Glad I found this video; the detector shown at the beginning of the clip is identical to the ones I am replacing in my home. Also, the unit on the right at the 1:26 mark is identical to the two units I purchased for replacement. My ceiling wiring has a black wire (connected), a white wire (connected) and a YELLOW wire (attached to a lone wire nut, but not connected in any series). Since the new harness has the black/white/red sequence as seen in your video, I will simply connect the black and white wires correctly (AFTER shutting things off at the breaker box) and leave the red wire as is. Do the shut off buttons work on each other? For instance, say one goes off in a common area and you are in your bedroom, could you then turn all of them off from the button in the bedroom?

I have three smoke alarms, two has the 3 wires harness and one on the second floor only has two. fire department wants us to have all 3 go off together as it's a rental house. I don't think it will be easy to run a new wire. What other option do I have? Other then buying new wifi smoke alarms. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My hot wire wasn’t connected on one of my detectors (KB homes, go figure) it had a beep as if the battery was low, I replaced it and it stopped, do I connect the hot somewhere?

The wiring harness won't pull or clip out of my Fre Angel SW1 optical interconnected, you could have perhaps shown the harness pull-out move more closely and the removal operation more closely at the start of the video.

Well this is a good video but not what I typed in search. I had one BLK smoke detector installed and one BLK smoke detector with carbon detection. Both are hard wired into the ceiling. I wanted to know how I can see it there is a camera in any of them? I see a pinhole on the top front and of course the sides are open all around not like the Kidde replacement hard wired one in another room that wasn't installed by an electrician. I hear all kinds of stories about some employees these days that do disgusting things. I am curious as to how to get peace of mind with the two I had installed. I can't reach up high enough to look inside the open slots, so I just don't know how to get that peace of mind since a stranger put them in. Mine has the connecting wires in the package they just plug into the existing ceiling wires.

You didn’t actually show how to twist/attach the wires together. Not a how to wire at all. Just a run down on wires. Very useful information, and it's good to know what the red is for. But from the title I expected a quick explanation of how to use pigtail wiring, which only one video on youtube explains.

So my landlord requested for everyone in my neighborhood that we were getting new smoke detectors. Well, they came and installed a few. But on my smoke detector they did not connect the red or black wire. It was completely untouched. It just had a white wire that was literally connected to the inside of the wall. Can anyone give me a idea of what this is? Or what it means? And then now all of a sudden this smoke detector isn’t working .

Help! Our smoke detector went off in the middle of the night for literally like 10 seconds and stopped. We decided to change all the batteries....?? One of the wiring boxes had a yellow wire just randomly not connected to anything. It did NOT have an enclosure on it like your orange one did. We don't know what to do with this random uncovered yellow wire.... Honestly, probably going to have to hire an electrician because We Don't Know!
