Speed boards like the iSonic are great fun, but far more technical to sail than a classic free-ride board.
I can drive a car... but I think I'd have troubles driving a formula 1 car.... same thought!
Hopefully a few tips here will help you though!

Top class explanation . I would upine that for 90 odd percent of windsurfers a carve would more than fit the bill . I have them all . 11 boards in total but the old dame carve 131 is my favorite. i suppose my age is a factor but comfort and control are key at whatever level youre at. If youre young fit and enthusiastic go for it . If not , buy a suite of new fins and new footstraps for your mistress and youll be rewarded . The quality of fins nowadays is staggeringly good but get advice from an expert so you get a fin compatible with the character of the board.

So tempted to get an older slalom board with a 6.5 430 mast combo, my biggest kit is 5.2 and 90L but on the flatter light days would like some real speed !

Do it! I use a free race board and 65 Sail as my Lightwind alternative, either that or some sort of foil set up!

Amazingly helpful insights here. I’ve picked up a 113l freerace board to use alongside my 135 freeride board and I had been really struggling with it, until I tried doing the same things you suggest here. Your video confirms I was already on the right lines 👍 I have to get in the foot straps mega early and set the board up for a warp speed run. If I don’t do this the board accelerates so quickly, I’ll be already at 20kts plus, trying to get my foot in the back strap, which for me is virtually impossible. It’s definitely a more committed and occasionally terrifying experience driving my 113l freerace board compared to the larger freeride one!

Love it! I ride slalom boards for speed sailing ( Isonic 80ltre + others ) and free race for the chop. I found it interesting what you said about the drag on freeride boards. I'm used to the super light quick off the mark boards and I bought a beginner intermediate Tabou bullit 125 to help me get back into it after a long time off with injury. It is great to float around in lightwinds and build up my body but cripes the drag on your body! I couldn't believe how much easier the slalom / freerace ones were. They just accelerate when the wind hits them. Much more fun. Also the tip to keep them flat fore and aft gybing. I often lose speed and I now plan to try and focus on that more. I've been using your freeride tips to get going ( plus bouncing the board if needed) but I might try getting in the straps if there is enough wind.

excellent video my friend, I have a question if it is not a problem, I have been surfing all my life, I am now 45 years old and yesterday I stood on the isonic 115 lit 2016 for the first time and it annoyed me because I had the feeling that the board would not start to glide the way I was used to before. I'm experienced and I've driven slaloms before, but this is quite different. it took me a couple of hours to find the trim etc... I hope it's just a matter of habit, because the board is really fast, but it's very demanding due to the height of the boom and the position of the legs in relation to the sail. I just want to ask how long did it take you to get used to it? thank you and once again a great video with the explanations we need! greeting

Im trying to learn planing with an rrd firestorm 123 liters. My friends told me that a freeride was preferable but i got this one instead. I think and hope this video will help, today I just had my first planing sensation going slightly down wind and the board started to fly and it was all crazy.

Firestorm is like a Futura- fast free-race- a lot of characteristics to Slalom boards. Technical and tough to sail, but when it clicks they’re rapid!

Nice Video, as always! It was interesting to see how you really needed to work in order to get the board planing. Nico Prien once said in a comparison he wouldn't recommend the iSonic to someone who doesn't spend 3 days a week on the water, because people with less water time will have more fun with the Ventura or the Carve which is even easier than the Ventura. Would you agree?
@Cookiesports

Hi! That’s kinda my summary at the end of this video too… is this board really for you?… 🤔 possibly a future/carve/go might be better as far more forgiving and easier to handle.

I have Isonics. I had an 87ltre ( +20ltres over my weight) and an 80ltre. No way would I use them in big chop. It might be ok if you're in your 20s -30s and fit but I'm in my 60s and can't be bothered riding something that takes that much concentration to avoid disaster. I love them in flat water. I've switched to comfy freerace in the chop and my sailing has improved heaps as I'm game to push it with full confidence in the board.

I've been sailing an Isonic 131L with either a SV Turbo 7.0 or NCX 8.5 and I've had no issue getting it up and cranking. However, my Isonic 107L is a different beast and with the 7.0 I'm having some trouble stopping it from rounding up after a beach/ water start and it's a fight to bear away in gusts to get on the plane. Your description of driving hard from the straps and maybe timing with waves is the condition I've found that finally gets it going and then there's no stopping! I've played with mast base position, I ride with a high boom and the Turbo feels balanced when cranking. What else may I be missing?

Have you tried a free-race board? Isonics and other slalom boards are technical and tough to sail…. Master the skills on something like a small futura. 👌
@antc5010
@antc5010 6 ай бұрын
It's worth a try, but at the other end of the spectrum I sail a 94L free wave Kode, which also needs a good "kick" to get on the plane and once there it's away. I guess my question is more "why do these smaller boards feel hesitant to get up on the plane in comparison to their bigger versions?" Am I changing down board sizes too soon for the wind strength? I've sailed Isonics for many years, but getting the smaller ones cranking always seems to be a challenge. Maybe I'm lacking in energy needed for these smaller boards(?). @@Cookiesports

Hey cookie, great vid it convinced me to buy a slalom board. I already sailed with it 2 times, but had real difficulties in getting planing. I needed the hardest gusts to get going and the board stopped planing pretty quick. How does this come? I ride a fanatic falcon 114

Don’t have to be in a seat harness to ride this kit… can help if you’re mega over-powered but not essential. I’ll choose waist 99% of the time- as are most pro slalom racers too.

I’m wondering if my Severne Fox 120 falls into this category and the tips you gave apply? If so, do you have any advice on stance to not overweight tail, but not catapult? From your video, I wonder if I’m leaving it too long before getting in the back strap.

Great timing for this video. I just picked up a 2019 116L JP Super Ride that is 68 wide. I would say it seems a little more free race, definitely flies over the chop much better and faster than my Naish 120, 77 wide freeride. I’ve been struggling to get the JP on the plane because I think I’m expecting it to react like my 77 wide even though the volumes aren’t that different; front foot by the mast base and driving it forward, then moving back when it gets going. When I do that on the JP it just sticks and I struggle to get it going even though I’m on a 6.5 with ample wind. I started messing with the mast base position thinking that was the problem with not much success. Sounds like what you are explaining is what I’m experiencing. The dimensions on this board are quite similar to the Isonic. Any thoughts on mast base position on these boards? Thx. Great video!
@loskiff
@loskiff 10 ай бұрын
Mast base position depends on some factors: fin size, boom height, sail size, wind strength. Try to vary mast foot position along with the boom height. There is not a formula to calculate the best positions: experiment a lot: start with the base all way forward and go back with 1-2cm. You will find a position that works for you where the board hovers on the chop and it's not sticked to the water.
