In this video How To Wire your Cable, Internet, and Satellite, I go over our standard practices for wiring your home so its prepped for these services.
⚡️FREE PREWIRE GUIDE:
tym.link/wireguide
Especially if you're trying to wire your own home, I think it's always a best practice to reach out to your local service providers. Some will even provide the wire for your Demarcation.
But when in doubt these are our recommendations for prepping your home for Internet, and Cable/Satellite.
Demarc. - (2)Cat6, (2)RG6, (1)18/2 and if you're running fiber inside the home, you'll want to run fiber with the Demarc as well.
Satellite Prewire - (4)RG6 and in snowy climates run (1)18/2 for a heater
Satellite Internet - (1-2)Cat6

Things have changed a lot in the four years since this video was made. Here in Toronto Canada fiber at a minimum 25 typically or 50 Mb/s with four nines reliability is the common installation now for both telecom and cable companies. You no longer need power for fiber as the home hub is typically in the living room and does not have a separate ONT that must be powered for its backup battery. It typically connects directly to a home hub that supports Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. for most moderately sized houses this will give seamless wi-fi coverage at particularly good speeds. The cable box is now the size of a pack of cigarettes and connects back to the home hub wirelessly as does the TV if you don't subscribe to a tv service and most tv's are now smart tv's able to access the vendors offerings as well as most apps like amazon prime, crave, and Netflix. The need for wired setup is less than it used to be even a couple of years ago. A battery backup is typically provided by the telecom provider but a small UPS for the home hub is recommended for the cable provider but not necessary as reconnection after reset is reliable and consistent.

Here in Canada the telecom provider (bell Canada) is doing fiber to the home in a lot of urban developments to the DMARC and often to where the modem/home hub will be located. Is it worth prewiring fiber inside the house in anticipation of this in the future or at the time of installation, probably ot as the ISP will run fiber directly yto the room where the home hub will be located.

Good stuff Matt. I'm in the middle of a project right now. I already pulled all the satellite cable stapled to the exterior. From each wall plate, I am running 2 CAT6, 2 RG6, and 1 CAT5 (phones for office use) -- all home run to a media box. Comcast is overhead, so the cable is stapled from the cable attachment to their demarc box. I was thinking of pulling their cable loose and entering the attic of the garage and then fish down to their demarc box. Would this be legit with regard to keeping "their" cable "outside?" Due to large trees, satellite was run across the ground to posts in a power ROW behind the lot. I was planning to install another demarc box for satellite entry. I will run the RG6 from there to the media box - I will go ahead in run 4 based on your recommendation.

Thanks for your videos on this. I think I'm missing something here. If I put a demarc box on the outside of the house and I run 2 Cat6 and 2RG6 and one 18/2 wire to it from the media panel in the basement, that is just for the phone company - in my case Verizon to run their line from the pole on the street to the house. Don't they typically still put their own box on the side of the house or is the point of demarc to prevent them from having to put their own box on the side of the house?? Same goes for satellite. I am assuming you mean to run the 4 RG6 and 18/2 cables from somewhere on eves of the house down to the media panel in the basement, right? Once you get the satellite cables ran down the media panel, its just a matter of installing some sort of junction box to then take those cables around to the needed outlets in the house, right?

I have internet and tv coax throughout my home. I pay for internet service. I would like to add a rooftop hd antenna and use the existing wiring in my home. How can I tell which wire is for internet and which is for tv (both are coax)? If I know that I can patch right into that wire that goes into my home for tv service theoretically providing antenna to all of my tvs. Thanks in advance.

Is there a particular type of RG-6 you recommend for the demarcation or satellite? Would hate to get all the way through the build and have the provider tell me the cable I wired is wrong

Needs to actually be RG6 and not RG59, then we just want it to be 3ghz rated, doesn't need to be quadshield.

Great video Matt - thanks! Why 4 RG6 for sat? I would have guessed 1 for the dish and 1 for redundancy?
@tymhomes
@tymhomes 6 жыл бұрын
Joe K depends how many receivers you’re going to use in a home, and as I understand it varies sat company to sat company. But 1 RG6 will support say 4 receivers, beyond 4 receivers you need upwards of 4 RG6. Not positive on numbers but you get the idea. So as cheap as RG6 is, its easiest to just run 4 and then you’re set.

building home now on my property. will probably use cable internet (spectrum) as we do in the current home, but there is fiber in the area, just not yet available where we are building. what would be the best practice to future proof my construction? Is fiber available to pre”wire” the home? Should I just do run to the Demarc point back to the homerun location? or would you recommend pulling a fiber to each of the areas I pull cat 6/ RG6? The builder is allowing me to do my own low voltage pulls during the construction process. Thanks.
@tymhomes
@tymhomes 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can get fiber to run inside the home, as well as run it with the Demarc. But if you don't run actual fiber, the wires we recommended for Demarc will prep you for most services offering Fiber. There's a chance if you call Spectrum they'll actually give you the wire to run as well. Hey Tym I'm getting a new construction build and getting everything prewired to be a smart home...my question is how much should i expect to spend on the brains of the home using a savant system for home audio, video distribution and automation?
@tymhomes
@tymhomes 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on scale, but Savant Host $6,000, Vid Distribution $1,000-1,500 per TV, Audio $800-1,200 per room including wire, speakers, amps and audio switch. There would be other cost, programming, Music Server, Wiring in the Media Rack. Likewise, there are options with Savant Host to buy a lifetime warranty, lifetime software renewal etc, so all those things effect totals, but this gives you some lose numbers to guesstimate. I'll to a video on it soon.

Looking at this video, and just breaking ground on my new home.....will I need to run 6 coaxial cables through my demarc total? I will be running cable internet, and satellite TV in my home. You mention 2 initially, then in the satellite pre-wire you have 4, do I need 6 total? Thanks in Advance!

Am late but honestly talking to your contractor, running one coax to each room is not a bad idea, gives options for you, and brings the price of the house up, also if your running cat 6 from the dmarc I would have it go to central location for the modem, then from there have a cat 6 line going to each room so it can plug into your router or network switch. I’m using a lot of big words, but hopefully it makes sense From demarc -Coax to every room, and 2 cat 6 to the room with the modem From room with modem - cat. 6 to every room for best internet results, gives you options for access points, plugging in ur office right to the router so no slow wifi issues, and plugging in TVs so Netflix doesn’t buffer, Goodlyck

I have dish tv and internet running together using some sort of splitter. I want to omit dish and just use my internet for entertainment. When I’ve canceled the Dishtv in the past I lose internet. I assume it’s due to this small egg sized splitter device. I’m not sure what I need to plug my Ethernet into to maintain my internet. I’m a medical nerd -not a tech nerd! We have this huge board that the original carrier (Direct tv) coiled and attached all the original wiring. I think nearly everything on that board is associated with direct tv except the small splitter device that we are now using with competitor Dishtv. We are so rural we have to use a coaxial cable (centurylink) for internet getting a whopping 1.7mgbs speed!! Hopefully new broadband is in our future this year. Definitely want to drop TV service as soon as that arrives but in the meantime… Is there another device I can use to detach the internet from dish and not lose internet in the process or can you tell me how/what to do to maintain internet separate from dish? Thank you!!!

Just a heads up with satellite you should run a messenger wire for grounding or the Satellite tech may refuse to use the wire and wrap the house anyway.

Donald Boughton yeah that’s interesting we’ve heard this but in markets where we’ve worked it’s never actually been an issue. Curious where you’ve seen it? We’ve already adjusted some of our written material to advise for this. Thx for the tip

How much do you charge for the different cables you run?
@tymhomes
@tymhomes 6 жыл бұрын
Normally we use a 'per drop' price that's $35-45 for most wire, and $60 for Cat6. Some homes with larger systems we offer a price per square foot, that's basically unlimited drops including fiber.

Wait so u need 2 coax cables 1 for internet and 1 for cable tv?
@tymhomes
@tymhomes 4 жыл бұрын
Alpha Ghost_316 - depends. If you are 100% certain you’re going to use cable internet, that the developer is bringing that into your neighborhood, etc you can just run 1 coax. But if you are unsure, or if you are planning internet, and satellite then you need 2 coax. Overtime, we’ve found it’s best practice to run 2 coax to demarc, if you run sat prewire then more there as well

Hey man. Are you running some kind of scam? I followed the link to your website and ended up ordering the Prewire and System Design Service. It has been 2 weeks and no one got back to me, even though I sent the floor plan. Also tried to email to get my money back, since I already have what I need. No response! Not cool man. Scamming people for money in a pandemic is not cool😠
