Gouldian Finches come in three distinct head color variations: black-headed, red-headed, and yellow-headed. But what determines which color a bird will have? Let's explore the genetics behind each head color:
𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: The black head coloration is the result of a dominant gene. This means that if a Gouldian Finch inherits the gene for black head color from either parent, it will display this phenotype.
𝗥𝗲𝗱-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: The redhead coloration is also determined by a dominant gene. Similar to black-headed birds, if a Gouldian Finch inherits the gene for red head color from either parent, it will exhibit this trait.
𝗬𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: The yellow head coloration is a bit different. It is caused by a recessive gene, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for yellow head color in order for their offspring to display this phenotype.
