I love that you started off the tips with being kind. I've seen videos of booktubers being completely rude when talking about the author just because they didn't like the book. It's uncomfortable and sad to see. Thanks so much for doing this video. I want to do reviews on my new channel and blog, and I was so confused on how to do so. Your video helped a lot. 😊

+Shutter Beat Reader Thank you! I think that there is always a way to be honest if you didn't like a book, but to also be kind and never attack the author personally.

+Books for MKs I agree with you. You can be constructive and express your opinion even if it is about something negative. It's also important to separate author and book. Being kind is something every should aspire to be.

My notes from the video: * even if book is terrible, look for 1 good thing that you liked * even if it was the most awesome book ever, find one point to criticize * authors background: incorporate the authors background into the review * no personal attacks on the author * POV: who is telling the story? * setting: what does the setting tell about the story? * genre: what is the genre? what would one expect from the genre? how does the book fit into the genre * theme: what is the theme? what is the book telling you? what does the author want get across? is there a definite message? * style: formal/informal? tone of the book * pacing: balance between action/tension & rest scenes/release * plot: what can be said about the plot (plot is the bones of the story)? what is this book all about? give a clue about the direction that the story is going in. is there a question posed at the beginning of the story? * character development: is there character development/growth * writing quality: > coherence: yes/no (did the writing make sense?) > clarity (was it easy to understand?) > concise (did it have lots of unnecessary details or did it have only the essential points for that story?) > originality (did the writing have its own voice/own tone/own style?) > forcefulness (was the writing passionate, did it get its message across? was it meaningful?) > development of ideas (were the ideas developed or were they started off and ended up as an tangent?) > fluidity (does the writing flow from sentence to sentence in a coherent way, from scene to scene, in a coherent way? * personal affect (how did this story/book affect you personally? your personal experience when you read the book) [try to pin down one word to describe your feeling when reading the book] look for a better words than “good/interesting/brilliant” for describing the book if possible

what I look for in a book is the quality of storytelling, even if I don't like the action or the descriptions, when a story is well told I stick around. For me, it has to do with the fluidity of the narration and also with a balance between action and psychological descriptions. Thank you very much for your video. Very clear and concise in your explanations and very honest about what you know about the topic.

I feel like the wildwood trilogy should be more hyped around booktube, it's so amazing, it actually changed my life and made me always want to have a book in my hand, I just hope the author of wildwood writes more books, he is such a talented authors that should be more well loved by the world, when I finished wildwood I was suprised it wasnt a classic, and that not many others had read it, I guess the size is intimidateing, but big books are always amazing, but they have so much to tell, and I usually fly through big books faster than little books.

My pet peeve is the editing so I make sure I write about it, good or bad. "bravo to the editor" "the editing is distracting and could have used more time" "the editing could use a last pass, but nothing to keep you from the flow of the story" Sometimes I'm really specific because it happened several times during the story such as "the 2nd author had problems making the difference between an adjective and an adverb (blatant/blatantly) and it was diverting the attention from the story". I love to review: POV, setting, pacing, character development, writing quality - where editing is also present here - development of ideas, fluidity, and personal effect. I tend not to write about the plot, the theme, and the setting because I don't want to give any spoilers. I hate when someone just rewrites whatever was at the back of the book - I see this as an infringement of copyrights - and/or gives spoilers "en masse"!

how do you identify the author's thesis? need this for my book review tysm :)
@LuminousLibro
@LuminousLibro 8 жыл бұрын
That depends on if you are looking for a "thesis" or a "theme" in the book. A thesis is a statement that has to be maintained or proved through examples or logic. A theme is an overarching subject or idea that reoccurs through many circumstances or instances. Themes are easier to find and are usually obvious. For instance, I just finished reading "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Ingalls family fight to survive through a harsh winter on the prairie, battling starvation and blizzards until their spirit is discouraged. But over and over, in different dialogue, actions, and attitudes, they assert that they will not let nature win. "Man triumphs over nature" is a theme of the book. Most fiction books have more than one theme. Another theme of "The Long Winter" is that the togetherness of family can be a powerful force. Another one is that cheerfulness in the face of disaster brings strength of mind and purpose to the heart. Thesis is tougher to discover, which is why most journals, essays, or papers with a thesis will state the thesis in the first few paragraphs to make it clear what they want to prove or disprove. This is more common in non-fiction. For instance, I am reading the non-fiction book "Changes that Heal" by Dr. Henry Cloud. In the first chapter he outlines his premise (thesis) and the four points which he intends to explain and prove in his book. He says, "I have identified four aspects of the personality of God, that, if we could cultivate them, would greatly improve our day-to-day functioning. 1. Bond with others. 2. Separate from others 3. Sort out issues of good and bad 4. Take charge as an adult." And the rest of the book is him proving his ideas are true and useful and how they should be applied. I hope this is helpful to you! Happy REading!

I use the same basic method for reviewing non-fiction books, with an added category for expertise and credibility, where I look for if the author is a credible expert in their field and seems knowledgeable about their subject. All the criteria for writing style still applies: concise, forceful, etc...
