Thank You! I have the exact same universal 220v plug that you have with the exception that I like the wire clamps on yours better than mine. I'm installing a 220v 5,000 watt garage heater and already have a 220v outlet for my Lincoln stick welder and needed a new male plug in to fit that receptacle. My local building supply store didn't have a male plug so I ended up going to a local electrical contractor's store and this universal plug set me back $27 bucks and some change, but I'm glad they had one. It's been awhile since I've done any electrical work so I needed to refresh my memory LOL. I couldn't remember if Polarity mattered on single phase 220v and you answered that question for me. I didn't want to FRY a Brand New garage heater that I just bought before I could even try it out. Thanks again. ~MO~

When you use a white wire as a second hot wire, you need to designate it as a hot wire with some red tape, especially when wiring to the circuit breaker or outlet box and even in service cord plugs

I may be wrong on this...........But with a 220v Both Wires are HOT and only 1 ground, that's why it's set up with 2-20 Amp breakers with the White on one side and the Black on the other..........Thus gaining 220 Volts rather than 110 volts. Am I correct? It's been awhile but I haven't forgotten everything about electrical wiring.

thank you for the video. I was noticing the foam insulation and thought I might suggest a thermal barrier paint for the spray foam in case of spark if you haven't already. Thanks again for the video

You made a comment about the manufacturer not wanting the screws to be fully removed. The reason they don't want you to remove them is because the threads are crimped at the end just a little, have you notice when you take them out you hit a spot that is a little harder to turn. The crimp is to keep the screw from falling out and being lost if it loosens. Every time you remove the screw it get a little looser each time.. not a major problem, but it's nice to know the screws will always be there when it's time to replace the wire.

Yes, you are supposed to wire it with the correct polarity. Black hot goes to Small blade. It may not matter too much in this instance, but teach consistency and care. Electricity is nothing to be cavalier about.

With this stated, a 3-pole, non-grounded connection is intended to have the majority of the current through the hot legs of the split-phase connection. Both have a potential of 120 volts AC to ground. Across the legs, the potential is 240 volts AC and the majority of the current is through these legs. But a small percentage is used from one leg to the neutral. This can lead to a problem IF the neutral is broken and the device is also grounded through the neutral as there WILL be 120 volts potential in the frame. Also, if the neutral conductor is the same gauge as the legs and there is a fault, that conductor could become over-loaded since both legs could short to it. As since there is no circuit breaker on a neutral, there is potential for fire. Consider 240 VAC heater elements are switched by one leg only. If there is a short from the heater element to ground, the leg that is unswitched will continue to draw, even when the machine is off! There are no safety controls for this on older appliances

The nominal voltage is actually 120/240 volts but many people make that mistake

I made one of these welder cords up for the first time a few days ago and it was a pain in the ass because I had to use #6 Guage s-o cord and it was so stiff and didn't want to cooperate..

I like to add a bit of extra slack to ground, such that if the wire gets yanked from the plug the phase & neutral go first and I can't end up in a situation with hot phase and neutral but no solid ground.

I fear I'll have to do the reverse if I get a new welder. Change it at the outlet. Newer 220 plugs are usually the 4 prong. Actually whatever I buy is just usually different than what I have.

Please read my comment. If you have a local Contractor's Electrical Supply store they will have a Universal 220v kit to fit whatever your outlet takes. Hope that helps, I know it's been 2 years since you posted this comment but I actually ran into the same problem today.

@@micjam1986 You should check the NEC code book again if you haven't already. All sub panels in the United States are required to have the ground connected and bonded to the neutral in the main and all sub panels. My dad is an electrician and I'm also friends with an industrial electrician and a lineman. They all will tell you that your ground and neutral are connected in your panel. This is why you get a 0 voltage potential from neutral and ground. Because they are bonded together in the sub panel. We have a sub panel in the shop and it requires a neutral bonded and connected to the ground wire as per NEC code. This is also for NEC building code. Edit: Your building will NOT pass NEC and building code if you do NOT have your neutral bonded or connected to your ground in the electrical box. And if it passes then you have a bad building inspector. Without your ground connected or bonded to your neutral in your breaker box including sub panels. GFCI outlets and faulty equipment will not work and will present an electrical shock or electrocution hazard. This is why this is a code. You can test this by putting a rod in the ground and measuring the voltage from that rod in the ground to the hot lead from your outlet using an extension cord. You should get around 120 - 125 volts on your meter. You can even do the same with the neutral. The ground wire is connected to a physical ground rod put in the ground.

For those watching, there is a reason they make 250 volt Rated plugs and receptacles in 20A, 30A, 40A, 50A, and 60A. There is no way this mill should be connected to a 50A branch circuit. Correct way, name plate on the machine with a motor amps times 1.25 equals the breaker and the receptacle amp values.

It's a 220v 25 ft. heavy duty extension cord, very well made. bought mine on eBay, and have seen them at the local Northern tool store. i wanna get a welder soon and i have a 220 plug in my garage the problem is that its upside down as compared to the welding plug so if i plug in the welder it would put unnecessary strain on the welding plug is this an easy fix or do they have another adapter i can just plug into it and have it right side up?

If you shut the breaker off to that outlet, in fact, even better shut the power off to your house, you can pull that outlet out and rotated to the right orientation. otherwise If you dont use your welder much, just keep it unplugged, unless you need it then plug it in while using it. It won't hurt anything to have it upside down for occasional use

I'm a bit puzzled regarding the electrical system in the US. Do you have both single phase 110V and 220V? We have where i live on a normal household three phases, zero and ground. Single phase is 220V, two or three is 380V.

With an old Drill Press / Milling Machine like that it is advisable to check the specs... in case you need 3-Phase 220v. You normally don't need to worry about this with welders or plasma cutters... but with the motorized machines...

I got a 220 welder. It came with the 30 amp u had in the video. I am going to wire it to a 40 amp plug so I can run it off of my generator. My thought process of this is to wire it like the 30 amp and cut out the bare ground wire. But my thought is also to make it a 4 amp it needs 2 grounds and 2 hot. But the welder isnt setup for that. Which way would be better? I would need to combine the 2 postives into the fuse. Which will make it a 30 amp with a 40 amp plug but it would give more postive draw at the fuse. The application is a 220 flux welder that I need a 40 amp plug on.

You shouldn't advise people to not worry about which the black and white wires go to, sure for most cases the electronics will work normally. However, the fusing or safety designs on some electronics are only wired to one side of the system and can allow for dangerous circumstances. Most quality designs are protected to both sides, but we've all seen shoddy design work. Especially when you can see clearly on the replacement end at 7:40 it's labeled for each color wire.. just throwing it out there.
