Thanks for joining me again here at the Joy of Carving! I’ve been thinking a lot about the best project for a complete novice to whittling, what would be the best beginner project for someone who has never whittled before? And these mushrooms sprang to mind! Easy to do and fantastic when they’re finished as a little driftwood ornament.

Hey! Thanks for the video! I was looking into how to carve mushrooms to incorporate them in my designs. Coming from a carpentry background when cutting into endgrain it often helps to dampen the wood. This helps not to rip out the fibers.

How do you go about doing the cut-outs, I'm assuming power tools?

I created a template and used a band saw to cut the blanks but I used a regular coping saw for many years, I still go to the hand tools more often as I find the control on them better 😊

How do I do it with wood that isn’t in the shape of a mushroom already?

The easiest way would be to make a blank cutout by sawing the rough shape from the wood you have. If you trace the shape of the mushroom onto the wood then carefully saw away the parts you don’t need, you’ll be left with the shape I start with in the video. Hope that helps! 😊😊🙏
