Thanks Josh for this video. Man here in utah USA we never see nursery stock like this. So this perked my interest right back up. As of right now I'm at a cross roads of giving up or to start getting back what I once had. When my little brother passed away I've lost everything. That includes my absolute pride and joy, the sagebrush that's in my icon. Since then bonsai hasn't really felt the same.

This has really opened my eyes to juniper care and development. You are a great instructor. No wonder I have killed so many. I have acquired a juniper it is so pot bound it is roots and no soil. So even though it has a heavier trunk it doesn't appear to be very strong . How can I strengthen this tree? I'm rather lost.

@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Жыл бұрын
It's always good to teach beginners not to remove too much off a Juniper as doing that at the wrong time or with a tree that can't take it can be very bad. In this case I can use my experience and knowledge of the tree to go a little further safely. When teaching you have to some what teach with some safety nets, once the student has a little more experience then the boundaries of what can be done can be stretched.

Nice nursery tree! Massive trunk. I have people coming over thinking the trees look like crap too, but they can’t see the future in the tree. Early work doesn’t make the tree look like a good bonsai. But it’s ok, as long as I see the potential and goal. Question, when would you consider to repot a tree like you worked on?
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by repotting, this could be slip potting to a larger size container, potting up to refinement in a Bonsai pot, or taking a similar tree that's already in a Bonsai pot out to trim the roots and put it back in. The advise for these is all different. If you can clarify when can look at getting you thr right advice.
@murray821

@@BonsaiEn I mean to change the soil, as nursery plants often grow in pure peat.
@featherozone
@featherozone Жыл бұрын
@@murray821 in other videos bonsai-en often encourages organic based soils in development as this encourages lengthening and thickening of roots which mirrors as lengthening and thickening of branches. Changing soil happens when your goal goes from development to refinement, where you'd switch To a coarser, more inroganic soil to encourage finer growth in roots and therefore finer growth in the branches

Some do some dont, just depends on the variety. This particular species is a prostrate so it is a ground cover which is why it grows down naturally.

Hay Josh Great post as always. Can we have a price guide range or general idea for similar tree pre and post work. Would this go out for sale as is or would you look after it and let it fully recover before selling?
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Жыл бұрын
Before work the tree is worth around $300, after work it just depends on how much labour and materials went Into the tree. This particular tree will go back Into the growing area now ( away from sales tables ) to fill out and regain strength. It will get worked for a few seasons the potted up and sold as a proper Bonsai.
