Despite the fact that it’s a war crime to target cultural heritage, cultural sites are often treated as a second front: looted, damaged, or destroyed as a way for an aggressor to assert power, demoralize an enemy, and control - or even erase - a cultural narrative.
From the very beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, identity has been at the center of Putin’s agenda. And as cultural sites all over the country sustain damage, it is becoming increasingly clear that erasing the cultural and historical markers of Ukraine are a key facet of Russia’s plan.
Ukraine is home to a vast array of visual and material culture - museums, monuments, archives, and architecture - all of which is at grave risk of destruction, both collateral and intentional.
We spoke with three experts actively working to safeguard Ukraine’s artistic treasures:

After the war ends, I don't want to be looking around at empty walls. I want to be seeing myself. I want to be seeing my people reflected along with me and I want to make sure that not only my people today are surviving, but all of our ancestors before us, are surviving with us, via their art. As a German I can only state, that rebuilding the cities as they were is although important. After the WW2 most of the cities were rebuild in a modern fashion. Lots of concrete wide streets for cars. Buildings with uniform, fast to build fronts. This has taken a lot of the soul from the cities. If you have been to Germany you might have recognized it. Most of the tourist attractions are farther to the south where the bombers could not reach. Munich, Constance, Nuremberg, etc. If possible at all, please try to rebuild your buildings in a manner that you get at least the feeling of history. There have been so many beautiful train stations in Ukraine. And lots of nice old buildings being hundreds of years old. It is sad that Russian troops are destroying everything indiscriminately.

Fortunatelly, it's not the case here yet. Most of destroyed buildings were common soviet-era multi-storey buildings. Rebuilding them as they were is probably even not desirable. But unfortunately lots of great historical buildings were destroyed\damaged as well.

Most historical City Centers are actually in eastern Germany because they did Not have any Money to build new structures after the war and have only begun rebuilding everything after the reunification

There was a largest private collection of game consoles and old computers in possession of an Ukraine citizen. It was bombed to dust. The owned said (paraphrased) "He must move on and leave this part of his life in the past" It was super heartbreaking news.

As Ukrainian I feel a lot of anxiety. I'm from Lviv and now when I'm walking around I admire every corner of my city and at the same time very worried to see it in ruins because there is all the time possibility that russians can throw bombs wherever they want.

Google maps is like a drive by shooting and it doesn't capture everything, especially in the way that you might see things.

There are no or minimal difference. Most Russians have relatives in Ukraine and Ukraines have relatives in Russia. So I do not understand your point. The only difference is the form of government. The freedom of speech. Democracy thats it. The culture is the same. They speak Russian, there food is like that of Russia. To be honest Ukrainians dont hate Russians, they hate Putin, government and the russian Military.

The title card and 7:20 is a statue of 5th Duke of Richelieu, the first Governor of Odessa by Ivan Martos, and in 3:45 you can see our beautiful Opera Theater. This is one of the main symbols of the city of Odesa. My city. Please, help us preserve our cultural heritage in any way you can. Thank you)

@@tropicalslav931 well even if we exclude those periods (which is not how cultures work), we can still see periods of brief independence where many of still relevant cultural features of Ukraine appear, first we can look at the Kyievan Rus, where the ukrainan trident was used and a language very similar to modern ukraine was mostly spoken. We can also look at the Kozaks, and their many wars for ukrainian independence against poland-lithuania under the leadership of Bohdan Khmelnistky, dating all the way back to the 17th century. The independent Ukrainian state was called "The Army Of Zaporozhie" but its also common to see it called "Hetmanshyna" by historian. We can also look at the period of ukrainian independence from the Russian Empire from 1917 to 1922, which was brief but a very significant part of ukrainian history, where many historically important stuff went down, like the unification of western and eastern ukraine in 1918 or the government setting up a full-fledged Rada that fully controlled the lands from Lviv to Kuban'. And we can also talk about the kinda controversial ukrainian revolutionaries from 1941, led by Stepan Bandera, who fought against both the russians and the germans and the polish. So even if we dont count the historic periods where ukraine was occupied by russia, we still see a very long and very convoluted history, with more than three for the nations sovereignty

This truly makes me realise just how much the Middle Eastern countries of Iraq and Syria lost their own historical and cultural structures, texts and several other things regarding this when the US and Nato invaded and later when those horrible civil wars with Isis occured (those photohraphs are depressing to see). I hope Ukraine doesn't suffer the same horrible fate with it's history like these countries did. History should be 100% be preserved, not destroyed. In the modern era this should be COMMON SENSE but I guess it's sadly not the case and never will be.

is nobody going to point out how gorgeous those paintings are? I will. I’ve seen many wonderful paintings from many countries but those ones feel like some of the most inspiring and delicate to me. They definitely inspire me more than many of Picasso’s own paintings, though maybe that might be Naïve Art more than the skill, since I like that movement more than most of the ones he dabbled in. Still, truly an artistic miracle.

scientific discoveries also get destroyed in a similar way. there’s way too many times where i’ll watch a video on an important find by anthropologists or paleontologists, and it’ll slowly dawn on me that they’re only using a single picture of it. so many finds were destroyed in WWI and WWII

As an Indian, I couldn't imagine if some1 tried to destroy our taj mahal, beautiful based forts, NMoMA, Science Museums, qutb minar, traditional art, beautiful significant edifices... I am so sorry fr wt is happening in ukraine. A civilised, modern society just can not invade another civillised, modern society. This is so sad. Russian news agency RIA posted an editorial by Timofei Sergeitsev entitled "What to do with Ukraine" that called for the complete and utter destruction of Ukraine and its culture - saying Ukraine was incompatible with Russia and needed its name, culture and people to be wiped off the Earth and replaced with a new Russian culture and people. This isn't something that's new - this is what the Soviets have tried to do a 100 years ago. And once again destroying Ukrainian culture does seem to be one of the military objectives at the start of the invasion judging by some of the first targets hit in the invasion. And that was before there would be any time to move culture artifacts to safety. Putin claims Ukraine and Russia share the same heritage - but Ukraine's culture is a mix of influence from Russia and influence from the West, Poland, Lithuania, etc. It's that more Western culture in Ukraine that the Russians want to eliminate so they can impose their own Russian culture in this mythical Ukraine they want to create as the birthplace of Russian culture.

What art & culture Russia doesn't destroy, they have stolen from Ukraine. This was an excellent video, Vox. One aspect overlooked was the destruction and denial of musical treasures. At the turn of the 20th c., Ukrainian composer's works were taken from Ukraine and Ukrainians.

The mere thought of all this art and pieces of culture being destroyed and stolen in wars around the world just brings so much sickness to my stomach. I cried when Notre Dame was burning bc of an accident, but this intentional destruction fills me with rage. All the respect for those that do everything in their power to protect cultural heritage

As an artist, I find this video both educational but in a way disturbing... not only because of the war but how the lesser talked about effects of the war are affecting the country and it's culture. Glory to Ukraine! Unity for all of Humanity!!

I've never believed in the destruction of history, even if it's a statue of Hitler. In my opinion history is there for three reasons, to remember the good times, prevent the repeating of mistakes or both.

This stuff breaks my heart. 💔 As someone who is directly connected to art due to my mom owning a art gallery/framing Business. We have been tasked with caring for people's art, collections, sculptures, etc. And I hate the thought of people destroying creations that are worth more then any amount of money could every bring. These art creations, are not just financial assets, they represent what it means to be human, to express feeling, existing, and you just cannot replace that, in a sense I wish it could be immortal and live on forever in future generations. Wether it be architecture, art, sculptures, movies, play, music, dance, any form of expression, experiences. I wish we could always be able to have the ability to share it and have it impact people, children, their children. It's just such a intangible valuable aspect of life and I hate seeing it be destroyed and lost to time or something else like war...

Great video. Vox also needs to cover destruction of arts and heritage by the government in times of peace, usually in the name of development or money. This happened recently in Bandung, Indonesia where govt destroyed the first Indonesian public pool made during Dutch colonial times and sold the land to real estate developers. Govt in Southeast Asia have destroyed many other historical heritage for money but it seems this kind of destruction went largely unnoticed due to it happening in the times of peace.

Ukraine was on my bucket list before the war. Now to find out that so much artistic heritage and beauty is being destroyed hurts, especially as an artist myself (hobbyist).

I've been to exhibits from Ancient Egypt to Andy Warhol, each experience uniquely thought provoking. criticism is the lowest form of creativity.

Everything in all the museums could go all over rest of the world as traveling exhibits that would both protect the art and raise funds and awareness. The same for Syria and Tibet and other conflict regions

Not unimaginable to move money we did it in colonial times to keep it from falling in the hands of the English before ww1 its only been recovered last year from Swiss vault along with a 2001 recovery by a Zulu family thst was living in the same area for more than 100 years has confirmed to have dug up "at least 4 000 Kruger pounds", three kilometres from the farm of JJ Scholtz, where a statue of President Paul Kruger was found. Analysis of yhose coins apparently show that they were minted in 1889.

The first time I heard of cultural heritage protection was in the ARMA 3 art of war DLC. Video games can be educational, too. Also not only russians are a threat to works of art, unscrupulous art dealers can use the chaos of war to steal art. Not sure that would constitute a warcrime, though.

The city of Lviv is prof of Polish-Ukrainian history, it wasn t the most peaceful one but lets set our differences aside and preserve this beatiful city
