Many Clive Cussler novels use a prologue to introduce other elements of the story - typically a long past event, relic, or society that plays into the schemes of the bad guys, or how the hero defeats the bad guys in the end. It's a little different than Jessica's use, but adds intrigue at the beginning of the story, along with some context about the devices or schemes of the bad guys. Might not work in every genre, but works well in his action/adventure novels.

Well, the way I'm choosing to use the prologue as an opening image is to take an otherwise important scene that happens before the first chapter and drop it right up front as a mini-catalyst, but hints at what's to come in the catalyst, and also jump back in time to introduce the concept of what's it about. A “double whammy” two scenes laid on top of each other serving the same function of a single scene hitting the same beats. A great example of this you can find is in Catching Fire. In chapter 2, we get a glimpse of the previous Games hinted throughout chapter 1 and 2, with Katniss finally hitting a key scene in meeting President Snow, only to be triggered by a traumatic flashback of what happened earlier before resuming the present to introduce the hunger games to new readers of the 2nd book. Similar concept, different layout, but they serve the same function to cement the idea of the main concept very effectively.

Reading Save The Cat Writes A Novel. and I’m also working on a prologue that weaves into my story, it’s crazy that this was uploaded on the same day that I’m having issues and questions about how to structure the scene in the book I’m working on. Hugely helpful, thanks for all the writing advice.
