Use the hm-2 to add a second layer for your guitar, in a seperate chain Turn it down a bit It will keep your sound defined, but adds a little filth

The HM-2 was more early Amon Amarth/In Flames , the Dual Rec sounded a lot like All Shall Perish. I'd personally go with that dualrec as well.

The metalcore drums over the riff still sounded like melodic death metal lol I don't think the drums make too much of a difference, it's the entire composition, feel, and attitude of the song.

Yeah the thing is since we didn't have the physical pedal we couldn't really change the parameters on the QC Capture we were using, so we ultimately decided to just scrap that idea

To write melodic death metal you'll have to learn the min-pentatonic scale, guitar harmonies, diminished scale, harmonic minor scale sweeping, tapping, and some hard rock/melodic British heavy metal. The drums aren't as hard as some other extreme metal styles, blast beats are usually slowed down or not used, but a drummer will need a bassy sound, a great sense of rhythm, and be good at drum fills. The bass isn't required to do much other than follow the rhythm guitar. The vocalist will need to sound black metal/death metal. Keyboards are an option but they usually only play singular notes and just add atmosphere. Good bands to take notes from: At the Gates, Insomnium, Intestine Baalism, Amorphis (early albums), Death, Entombed, Carcass, Dark Tranquility, Belakor, Dismember, Eucharist, In Flames (early albums), Edge of Sanity, Cenotaph, Unanimated, Dissection, Sacramentum, Vinterland, Amon Amarth, Kalmah, Omnium Gatherum, Mors Principum Est, Nightrage, Opeth, Wintersun, Ensiferum, Norther, Gates of Ishtar, Sacrilege, Inferi, Arghoslent, Unleashed, Children of Bodom

Hate this kind of "melodic death metal". Wouldn't even call it such. Children of Bodom, Kalmah, and a lot of Dan Swano's work is what Icd consider actual melodic death metal.
