May I just say that I have been waiting for instruction like this for at least 30 years? I have been struggling to learn the art of fugue and have been thinking about fugue since I was 10. Finding a teacher with an understanding and method of fugue like this has been impossible. And then you come along and make it look so easy. Your lovely presentation impressed me as much by its eloquence and technique, on so many levels, as it did with proof of my own delinquency. How you explained a perfect model and revealed at the end that it was a written by an accomplished musician of the practice period was pure gold. Before your reveal, I was bordering on extreme jealousy and quivering on hopelessness that I could never learn what was so apparent and easy for you. While I have a long way to go become proficient, I am inspired to try this interesting method. Thank you so much for your invaluable instruction and beautiful video.

That revelation at the end was very inspiring. It truly shows that masters of the past used these easy-to-understand tricks and techniques, and makes you feel that you can do it too. Thank you so much!

What a plot twist at the end! Thanks for making this small and easy to follow video. I'm new to composing counterpoint but I hope to be able to compose fugues one day. They are fascinating

Good teaching video! I know this piece, I have heard it once, but I didn't remember the composer. Right, I am remembering now, is it J. F. Fischer, a German organist, composer and teacher of composition at the end of the 17th. century. Thanks! Also the English speech is very good. It is not too fast. I am a German and it is still rather hard for myself to follow such speeches. There are many really very fine tutorials about music theory and historical composition, but many of them are at least a bit too fast, some are much too fast for me. it is not a problem with written texts but with oral speeches. I was not yet abroad for a long time so that I could learn the understanding of speeches. It would also already ecpected if you study abroad at an English-speaking country as a foreign student. it would been also too expensive for myself in spite of these exchanges programmes at the unis. The problem with the understanding of the language is especially a problem, if I am going to learn something about a new theme like counterpoint and the composition of fugues. Is it not such a problem if you have learnt something about an already threatened theme in former times, how it was with myself at harmonization. You can understand much from the comprehension, with your ears and eyes and your memory and remembrance and so on. Bur if you harmonize a melody, you get homophonic music. But I am going to learn something about polyphonic counterpoint with some independent voices. I have studied musicology in Berlin with an old German M. A. degree in 2001 but our theory teacher at the first semester has died because he got very ill and some lessons did not take place because of it. Other teachers tried to replace him then, but they had not always time for it. We have had four courses along the history of music from round 1200 until 1800. Time was too short to answer all my questions I had. Time passed after my exam and I did not stay at the university and started to do something else out of music later. I have forgotten so much meanwhile and I would like to get some answers on my questions about fugues, for example. Your spoken English is very clear and clearly to understand and not too fast. Thank you very much!

Absolutely stunning! I asked my self für literally 40 years how bach was able to improvise fuges - now I know it. He just "constructed" them. Thank you VERY MUCH!

The notion that writing a fugue could be fun and enjoyable like putting together a puzzle is completely foreign to me. My theory professor in college, never one to find an easy approach at the outset to introduce students to concepts they have no experience with, simply used J.S. Bach's sophisticated fugal writing fromThe Well Termpered Clavier as examples that we were to study and then emulate with fugue compostions of our own. For an 18 year old with SFB (shit-for-brains) syndrome this approach was about as productive as digging holes in the wet sand as the tide is coming in.

the fugue is in D minor not F major, embarassing that you try to teach others when you can't even get that right.
@Sam2951
@Sam2951 8 ай бұрын
It is in F major. The subject starts in the dominant and ends with a simple V-I, and the whole thing also ends with a F major chord (also the result of a V-I).

@@Sam2951 the home key of the piece is in D minor. It should have ended in D minor. It only immediately modulated to F.
