each other and short out. But there is nothing to touch under the motor. Is it important to take it back apart and put this back on? plus.google.com/u/0/photos/yourphotos?pid=6039682535727147826&oid=107591688336663880809

Matt, you're my hero. My washer would fill and drain, and motor would run, but would not agitate or spin. This took 45 minutes max and was so simple following these instructions. It was clear as soon as I got it apart. The pegs were gone and the rubber was shredded to nothing. There was rubber dust everywhere. THANK YOU! Saved me SO MUCH MONEY! (Re some other comments, one side of the coupler was stuck on, so I pried, turned, pried, turned, pried, turned, eventually it did pop off.)

Very helpful video. My Kenmore is a 90 Series, model 110.C28902790 (the "C" is for the Canadian model, I believe), but it's almost exactly the same as in the video. In my case, I discovered that the problem wasn't the motor coupling, but rather a broken plastic lid switch. But, following this video gave me a chance to check the condition of the coupler parts, check the hoses for blockages, and clean out the accumulated dust bunnies inside the machine. When the coupler actually does go, it'll be an easy job. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for this video. It was my first time working on my washer and didn't have $700 to buy a new one. Bought the coupler for just under $20 and then started ripping into the back of the washer. I got frustrated and found your video and 20mins later it was "fixed". Now I say "fixed" because it took me another 40 mins to get the back of it together that I ripped off. Seriously thank you so must and the instructions couldn't have been easier. plus you saved me over $700 and tax for a new washer. Here's to another 20 years with this one.

You guys are fantastic! This is the second time I've had to change that coupler out. Once 5 years ago, and once this morning. Your videos have made it so much easier for me. I've changed my hood switch, the dog cams inside the agitator, and something on the water pump I forget what it was. Also, on my dryer, it's been the thermostat, drum roller belt and the gas control switch. I figure over the past 12 years that I've owned these two machines, I've only had to spend $100 in parts thanks to you guys and your videos. If I had bought 2 new machines it would have been $2400+ and who knows what kind of headaches. Not even to mention you've supplied all the parts I needed and only off of the recommendations when I was just able to give you the symptoms I was experiencing. You guys rule! Here's to many more years as a thankful customer. Thank you!

I just wanted to drop a thanks for the video. I'm not handy at these things and I don't think I could have fixed my washer without your video. My washer wasn't spin cycling. I assumed it was the coupler because the washer stopped when I opened the lid. A friend advised me to replace the lid switch and coupler at the same time since both parts are pretty cheap. I was surprised to find that the coupler was in good shape but I replaced it anyway. I just ran my first load of laundry and it spin cycled properly. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it was the lid switch that was causing the problems. Thanks again for your help!

Tks very much. Followed your instruction and repairs proceeded like a charm. The only complication was my Whirlpool Thintwin LTE5243DQ3 motor at bottom was offset by about 45 degrees, so once the washer shell was removed, the motor shaft wasn't point right at me. This made removal/reinstallation of motor difficult as the pump and hoses were in the way.. Mine is in a narrow apartment bathroom so there really much wiggle room to do the repair.. Other than that, the procedure in the video explained the process very well !!

Now that's a professional presentation. Just hope the pump on my Kenmore 70 series direct drive that witnessed the waning days of the golden age of rap/hiphop and helped cause the downfall of Sears because it was too well built is also facing the front since the washer is boxed in by the dryer in a tiny utility room and I'd like to just lift the housing enough to remove a piece of something making noise in the pump.

Fantastic. My wife had our machine prior to meeting to her (10+years ago) and hopefully we'll have it for 10 more.

@TheMacandpcguy It's actually not a bad design at all. The rubber piece is there in case the transmission locks up, in which case one or more pieces of the coupling would break, saving the motor and the transmission from further damage. It's much cheaper and easier to replace the coupling. This direct drive washer design is also one of the easiest to work on.

Well, I'm no mechanical genius but damned if I was paying for a new washer if I didn't have to! After first replacing the agitator parts (thanks KZfaq) and that didn't work, this was my next step (if this didn't work I was done with it). Lo & behold....it spins!!! I can't say how many times I ran back from the laundry room to the kitchen to review the next step but I did it. Thanks KZfaq & AppliancePartsPros!

Nice fully explanative video with nice quality! I'm going to watch them all. I only work on commercial coinop laundry equipment and need to learn more about the domestic machines. Most of the insides are the same but the cabinets are different.

wow.... this is hands down the best DIY video I have ever followed for a project. thank you so much. I looked up a couple others on this subject and it left me unsure of myself. then once watching your video I realized it was so easy! Its amazing what clear and concise instructions can do! Plus it earned me some bonus points around the house :)

The new style coupler has been used in production, it is not just a replacement upgrade, so it's not surprising its there. The couplers can get stuck on pretty good, you can try a little pry bar or claw hammer to pry it off. I have heard of people even cutting them with a hammer and chisel. You can also use a little penetrating oil. Be careful not to damage anything else!

Check that the drain is clear and draining properly. If the pump is getting all the water out then it should be ok. These machines have a clear plastic tub, look around the outer tub to see if you can see anything stuck between the tubs that would slow the spin down. Next it could be the clutch is slipping or the brakes are dragging, go to our website forum and do a search for: Replacing direct drive washer brake shoes. This will give you an idea of how to check out the brake shoes and clutch.
