How to write films about groups, ensembles, multiple protagonists. An introduction

Many film scripts are about groups of people - a family, a gang, a club, a collection of old friends, a platoon of soldiers, a crowd of prisoners, a small town community, performers putting on a show - and many more. They have multiple protagonists, not just a single hero, Hollywood style. These films can be excellent, but they are hard to construct and the Hollywood one-hero model doesn't explain them. How can you avoid characters in search of a plot? Linda Aronson explains in a Quick Bite video

I've written a parallel narrative screenplay with dual protagonists (higher level and lower level), and first level industry readers are not grasping it because they've never seen it before, and their minds are locked into a single protag mindset. Utterly frustrating, because the story structure I feel is incredibly unique and next level.

Maybe check out my book The 21st Century Screenplay to see if that helps. It might also help you with a polish if you need it. You can also refer people to the book. I've known writers to do that.

How the actor acts and how he's written are completely two seperate things people heavily mix between both

Interesting. It's always important to write so as to let the actor interpret and bring their own unique interpretation to the script.

You can also go to my website www.lindaaronson.com There are a lot of tips on that site (don't forget to look in the Blog Post archive as well as 'Which Structure Suits my Story' etc. On the website, you can also subscribe to my craft skills newsletter. All of that material will help, but multiple protagonist structures are complex and can't be properly explained in videos or website posts. There are no short cuts to this sort of thing I'm afraid.
