ANY tank is just a metal tin, that you will find there is a very large chance of dying inside, though the dying part are different levels depending on the tank, but then lets just say at least a very big chance you will be walking on the battlefield soon. So you should use these right, which i think today, sans air cover, you do not want to get near action without artillery peppering positions in front of it. CUZ you do not want to be engaging fortified AT positions and artillery, so those guys have to be forced into their holes so its just tank on tank, where it should be no problem. First batch of Danish L1A5 tanks arrived in Ukraine today, many - many more to come.

I would expect that the bag charges (filled with cordite) burnt off inside. These would not explode, due to storage, as Russian tanks do but would rather have burnt like a massive blow torch. Any tank is just a tank. We shouldn't overestimate what they can do, given the circumstances there, and not underestimate what the Russians have to fight them. For the crew, I rather would sit in a Challenger or Leopard when hitting a mine, or being shelled, than in a T-72. For sure! After all these analyses, how useful western tanks are, the main obstacle are the huge amount of mines. Mineclearing equipment is even more helpful than any tank or IFV's. Reconnaissance is the most important to detect and clear the frontline from mines (anti-tank mines). Ukraine needs drones with IR sensoric and, besides mine clearing vehicles, maybe cheap drones which are able to detonate those mines. Idk why such drones not already exist, 500g C4 should be enough for a mine. A 300-500$ suicide drone (inclusive cheap optics/IR head) would be very useful when we can save a tank and crew.

Not necessarily, as I have said before it will depend on the damage to the turret ring and the gearing. If they are still alright then its probably repairable, though the question would then be is it worth repairing it? If those things are badly damaged, then yes its a write off. We do not know how bad the damage is, could be either.

There's always a tradeoff with any decision like that. I'm sure most of it comes down to doctrine and how the tanks and supporting forces are intended to be used. The flip side would be Abrams using a gas turbine engine instead of diesel. It adds maintenance and supply line complications, but also comes with advantages.

The turbine engine is a different beast from the usual diesels that are used. The crews need training, however the real bottle neck is the mechanics that have to be specially trained to maintain them.

Its lighter and more powerful than the diesels but you have to supply jet fuel forward... not an easy or safe job.. with any fuel and logistics is always an issue in strike range. The other issue is heat the infra red signature builds up fast on a gas turbine.. 🤔 so harder to hide? So probably better deployed in a breakthrough charge. Rather than stop go movement sniping.

I second the other guy who commented, the issue with Abrams is not crew training, but maintenance personnel training. That turbine engine is unlike anything else anyone else uses, and its incredibly complex even compared to the full power pack of a Challenger II or Leopard II. Going to take time to train the mechanics to repair and properly maintain them.

Tank turrets are designed to be removed you know. The important damage with a popped turret will be damage to the gearing of the turret, and damage to the turret ring itself. If those are badly damaged then you are absolutely right. If they are essentially still intact then the tank is repairable.

yes and no. the rifling is only neccesary for HESH. And there are more effective infantry support rounds availible than that. (DM12 HEAT-FS-Multipurpose, DM11-HE-Frag Airburst etc)

It's predominantly to inpart spin on HESH rounds so that the explosive spreads better upon impact. As you note, it isn't needed for accuracy on other modern rounds.

HESH was prior to composite armor proliferation widely used against armored targets including tanks, and Russians using plenty of armored transporters and older tanks that did not have composite armor (or even newer enemy tanks showing at angles where exposing parts do not have composite armor) in which case they could be hit by Challenger spin-stabilized HESH rounds from ranges Russian armored vehicles have no hope of hitting back with smoothbore guns even if using guided ammunition currently available for Russian crews. Israelis were known to shoot at enemies with their localized 105mm rifled guns equipped Centurions from ranges in excess of 10km at which point most of the ATGMs Russia has will be a long time out of rocket propellant.

@@dpelpal Kharkiv offensive was mostly empty ground. Poor Russian leadership and less than 5K soldiers defending that territory mostly being Chechens. That is why if you watch videos from Civ Div there is almost no combat. The Ukrainians were just sweeping through. In Kherson only due to Himars did the Ukrainians cut off Russian supply lines. The Ukrainians did not forcefully push the Russians out like the Russians did to the Ukrainians in Bhakmut and failed to encircle any Russian unit. Then the Russians conducted several large river crossing and still have fire control on Kherson. Obviously for a smoothbrain like you who can't comprehend that it must be difficult to understand. But look at this new spring/summer/winter/halloween/christmas/new years offensive. In 3 months losing over a third of NATO equipment the Ukrainians have taken Robotine (a village of 480 occupants) and have yet to surpass another 4 lines of extensive Russian lines. That is why this offensive has not mirrored previous offensives because A) Russians are not running away B) Ukraine cannot cut off supply lines. So now after tens of thousands of casualties and rain season starting to come in they only have Robotine to show for it.
