Learn how to write realistic drum fills from Periphery's Misha Mansoor in this tutorial, using Modern & Massive from Getgood Drums.
In this tutorial he covers the most important concepts of writing drum fills in any type of rock or metal: how to create tension and release, how to fill a gap, transitioning between parts, and writing fills that are realistic in terms of what a human drummer could and would likely play.
Misha demonstrates how to write drum fills in Cubase (his DAW of choice) using the Modern & Massive library from Getgood Drums. The details of how to program the MIDI notes and velocities may be different in other DAWs, but the important part is to take note of the concepts, which you can translate into any DAW.

I'll go a step further and say that I've benefited massively from watching drummer tutorials. It teaches you how to think like a drummer, even if you aren't one at heart.

Yes same here. I have a few projects in motion and I've been watching tutorials, mainly of Gavin Harrison. He's an amazing drummer. But it's helped me think like a drummer, because im a guitar player.

Agree. One will need 9 drummer tutorial and 1 (Outta 10) tut related to working with software to be effectively able to program one.

Misha, I just want to say personally thank you, because your videos on drum programming started me on my songwriting journey. 4 years ago, when you did those Programming Tips videos for Top Secret Audio, and the way you showcased Cubase and the drum editor, it really opened up my eyes on how easy it can be to make drum tracks. I had no idea before. Now, some years later after seeing those videos, I have completed two full albums, and it's all thanks to those initial building blocks that you provided. Without that, I would have struggled to get started and not knowing how to create a proper rhythm sections from scratch, and not relying on stock drum fills and grooves. So thanks again.

More drummers need to learn this. I program all of my stuff in Guitar Pro. When a drummer programs correctly and knows which hands play what, you could adjust the intensities accurately, so your midi could sound as real as possible. Example, my left hand for my snare hits harder than my right. Everywhere else, my right hand hits harder. Knowing those little details will help boost the uniqueness of your music. Great work, GGD.

Hell yeah Gotta think of what just the four limbs can do I watched a bunch of drum fill tutorials and programmed the on screen drum tabs into a beats template in my DAW to drag and drop - I save them to drag and drop at the end of certain sections of my songs. Presonus Studio One has a cool humanize feature that staggers the beats and adjusts the velocities of the hits... I like to adjust velocities as I lay notes down, but yeah- it gets pretty cool. I copied all of 66Samus’ drum beat examples into a template file too, to drag and drop for songs Pretty awesome stuff LETS SEE IF I LEARN ANYTHING NEW HERE

Hi, I have a question about GGD Modern&Massive pack. When I use cymbals, in playback the same one cymbal plays differently with volume varying from normal to barely heard. I suppose this is for creating a natural feeling but for my purposes I need less variety. But I did not find how to setup it. Is it possible?

I always liked fills to be transition cues for the listener. At least where the big ones are concerned. Smaller fills that only accent certain things with the rest of the band just adds scenery to the drive. So you don't feel like your driving through Kansas or Southeastern Wyoming.

considering Misha has his own Tone Forge amp sim through JST. i HIGHLY doubt they are targeting any of JST's consumers at all man. thats just ridiculas to even say. i will how ever agree that Misha is one hell of a marketing salesman and on that note who cares that he is constantly promoting everything he is involved with when he doesnt make enough money to live off of from periphery alone.

I didn't mean they're targeting DF's customers, just that they're kinda following their track, expanding from just samples to full on plugins. That might mean we'll get a standalone GGD plugin at some point as well :)

Keep in mind which drums are closer to each other as well, you don't want your drummer trying to reach all the way across the kit in a 32nd note's time and then back again or anything. We're people, not machines :)

Why do programmed ride cymbals never sound realistic? Don't get me wrong, GGD are my fave because they sound the most thicc, yet natural. But no matter the vst, I've always struggled with making ride cymbal hits sound realistic despite toying with timing and velocity. Any tips on this?
@crimsun7186
@crimsun7186 5 жыл бұрын
No drum sampler is able to simulate cymbal wash properly, as that's impossible with one shot samples. Simply alternating samples every once in a while is not enough.

@@crimsun7186 Yeah exactly, man. But even the transient sounds always sounds kinda off and I can't put my finger on it
@crimsun7186
@crimsun7186 5 жыл бұрын
That's because what makes a cymbal sound like a cymbal is lacking and cannot be captured with one shot samples. And this goes for every cymbal, not just rides.
