Lace knit patterns require yarn overs to create eyelets or openings.
The technique of yarnovers differs between Continental and English Knitting. The reason is because of the way the yarn is held and handled.
When you yarn over, you're essentially creating a new stitch but also the eyelet. To keep your stitch, count correct, working 2 sts together precedes or follows a yarn over.
In English knitting, yarnovers are created differently:
♥ Yarn overs between knit stitches are referred to as 'yarn forward' (yfwd);
♥ between purl stitches, yarn round needle (yrn);
♥ yarn over between purl and knit stitches, is named yarn over needle (yon) and
♥ yarn over between knit and purl stitches are called yarn forward, followed by yarn round needle (yfwd, yrn).
