I am struggling with this right now. A musician friend recently sent me a beautiful track--complete with melody, harmony, and rhythm--and asked me to write the lyrics. I am so accustomed to writing lyrics FIRST that writing them LAST feels totally unnatural. Currently scouring your channel for more of these music-first types of videos...

My recommendation is to first capture the tone and emotion of the song to figure more or less what it is about. Then I think it's helpful to start writing lyrics that are just CLOSE to the right amount of syllables rather than forcing yourself to write a 6 syllable line right from the start. If lines are like 8 notes, write lyrics that are somewhere in the 5-11 syllable range- you can worry about tightening the lyrics up to the melody at a later stage
