I bought a sketch book a while back and wanted to write with a quill in it. It’s a leather bound book with weathered looking pages. Been studying different magicks for a project I am working on and wanted the copy down the Book of Shadows. Also wanted this to help with an invisible ink that I made. Appreciate that people still show the old ways of doing things.

@@kristen3715 I actually did not too long back. Having to constantly dip my pin and carefully remove excess from the back of the tip to prevent blotches got annoying. Definitely worth the price, though the dip pen makes a better display piece.

A follow along, practice video of your alphabet would be awesome! I would definitely use that as a resource. Maybe a history of the mail/courier system of the F&I or Rev War period? I'm trying to build an impression of a British military clerk on campaign and the items they would have with them and the method of sending and distribution of letters on the march. Thanks for sharing your passion.

I believe the reason there is a left and right difference isn't because of the writing; it purely comes with the actual feather part. For left-handed writers, the plumage of the right-handed quills will obscure your vision and vice versa.

@calliehershey1782 Жыл бұрын
The fletching was usually stripped off nearly or completely. The drag it makes through the air, and the visual obscuring is why. If you look at old paintings, you'll see just an inch or so of feather left at the top, sometimes none.

Practice makes perfect! Sometimes some papers do better with certain inks, other ink and papers not so good. So I would advise practicing to find the best combination first and then it takes a lot of the headache away later so you can get to the fun stuff quicker.

I already use a fountain pen regularly and I am very eager to learn the quill and this method so I can send letters in this style to my friends and family. I have printed out the round hand/Italian page you link to, for a guide. But it really helps to see the pen moving and constructing the letters. Could you show us how you write sentences? Thank you!

I just purchased the quill pen and I am so excited to get started. When you make your video on further coaching on round hand handwriting as I requested in my previous comment, could you please also talk about care for the quill pen? I live in a desert climate and when I use a regular fountain pen, I have to dip it in water frequently during my project as the ink in the nib dries so fast. I don't want my quill pen to clog up and become unusable. I would like to know how to preserve and extend the life of the pen. Thank you.

Love the quill, it just arrived from you guys today! Should I use a slightly thicker ink when writing, I've been a fountain pen writer for a while and have used FP ink with it, but it loses ink a quarter of the way into a word. I've seen people use slanted tables to write, is this a necessity or is the FP ink just too wet?
@pumpkintown
@pumpkintown Жыл бұрын
I might suggest slightly thinner ink. And yes the ink needs redipping much more often than a fountain pen or steel nib. Experiment with papers, inks and just barely touch the paper.

I had a year which sidelined much, but i am finally working on my quill pen writing. I learned script in the 1950s in school, so my writing is fairly fancy for today's standards. Per your advice I am just using my regular writing for now, and i will tackle round hand after I master the quill. My problem now is my writing looks globby. I am focusing on light touch, but it's a challenge and I am having to dip the pen often. So, the writing starts out thick, then rapidly thins after 3 or so letters. Should the pen make a scratching sound, or is that due to too heavy a pressure? Any advice?
@pumpkintown
@pumpkintown Жыл бұрын
Then pen will always make scratchy sounds. Do you have one of our quills? Experiment with different ink and different paper. The quill, ink and paper we sell all work well together. Great question.
@ivorybow
@ivorybow Жыл бұрын
@@pumpkintown Yes, both my quill and my paper came from your store. I bought a goose quill. It tries to turn over sideways in my hand. And so I'm having to focus and use a bit of muscle force to keep it from turning sideways. I realize this is something that is going to take many hours. However I've watched you and other videos write with a quill and I don't see this globby writing, plus I see that a dip can last for several words. I have to dip my pen about every 3 or 4 letters. I will take your advice and order some of your ink.

If you want to study some REALLY OLD Cursive, look into "Roman Cursive" . After a little study & practice you'll actually be able to make out the various letters and words. Some fun facts- Roman Cursive was developed so you could quickly write on wax tablets or scratch graffiti on walls. It lacked Curls and Loops which came later, when writing on Parchment and Papyrus became more common. Like modern Cursive, it also evolved over time & location used. For example, at times, the Letters- E, N, & M were written as 'II, III, & IIII" respectively !

@pumpkintown
@pumpkintown Жыл бұрын
@@diegomarquez3293 I dont have a source for uncut quills. Many people who try to write with a quill they cut for the first time give up because the correct cut and tempering is so crucial. It isnt just as simple as whittling the end of a feather. The quillls you buy at the gift shops are almost always a poor quality. These are professionally cut and tempered and have given me over a year of use per quill. This is the same principle as "you get what you pay for". Thanks for the question!
