Learn how to write a sonnet. Topics include rhyme schemes for Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnets, iambic pentameter, and the appropriate subject matter for a sonnet. I'm a high school English teacher near Seattle. If you have comments or corrections, I'd love to hear 'em.
And just so you know, all of this content, including my ridiculously bad sample lines, like "Dog, you make me grab your steaming poop / my hand encased in plastic shopping bags," are all copyrighted (believe it or not). Please make up your own; you can definitely do better than cats eating casserole and cake.

Thank you mister Sato for this guide This video was so useful to me I hope this reaches people far and wide And I sure hope that they will all agree That your explanation is great, no doubt We're writing better sonnets thanks to you We could not have done all of this without Your well-structured advice and that is true! And in the volta I shall let you know This is the first time I write a sonnet Give me a little while to practice though And in no time im sure ill be on it! I honestly think that this is so cool Much better than the stuff you learn in school! (As a sidenote this is indeed my first sonnet so if anyone notices any mistakes in the rhythm or anything along those lines please let me know!)

Your sonnet should add more punctuation marks (could be a comma every each line). It tells the speaker when to stop or pause, creating a rhythm.

At first, I was completely confused as I missed the day when we took notes in class for this certain poem, but since I looked at your video, it helped me to understand how to write a Shakespearean Sonnet :D Thanks!

Love's the separation and the oneness, From this world and to His benevol’nce. Love's the wine and you are the drunkenness, Get drunk, and be His lover with patience. He is nowhere, yet He is in ev’rything, Open th’ inner eye, an’ behold His pure Love. Feel the Love ; praise, adore and gladly sing. And spread your invisible wings, O Dove ! O Lov’r ! You are the mind, He’s the Reason. O Lov’r ! You are the face, He’s the Beauty. O Lov’r ! You are the bloom, He’s the Season. O Lov’r ! You are the might, He's the Mighty. Place th’ hand on the heart and feel the rhythm. That's where His abode is, go and call Him. The theme is based on Sufism. I wrote this after reading Rumi.

My first sonnet. This song,my love, still cheers my gloomy heart In days of utter loneliness and gives Me strength to seek a haven safe,to flee and start A life, away from deadly past.It lives In memory and sighs in vain, forlorn! The lyrics leave a deep imprint on me And sends my lonely heart to you. I scorn The sudden adieu I bid to thee, And made my soul suffer in turn.It sings Of dreamy vows we made,in love, and gets Those moments back to me.It sings and stings My feeble heart.why adieu in behest? Oh, love! Your pretty name shall always shine Whenever I sit to pen lovely rhyme!

I like your video. I also like the band My Chemical Romance and their use of iambic writing. It isn't pentameter but I think it gives insight into accented and unaccented syllables. Some of their lyrics are: "Are you near me? Can you hear me?Can we pretend to leave and then we'll meet again when both our cars collide? These particular lyrics are performed as a prayer at the funeral and the ballerina dances one last time until the prayer is over and everyone opens their eyes. Other famous songs like "I'm not Okay" use iambic as well. "Well if you wanted honesty, that's all you had to say!" I'm not okay. etc. Then there is a part where he breaks cadence and sounds like Ophelia's manic madness and transitions back into cadence with a whispered, "trust me" Writing is a coping mechanism and sonnets are songs. So practicing writing is a cathartic exercise. It is also attractive because if a guy is self conscious about making a move on a date it is way easier if he writes the girl a sonnet about making a move then punctuates the conclusion of the poem with action as if checking her reading comprehension. Or the girl can perform a well executed poem and capture everyone's sympathy and endearment. Or if you want to impress a stranger on Okay Cupid writing a sonnet about their specific themes and words will instantly give a response and shoot you to the top of their list especially if they like authors who use poetry like Shakespeare or Edgar Allan Poe.

mistersato411 for my lit class we have to write a pop sonnet based on a previous song we chose. My song is Liability by Lorde and we have to write it using Shakespearean Elizabethan language.

Try to look at the lyrics without hearing the music because singers add their own rhythm and emphasis that isn't necessarily present in the words themselves. They SAY, YOU'RE a LITtle MUCH for ME YOU'RE a LI-a-BIL-i-TY. Good luck with your assignment! It sounds challenging!

Must the rhyme scheme in a quatrain (first 4 that is) be ABAB or can it be AAAA?

It might be a great poem, but it wouldn't be a sonnet.

I wouldn't say that sonnets were always made to praise someone, weren't the first 15 sonnets or so made to encourage people to have children?

I'd never heard that before. My source text didn't mention it.

@@mistersato411 May just be me misinterpreting the sonnets ( I am not a native speaker of english), though the sonnets do praise the subject they put more weight on encouraging him to make children
