Could you go into depth on creating a synthwave drum loop from scratch? I love that sound you had on the drums but not sure what effects were used on it.

The drums are the one part I left untouched and didn't design myself. It's a loop from Varien's Netrunner sample library

@@UltimaRedFireEskimo 80s drums are all about sidechained reverb (google 80s gated snare). Also drums on the sample are very compressed and he layered them with that reversed "high pitch sound"

@@UltimaRedFireEskimo For the Kick just use a standard dry synthetic kick. And the Snare is just a splashy snare with reverb and noise gate.

PS: Maybe one idea for improvement (since I compose and love Synthwave for a while now). The rhythmic feel of the chopped vocals and side-chain compression are very nice for a limited time, but at least I usually get annoyed by this kind of over-rhythmic stuff. To reduce this effect, one can overlay it by e.g. a bass or pad track (something with long notes) which prolongs this short sounds. So the volume doesn't reduce to 0 in the gaps (giving it this "on" and "off" feel), but something that is stays for the whole period but is extremely rhythmic. You added a very long reverb, but this is vanished by the side-chain-compression. Maybe, the side-chain-settings are a bit too extreme. You could probably fix this by turning the dry-wet-knob to 90%, if available. BUT, for not being an artist who composes Synthwave all the time --- WTF? You just matched the sound and feeling of the genre!

It's cool and all but i was expecting something that didn't rely too heavily on sample packs. Thought it'd be something from scratch that has some effect recommendations. I.E. which type of effects to use and what might be a good start for a Electronic Drum kit and instrumentation. But it's cool nonetheless

I love the result, but this is not a minute job, unless you basically cut out all instructions on how to actually complete each step. Would you consider a follow-up in depth tutorial? I'd love to know how you set up the sidechain(s), what a ghost kick is (I can guess, but it doesn't tell me much about what I need to do) or how you chop up the vocal sample.

Gate (or specifically trance gate given the application). Also called step-sequenced gate. Can also be applied with LFOTool or something like MRhythmizer.
