How I Use Overleaf for Academic Writing for Scientific Journal and Conference Articles
I've been using Overleaf for 3 years now for all of my academic writing needs and I cannot imagine using anything else or ever going back to a word processor. The main reason I love Overleaf is that it makes formatting the document so quick and easy!

There is nothing especially wrong with using Microsoft Word for academic writing, for many it is an application that they are comfortable using. However, it is fair to say that the majority of Word users are not using it well. If you use styles for all of your formatting, then you just alter your styles to change the appearance of the entire document. You can also use templates, it starts to become more problematic when users deviate from that (and it is very tempting to fall into bad habits with Word). LaTeX is great for keeping things disciplined. It forces you into doing things "right" and that is it's greatest strength IMHO If you are not using LaTeX, then yes it's a great tool for writing, but it takes some learning. Word needs learning too though. You also have to consider other factors such as what application is your supervisor/s using? The tool you choose needs to be accessible to everyone who is collaborating with you. Whist LaTeX is widely used within the University that I work in, it is nowhere near Word for popularity. If you are working within specific disciplines such as computing science, engineering, physics etc. It is very popular and your supervisor will probably be steering you towards it. If you are working within some social sciences for instance there is a strong possibility your supervisor wont have heard of it. But don't be put off Word. It's collaboration tools are excellent especially if you are using OneDrive too. If you combine a referencing add in such as EndNote, Zotero or Mendeley I think the referencing is slightly easier. But... training is the key with Word. If it feels like it's hard work, you are almost certainly not using it well.

Great video, Ciara. I won't lie - Overleaf/Latex still intimidates me, but I am currently working on a large document in Word and can already see the limitations related to this. I think I might explore Latex in the summer, when I have more time! I'll definitely be coming back to this video when I do!

This was really helpful. Trying to figure out how it could work into my workflow. Right now I use primarily Obsidian for research and Word (my PI is old school). Not sure how to incorporate Overleaf into the workflow but I will definitely think about it!

Wonderful and informative video, thank you! I've recently started working with Scrivener and find it very useful for structuring large amounts of text and keeping things organized. Have you tried it? I will definitely consider using Overleaf to process and format the text and get a nice looking final result.

I am using Latex for the last twenty years, if not more. My problem is as follows: Most often in a PhD thesis we have to write a preface wherein some significant theorems from the main body of the thesis are needed to be restated. The amstools or thm-restate package does not help us in this regard. In this package the restated theorem must appear after the original theorem in the thesis. Till date we are doinng it manually. But then the problem is if we change something in the original theorem then the same change must be done in the restated theorem manually. Can you do something in this matter?

I often use LaTex (TexPad) and R-Markdown, however, I much prefer R-Markdown over LaTex because it drastically speeds up and improves my workflow given that my statistical models are typically performed in R. :)

Isn't it worth mentioning what functionality is a paid feature? For example, track changes is a paid function and there's no other way round it. The History is also only valid for 24 hours, though you can use this free if you refer 6 others.
