Your Personal Statement, or main essay, is your one big essay that's seen by all of the different colleges that you apply to (with a few exceptions). While your transcript and activities list tell the admissions committee "what you are" -- a good math student, a talented cello player, a community activist, etc. -- your personal statement is designed to tell them "who you are" -- what your core values are, what's in your heart, what's in your soul, and how you're a little bit different from everyone else who's applying. It's your single best chance to differentiate yourself from everyone else and get them excited about your candidacy.
