When you purchase a security camera, it doesn’t normally come with a power source. Most cameras today are powered over Ethernet. I’ll show examples of cameras which can be powered with an adapter and one which must be powered with an adapter. Using a power injector and splitter is another way to provide a security camera with electricity. I’ll explore using a PoE unmanaged and managed switch and compare the two. I’ll demonstrate how an NVR can also be used to power your cameras.

Any recommedation on a cable/adapter that can connect to an older BNC connection camer to a POE switch so I can run it to BlueIris?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Even if you had an adapter you cannot power an older BNC camera with a PoE switch. If you had such an adapter you would damage the camera. These cameras are passive and do not talk back to the PoE switch resulting in the camera accepting all the power possible from the switch causing a camera burnout. You could however use a PoE injector and add electricity from the camera's power adapter to the Ethernet cat6 line. It would have to be plugged into a non-PoE switch. This is the adapter you could use as along as you have the camera's power adapter: amzn.to/3d4iNEv

The CAT6 standard has shielding, so here is what I am thinking: Consider where you will be running the cabling to reach each camera. Is the wire going to pass over a light fixture in the ceiling? Is the wire going to make a turn past an air conditioning unit with a [strong] motor built into it? (in a solid ceiling overhead) or past a mini-split air conditioning unit? If are gadgets that will produce EMF or RFI in some capacity, then cross-talk may not be an issue so much as "outside" interference is to consider. Also, "Cat6A can maintain 10 Gigabit speeds for the full 328 feet of Ethernet cable" (Firefold.com).

@newfiebort I have a question. I have a non-PoE IP cameras (these are 12 v output) but I have also a 54v PoE switch. Can I use my PoE for these cameras like for example I can use injector/splitter to make it work or it won't? That would mean I'll end up using power source?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 5 жыл бұрын
You cannot use a PoE switch to power the cameras by splitting out the power at the camera. I tried this before and it will damage the camera because the PoE switch is supplying power without regulation by the camera. You can however use a 12v adapter and inject power into the network cable and split out the power on the other end.

@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 3 жыл бұрын
It's not common to use a PoE switch to connect cameras to an NVR, unless you have specific network requirements. The NVR's camera ports will provide power to the cameras. If you need to use a PoE switch however, you can connect the switch to a camera channel port and the NVR will find all the cameras on the PoE switch. The issue here is bandwidth as the camera channel port is only 10/100 and you might have dropped frames and lag. You could also setup the PoE switch (with cameras attached) on your home network and also connect the NVR to the network (using the NVR's gigabit LAN port). The only restriction here is a lot of network traffic but if you have a gigabit setup, it won't be an issue. For more info see my videos on this topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLWfdtpezsDKfYk.html and this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7ShfLiKz5jdoZc.html

Thanks for the video. I've noticed that some PoE systems wire their PoE cameras differently. Works great as long as you plug the cameras directly into the their NVR, but can't add PoE compliant cameras nor take their proprietary PoE cameras and add them to a other security systems. Well, technically it is possible, but you have to rewire each camera to get them to work.

Hey! Your TP Powerline Extender solution should work, but keep in mind these extenders aren't as fast or reliable as a network cable. Make sure your router/modem is connected to this camera/nas setup somewhere. I would suggest connecting the Powerline Extender in the basement into the router/modem or another switch (which is connected to the router/modem) and then running network cable to the nas. Let me know if that helps. Thanks

Technically, yes, you can run a cable from an NVR camera port to a PoE Switch and the NVR will act as a router and hand out IP addresses to all the cameras added. You may however run into bandwidth issues as this NVR port is only 10/100. You could also add the cameras to your LAN and access them through the NVR over your network and not use any of the NVR camera ports on the back. Check out my other videos where I cover these scenarios in detail.

Hello my friend! I have seven cameras with hikvision 7600 nvr 8 poe port my question is can I plug all my camera into a netgear unmanage poe switch and then plug one wire into my nvr would I still get to see all my cameras please help im having trouble configuring this right now 🙏

Yes, that would work but you might have bandwidth issues if you are relying on 7 cameras to feed data through one 10/100 PoE port in the NVR. Can you connect the cameras and NVR to your network and access them individually over the network, instead of funneling them into 1 NVR camera port?

@@HomeTechDIY bandwidth issues! I haven't thought of it. I guess I won't go with that since I dont want any issues. My problem is me getting all the wires to my top floor since my house is three floors so I was planning on wire all the cameras into my garage using poe switch and then run only one cable to my nvr.

Why do none of my poe ports show they're receiving power? Every one of the is "dead". This is the 2nd NVR that has this issue so I'm sure it's not the NVR. What am I missing?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 3 жыл бұрын
That doesn't sound good. What are you expecting to see from the PoE ports? What camera model are you connecting directly to the NVR?

Can’t you use the injector and splitter to power the bigger camera? Or you absolutely have to power it with the plug? Please help!!

It depends on the camera. This cheaper brand does not recommend it. You'll need to check to specs to see if PoE+ or 802.3at.

This is my camera. I tried it and it works fine. So does this mean it is ok to use injection and splitter?

I'm no electrician but if it works, I personally would use an injector and splitter.

Great info but the title says "How to Wire & Power", so what about actually running the wires from outside and actually connecting them to power? What if it's a USB camera like WYZE?

The annoying thing is that some PoE switches are only rated 10/100mbps and some only offer PoE on half of the ports.
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed. At least (for the most part) they have updated the product titles to indicate how many ports are PoE. Just recently I remember having to look at the specs to figure that stuff out.

Good question. If one is unable to run new wires for cameras, they can take advantage of an existing line. For example, in my garage, I have a line to my basement but I am unable to add more lines because the walls are finished, but I want 2 cameras inside my garage and 4 outside; I can add a PoE switch to the pre-existing line. Does that answer your question?

Working on a NVR 4.0 system and have had some "rumors" that individual cameras may have stored or cached password credentials on them, which causes the management of same to become more complicated! I don't buy this because it sounds like "overkill". Do individual ONVIF cameras have the capacity to store or cache some sort of 'Identity' certificate by default, or is this an 'For added anti-tampering security' -type feature? Also, when encountering a ONVIF camera with significantly older firmware, my question is, 'How did these ever ship from a factory that way?!?' I could understand if the firmware was 2 or 3 years outdated, but 10 YEARS or more!?! That's a huge slap in the face to IP camera consumers and should embarrass the heck out of some vendors! {end mini-rant}

Isn't poe 48v not 12v?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 4 жыл бұрын
PoE is the delivery method. Most IP cameras can accept both voltages depending on the port you are using. If delivering power to the camera using a 12v adapter, you must use the 12 port of the camera. The power can be from a 12v adapter plugged into the camera or sent over an Ethernet cable using injectors and splitters (PoE method 1). If delivering power to the camera using a PoE switch, where the Ethernet cable is plugged into the camera's RJ-45 connector, then, yes, it's 48v. (PoE method 2). Both methods are delivering power, just in different forms. Hope this helps.
