Short and sweet. I don't think Pat Pattison has ever had anything remotely close to a hit song. That doesn't mean it can't work, but it would be good to find out how many successful songwriters have used this technique.

The word of the day is "Danger", but how would I do an object writing exercise about "Danger" when it's not exactly an object? ... like..where do I begin?!?
@OfficialNnoa
@OfficialNnoa Жыл бұрын
Don‘t worry too much about whether it‘s an object or not. What is danger for you? How does it feel to be in danger? Can it feel good? Or bad? How do you react when you feel in danger? How to you get out of that feeling? What comes next? Start to answer some questions like those above & within writing you‘ll realize that your thoughts might lead you to a complete way of thinking about danger. or maybe you write stuff that is not related to anger at all… or maybe it is? ;)

This is perfect! Thank you so much for your reply. So it's okay if it leads into something like, feeling danger about where a relationship is going for example? (emotional danger type of thing)
@OfficialNnoa
@OfficialNnoa Жыл бұрын
@@Tyler-ko8dp that's maybe pretty unsatisfying but: everything is okay as long as it works for you! this method is a tool that could get you somewhere, but it's not necessarily bond to those rules mentioned in the video :) I e.g. prefer to write 5-10 minutes without any "rules", but when I get stuck or don't like my ideas, I try tools like object writing to enlarge my subconsciousness :)

@@OfficialNnoa I love your music btw, just checking it out now. The trouble I have as a writer, is I love my instrumentals, but then when it comes to lyrics and rhythm of those lyrics, I struggle so much. I always have a good "Theme" or general topic to begin with, but when I try to expand on that, I struggle with creating direction. Like the verses end up sounding like random lines thrown together, and I can never get anything catchy enough for the hook/chorus especially. When I search online, I see a lot of "come up with something simple" and "it has to be memorable" but like, I always try to do that and it just ends up sounding amateur. Maybe it's like WHERE I'm actually placing the words within the chorus, or maybe the pitches, I'm not sure
@OfficialNnoa
@OfficialNnoa Жыл бұрын
@@Tyler-ko8dp ooh thanks a lot! :) i totally get that struggle. honestly, songwriting does not necessarily need to be something you do all by yourself. maybe you should try to involve another person, or even two and write together. it's so so cool to observe how others work, how others deal with these little challenges, how they inspire you and the other way round. this can be reaaally relieving. I always thought "i should be able to do all this by myself" - I'd say that's simply wrong. get out there and some inspiration :) and suddenly everything might turn out to be easier than ever thought

I like how you presented this but I don’t like this Pat’s “object writing” s senses principle. Things that move me truly are not coming from the senses: someone’s gesture of elegance, the subtle grace in someone’s attitude, the breathless selflessness of someone’s act, without mentioning affection, etc. And all these I would articulate through poetic metaphors, not through “senses”… like the afternoon sun shattering the school window to thousand pieces in a summer afternoon when all your friends were worlds away on vacations but you stood alone there where once you played…etc. Everyone sites this exercise and I find it extremely sterile because of this pretentious “senses” concept. I remember a book for lyric writing by a lady, and there she gave an example of bad lyrics and they started with exactly senses, like li was hungry, felt my stomach…bla bla…” She said, if you want strong lyric do not dwell on your physiology … How concise lol😛
