In this video, I share with you how to write a competitive statement of purpose without having formal or traditional research experience. As you know, a PhD is a research degree, so it is imperative that you share about your research experiences and how those experiences have shaped your desire to pursue a PhD. If you do not have formal research experience, you need to use your experiences and speak about them through a research lens.

WHO AM I?
I am a Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni '16 and a current PhD student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego. I produce videos about the graduate school application and my journey through a PhD program. Subscribe to follow my journey through the PhD experience and to gain insight on how to best prepare for the graduate school application process.
I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.

This is awesome, Ivan. I am aiming for the Phd in Education at the HGSE and since I am already a High School English teacher, ESL English Lead with a background in marketing research, I have a lot to talk about my research experience. I would be glad if you could share tips on the perfect CV and things to keep in mind for those who possess a different degree, but have good relevant experience and want to pursue the Phd in Education at the HGSE.

What if you don’t hve a research experience in the field you want to work for…I have got work experience after my post gradation will my profile be eligible for MSc or PhD admissions?

You are still eligible, however, you might not be as competitive of an applicant. I would still mention your research experience and try to connect it to the new field you want to get into.
