I like that the focus is on a narrative. It doesn't matter that you may have not gone to college and nearly failed out of high school, you have a story to convey. You have skills and attributes to convey and your resume should do this. This is by far the best and most comprehensive video I've seen on the subject of writing resumes.

Ramit...this is spot-on. My take-away is this...people do not want to be sold to...they want to be told a story, they want to be entertained, they want to gain some insight and maybe inspiration from. You try and sell someone they will reject you. If you, instead, entertain them via narrative they will enjoy it. They will remember it. Storytelling comes in many forms...and...our resume is just one of them. Thanks man...and your call to action at the end was seamless...you gave us something before you asked for something. Simon Sinek says "people dont buy what you do, they buy why you do what you do". They dont buy features and functions...make them feel something. That is what story does.

Learning to write concisely is a tough skill to learn! It's so much easier to just write out everything and it's what most of us do... "The things you take for granted are actually fascinating to other people". THIS IS GOLDEN. Once you realize this the possibilities are endless! This is the first video of yours I've watched and I'll definitely be watching more.

Susmitharoy Vatturi that's not the point. The point is that you want to craft a narrative. You want to paint a picture of yourself and who you are. Yes you might now have great achievements, but you have to work with what you got to paint a picture of you are. :)

What if you do not have anything? How do you build a great resume with no education and most work experience being from jobs like retail and delivering?
@arbenkqiku8880
@arbenkqiku8880 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I think in order to write a great resume you first need a great curriculum. I organised two events for a couple of associations, participated at a couple of research projects, developed a website for a client by using Wordpress, etc. All these opportunities where from people who did not have many funds to pay me but where willing to accept my services because they were unable to afford a professional. They relied on me and I paid back their trust. Now I have relevant work experience. There are many associations willing to give you responsibilities in exchange of free work. I know, you would like to paid, and that is perfectly understandable. But in the current job market you may have to be willing to gain relevant work experience in order to land a good job. Next week I am having an interview with an important firm and that would be my dream job. Wish me luck! :)

Karina, you can craft a resume highlighting your excellent customer service skills, ability to meet sales goals, delivering on time, going the extra mile for a customer. Think bigger about who YOU are and don't limit yourself to your job title. To quantify, think of how many people you served in a day or a week in retail, or how many packages you delivered. Did you win any awards, employee of the month, etc.. ?
@IsmaelChamu
@IsmaelChamu 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Karina! I've worked with some recruiters and many times they would point out that they wished retail folks did not undersell themselves. As stated by someone else point out the number of people you worked with/ served/ number of deliveries. Accomplishments? Are you detail oriented and focused on the proper function of a small business or store? Feel free to reach out to me!

I agree with you a little, but some places the hiring manager isn't there, ive done that. I went into verzion seeing how I can get a job there, they said apply online. Cool if they see you in person, but if your experience on your resume and application dont match how you act, your just making yourself look like a fool.

I make my living by writing, and even though this video is geared to producing a great resume, the advice is probably the best I've heard or seen anywhere for writing in general. Every word has to earn its place in what you write, even if its just a text message.
@roobahfox2815
@roobahfox2815 9 жыл бұрын
I had a psychology professor (not at Stanford) who taught me more about writing than any one ever. He had us write a weekly research paper review, then had us go back and rewrite the same review to one page. Then after everyone failed miserably like you described, he made us go back and rewrite the same review into 100 words or less. After the first few weeks, he made us do a one-page review on following writings every week, and a follow-up rewriting the previous week's writings down to 100 words. Result: Do that for an entire semester = strong ability to write a summary statement on a research paper. So I'm not demonstrating that skill here, but in a pinch, I can make anything fit a tweet and when I get desperate and NEED to say more, I cut it down to a tiny URL.

Very helpful, not only to just sell a resume. As long as you have a store of experiences to draw from you can craft your desired impression by choosing a narrative. "If you don't like the story you're in, leave". If you don't like the story you're in, (or life, or resume you have), then choose to tell a new one. Example: (example of a realistic event) 1. (Simple and realistic) A ceramic mug in the shape of a fox falls off a table after being bumped and spills water onto pink carpet. 2. (Creative and dynamic, with a crafted narrative) A ceramic mug, crafted in the shape of a sleeping fox, rests atop a table. A sudden force to the table tips the fox forward, sending it off the table and onto the floor. Crystalline drops cascade onto the carpet, spilling into and over each other, capturing in clusters on feathered hairs of lightly pink carpet. The fox's broken tail (her handle) rests beside her closed eyes. On her cheek, a wet tear glistens. Where the first option is fairly concrete, and relatively obvious, the second version takes a unique way of seeing the obvious, captures an underlying narrative and crafts a story to make the reader feel a certain way. I wrote this "narrative" with the idea of impressing on the reader a story relating to my favorite mug and that it almost has a personality, paired with the idea that the idea that beauty is fleeting. I captured the ephemeral beauty of the water on feathered floor, and drew from an experience as a child when I'd seen a young fox sleeping on feathered ferns in the forest. For creative twist/flair I added the tear and broken tail, reinforcing the ephemeral (and sadness) that comes with losing a great friend. I can come back and edit this "story" to more clearly show this narrative, but for purpose's sake I would like to say: Personify your resume. Is there a story you want to tell about yourself? We are often the stories we tell ourselves, but we can change who we are simply by the attitudes we tell ourselves (and others). What story is that? Tell it. Also: all of these things I am mentioning here Ramit kindly points out in his video. (*Note: Hard work is involved. If you're not willing to take the time and spend the effort to craft a story that makes you feel like the person you always wanted to be (or make others feel a certain way) then you might need to work a little harder or shift your focus to listen to that story you want to be told about you in order to get that dream job, or job in your mind. Only you can tell that story. Feel like you can't write a good enough resume because of a lack of experience? Find your story first, or some aspect of a story you wish to tell about yourself, and do little things that strengthen that story you want to tell (other jobs, favor for a friend, volunteer experience, online blogging, etc.). The more you do, the more you will amass experience necessary to craft a hard-earned resume. (Take a good look at your life and past experiences, including and excluding jobs, and you may be able to find a truth that you want to tell.) P.S. If you came this far, you have everything you need to craft your powerful resume (and/or story)!

This is a great help. Thanks. One thing to consider, is your "narrative" style works for a human reader. But many recruiters use software to sort through resumes now, then the recruiter gets the ones the software sorted to the top. Not a human connection this narrative style is meant for. Thoughts anyone?

"Viral growth? What is that? Seems interesting? I better give this guy a call!" ...Hate to break it to you, but even though it sounds like it could be a very beautiful sound to include the word viral, and no other option could replace it, be real for a second. I see people all of the time use terms that sound great, but don't actually pop out to those who understand what those words mean. It's like saying you get organic ad exposure on KZfaq. I think Ramit, you may have spent so much time on this resume like you said, but developed tunnel vision as the end result. What I am trying to conclude with, is to always have someone proofread and critique your resume. Especially when your next opportunity depends on someone reading and critiquing it. Aside from that, thank you Ramit. You answered a lot of my questions, and taught me valuable information as I write my resume today for an in-company internship. Best of luck to you all who are writing one as well!

You entered a marketplace, and used given frameworks laiden before you to advance yourself into your current position. Highlighting only positives, and no such thing as a negative experience endured. You are selling yourself to an institution, and must convey to them that not only are you able to enter their place, but also advance the agendas, benchmarks, and quotas. Frameworks, evolving, and your ability to achieve these things due to he nature of greatness, and the fact that you are willing to shovel shit if needed in order to move forward. I know your comment was a year ago, but it got me thinking.

In other words, you should exaggerate your experience. I know it’s not fun, but hey, employers clearly prefer seduction to facts these days.
