How Ukraine's signal-jamming guns stop Russian drones | DW News

Nearly two years into the war in Ukraine, kamikaze drones have become commonplace on both sides. One effective way to stop them is with drone guns that jam signals between a drone and its operator, preventing it from reaching its battlefield target.

I suggest DW to invite a guest who is even more informed and knowledgeable about the drones and warfare on the ground. Her name is Maria BERLINSKA, she has best knowledge on the ground for the past 10 years, better than any other single advisor in the world. She knows what works and what doesn't. She can tell you that drone guns are becoming outdated. This was relevant 6 months ago. Now its a dome electonic jamming devices fitted to trench or vehicle (can be seen on Ukrainian Bradley APVs). She has a network of schools and instructors teaching Ukrainians to operate all sorts of drone systems. The 1st use of FPV kamikazi drones in the world and the first use of dropping of explosives from drones was made by Ukrainian army and [r]ussians quickly adopted this techniques.

This is already old technology. Using AI a target can be chosen before being spotted from the ground. The drone is released to fly on its own path and is completely independent of any electronic jamming. The pace of change is huge - on both sides.

So the drone is jammed at the frequency it was using before it was jammed so it switches to a predetermined frequency for control and mission resumption. These alternate frequencies can be sequenced so if the alternate frequency is also jammed an successive frequency is selected. Cat and mouse. A "return to base" set of instructions can be installed to recover the drone for another day. AN EMP can be triggered and ALL drones would drop like stones, even "friendly" drones.

Jamming a FPV drone frequency only works if you see it coming. The problem is Russians fly just high enough to not hear or see them. You only know the drone is over head when you get blown up. The Russian FPV drones even got night vision now which is beyond deadIy for exposed troops in a pitch dark field.

There is a decent drone controller built on Arduino that's open source. I suspect a decent amount of Ukrainian coding effort is going into that sort of cat and mouse frequency hopping or battle hardening features. But that's limited to the home grown ones. And Ukraine's manufacturing capacity is limited Vs buying every premade commercial drone Chinese suppliers will sell them. Throw it up "as is" for surveillance. Or pop a 3d printed bomb harness on that goes boom when the wires touch eachother. I've got to hand it to them. The Ukrainians are smart and while they can absolutely to the fancy thing. They are also damn good at doing the easy fast thing very well. Also emp, cute idea but sadly that's more science fiction than fact. Unless you want to pop a nuke in the atmosphere your not getting an emp strong enough for any kind of counter measure.

It´s really scary how fast they adopted that technology, even though it was already around for quite a while in theory. If drone swarms become a normal sight, we might see a return of the ww2 style Flak guns, probably with some form of smart midair detonation capabilities. Anyway, weapons/ammo are going to be much more sophisticated (and expensive) in the near future, I´d guess.

Armor on top of thinnest, because they are armored against other tanks. They assume a direct his from above is artillery or a bomb from aircraft, in which case there is no way to prevent that so why waste effort, add weight and cost and reduce mobility to defend against enormous 155mm shells or 500lb-1,000lb bombs. Javelin and Drones take advantage of this. The upper surface of the lower chassis or the tank, right behind the turret is where the tanks autoloader ammunition is stored. Any ammo in there is going to blow.

I think a drone with a directional antenna array could target these drone guns. It would be especially effective if it could work with multiple targeting drones. It would be a specialized drone, they couldn't do this reasonably with regular kamikaze drones. Just the next phase of cat and mouse. Submarines can navigate without GPS using precision accelerometers. Drones may be able to do short range navigation a similar way.

@@Dave05J I follow several war channels on telegram and watch over 100 FPV drone videos. 90% of the victims don't see the drone coming. Those videos are extremely gruesome so don't go searching for it. There's nothing you can do to stop these drones which account for over 500,000 casualties so far.

It does not seem like laws of war really matter to Russia, or even most countries in an all out war. When a country does a successful massive attack on another country, the other country will respond in any way it can if it feels it has been attacked harshly enough. Perhaps not always true, but in many cases very likely.

The idea that there are laws in war is kind of a farce. War is by definition when all laws are off
