The AC compressor clutch is an electromagnetic device that engages the air conditioning compressor. This unit is composed of three parts, the clutch plate, the hub and the coil. The clutch coil is the one that creates an electromagnetic field around it, which attracts the plate and engages the clutch. The plate is also linked to the drive or serpentine belt and is driven by the crankshaft. The hub and the plate have to be calibrated to a specific gap using a feeler gauge.
The purpose of this video is to illustrate how almost all AC compressor clutches are wires. The actual wiring may contain other components, such as transistors and IC computer chips, but the control itself is the same. In all cases, these extra components are used to control the relay coil, which in itself controls the AC compressor clutch. This simple circuit can also be used to wire an older vehicle due to lack of parts and high costs.
Here is how this circuit works.
This circuit has one relay, a refrigerant pressure switch, and a micro switch. The micro switch is a W O T or wide open throttle switch used to disengage the compressor clutch during wide open throttle conditions. This is done to protect the compressor from damage at high engine speeds.
Electrical current flows from the 12 volt power feed to the fuse. Then current flows to terminal... Get the whole story right here in this video...Enjoy...

Yes, to my knowledge was used first on the Toyota Prius. The electric refrigerant compressor works on 144 volts. This amount of electricity may cause serious damage to your body if whoever is working on it doesn't know what he's doing. The more technology advances the more training that is needed. We have a video on this channel about the Prius Hybrid A/C electric compressor. Go to the Hybrid Playlist on this channel. Thanks for posting...

My clutch won't engage. Got the 1990 4runner with complete 3.4 swapped engine, tranny, wiring harness and computer box. I don't where to start. I wish the compressor can be tested without needing pressure. I don't see the point in my case to charge with freon if I know there's wrong electrical wiring connection or the compressor itself is broken.

Ok, well correct me if I'm wrong; the air-comp. shuts off and if press. drops it starts again. Isn't that what you want? In other words, this circuit maintains a specific pressure at all times. Post back with a numbered application spec sheet if possible, as in 1) xxx 2) xxx and so on. I may be able to get a diagram to you. The printed and Kindle book version for this book is available at Amazon dot com.

Great job on the vid and wiring diagram. I tried to apply this application to control my onboard air compressor and two pressure switches (one low for trigger and one for max PSI) to inflate the air bags mounted in the rear of my lowered pickup. The problem I ran into is when the max PSI is reached the compressor shuts off but when the pressure drops a few pounds the compressor starts. I must need another relay to bypass the max PSI so the low trigger is seen for the compressor to start.......

Sure, this is basically the same wiring scheme as a non-computer controlled system. If it's a climate control is the same, but a module (computer) makes the decision. But, the computer also gets the information from the pressure sensors. I would suggest using high quality sensors. Thanks for posting.

It seems to me that you'll solve all your problems if you manage to get a regulated pressure switch. It's a simple screw on pressure switch that also has a small adjustment screw in the middle. Then it's just a process of adjusting the PS to the desired pressure. Another option is to use two pressure switches and one or two relays. The two switches can then be 30PSI and 60PSI as you mentioned before...Does that make sense?

Thanks for the reply. Using your original A/C diagram with the two pressure switches in series (low trigger is 30# and high is 60#) the pump inflates to 60# and opens to cut power to pump. What I need to make this work correctly is the relay or relays must activate when the pressure drops to 30# to start the pump when the contacts close and cut off when the 60# contacts open at which time the relays reset and when the pressure is 30# the cycle restarts the pump. Hope this makes more sense???

At the compressor, one wire goes to GROUND and the other to 12 volts. Some Comp-Clutches have only one wire and grounded at the body. Makes sense?

2011 Honda fit- Ac compressor clutch will not engage. Applied 12 v at relay socket, this will engage the clutch manually. Bench tested relay, applied 12 v and got continuity across the load side. Tested relay socket with multimeter, on load side, 12v available , other pin has continuity to compressor. On trigger side, constant 12v source ( reversed polarity -12v for some reason) whether or not AC switch is on. Tested pressure sensor on Low side of compressor line with multimeter, continuity checked. Tested temperature protection switch at compressor, continuity checked. Tried disconnecting battery on the car for ECU reset, tested all fuses I could think of, FAN, SUB FAN, MG CLUTCH, AC. There are several relays in the actual fuse box which have no labels, unable to test those because I don't know what they do, auxiliary relay box in engine bay contains 3 relays, fan x2 and AC Clutch, applied 12 v all click when voltage is applied. Totally lost on what to do next, resistance across the clutch coil is 3 ohms and it works when 12v is directly applied either by battery to clutch or jumping the relay socket. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@ADPTraining
@ADPTraining 11 жыл бұрын
No, that is not correct. If you leek carefully, what triggers the relay are the low and high pressure switches. It's a simple circuit. If the low pressure switch kicks (due to low Freon) in compressor shuts off. If high pressure switch kicks in (due to no cooling fan or overcharge) compressor also shuts off. Makes sense?

The connector that connects to the compressor coil wire doesn't have continuity and doesn't have power, so it's not sending power to the compressor. What could be the problem and do you know where that wire connects too?

Thank you for this video. I have a lexus rx350 2009 model with less than 160k mileage. Recently my sensor activated compressor got bad and I had to switch to a manual compressor. However, the compressor clutches have kept on burning (3 in a row). I discovered that the mechanic didn't use a relay to connect the compressor rather he connected it directly. Please I want to know if the compressor clutch getting burnt has anything to do with the absence of a relay. He was suggesting a faulty condenser (which I changed less than a year ago). Please I want to know my next step. Thank you
@ADPTraining
@ADPTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Your compressor clutch keeps burning because it stay ON all the time. Keep in mind that if it was a variable displacement compressor it's a different animal. So if you've changed to a MANUAL compressor, you need to wire the low and high pressure switch. I can custom make you a plug and play controller for that even you can install. Email or call me, get the number from my site. autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com

Does the clutch relay (from fuse/relay box under the hood) connect directly to the low cutoff switch, from the low cutoff switch then goes to the A/C and Heat Control panel located inside the vehicle? I have a feeling that the cable that communicates between the A/C and Heat Control panel with the cutoff switch is faulty, thus I can run another wire in place of the faulty wire from my control panel in my vehicle.

your diagram shows the switches going nowhere, it does not show how they tie into the compressor to tell it when to turn on and off. wouldn't the signal wire go through the switches to the relay that powers the compressor?

Hi, I’ve just got a few questions Here is the situation, i got 1 electric fan attach to my radiator and my a/c condenser attach in front of my radiator. when a/c turn off my fan will get signal from temperature switch near the thermostat to on when high temp and fan stop when meets the thermostat low designated temperature. With a/c on my fan will constanly on,was it trigger from the high pressure switch and low pressure switch? How can i plug in relay? How many relay should i need? Can i get a picture on a complete circuit with relay combining all of it?

@vasel208 8 жыл бұрын
The blinking a/c switch light you mention can be fixed by: •check battery terminals. Must be clean and tight. •check your a/c compressor belt. If it is loose the light will blink and a/c will not work. •Or faulty sensor located on the bottom of your a/c compressor. This job is more for a qualified auto a/c technician. Unless you are qualified and have the tools do the job yourself. As you will need to recover refrigerant from your a/c system with an refrigerant recovery machine to avoid injury from the under pressure refrigerant inside your a/c system. Remove the two bolts with 8mm spanner or 8mm socket and unplug wiring. Toyota should still sell the sensor.

You're inferring the vehicle's wiring system from this video, this is not the purpose of the video. There are various ways to interconnect an AC system. Use this video as a guide if you have no AC in your car and want to adapt one or if your AC is totally destroyed and you're doing it over. Don't use video as a repair guide, although some concepts are similar.

Why is the only wire coming from my compressor has continuity with ground? (I hope this make sense) i check the only wire going to compressor right behind the clutch and there was continuity with ground, i thought i would have have voltage power instead. Then i jumped 87 to 30 and the clutch would engaged, anyone with an input on this? Thank you.

José, the clutch is body grounded. So AC controller on adds voltage to actuate.

ADPTraining thank you, so if my single wire going to the compressor is meant for voltage , why do I have continuity to ground on the same wire. Note: the clutch is engaging just fine, just curious why I have ground a wire that gets voltage to actuate.

NO, NO, NO... Do not do that. Running the compressor like that will damage it. You need to evacuate, vacuum, add a bit of oil then recharge according to your vehicle's AC system weight. That is the only way to do it. Just adding refrigerant like that without even knowing how much you have in or HOW MUCH AIR is on the systems is useless and costlier for you. AC systems is one of those things in the car that's very expensive.
