When it comes to diet, there's so much changing and conflicting information flying around that it can feel impossible to know where to look for sound advice. Decades of nutritional misguidance, lobbying, and corrupt food policies have only left us more confused when we head to the grocery store.
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian about Food Compass, a new food rating system aimed to help determine the general healthfulness of different foods and cut through the confusion when it comes to our food choices.
Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, Special Advisor to the Provost, Dean for Policy, and Jean Mayer Professor at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy; and Professor of Medicine at Tufts School of Medicine. His work aims to create the science and translation for a food system that is nutritious, equitable, and sustainable.
Dr. Mozaffarian has authored more than 500 scientific publications on dietary priorities for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and on evidence-based policy approaches and innovations to reduce diet-related diseases in the US and globally. He has served in numerous advisory roles, and his work has been featured in a wide array of media outlets. Thomson Reuters has named him as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.

I actually save money replacing processed junk with fresh whole foods, including some organic items. So one can afford better quality if they eliminate what shouldn't be consumed.

Wow, if this rating system is done well, people shopping in grocery stores will be shocked. And probably confused because what they THOUGHT was 'healthy' aka energy bars, yogurts, etc can be really bad. HOPEFULLY the food manufacturers will change up their ingredients to reflect a healthier content.

We should NOT be eating more whole grains especially wheat. The fiber in these grains has more nutrients...but also more anti-nutrients, so going whole grain is a very mixed bag and very far from some kind of panacea.

What a joke! Why does FDA think they can “label” foods “healthy” when it’s not? Study. Research. Learn. Ask nutritionists! Stay up to date because tomorrow it may change😂100 years ago we didn’t have this many problems did we?

Replace Tea and Coffee with Green Tea and there will be a significant improvement in the health of the population. Removing mineral phosphate preservatives from processed foods will also improve the population's health (especially that of the elderly). Here in the UK Glucose-Fructose syrup has recently been replaced by sugar in many products (especially jams ... even the cheapest of jams).

Absolutely! I agree that replacing regular tea and coffee with green tea can offer several health benefits. Green tea contains high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols, which have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses. I also agree that removing mineral phosphate preservatives from processed foods can have a positive impact on the health of the population, particularly the elderly. These additives have been linked to several health issues, including kidney disease and heart disease. It's great to hear that in the UK, glucose-fructose syrup is being replaced with sugar in many products. This is a positive step towards reducing the consumption of added sugars, which can contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

@@AnnTsungMD Thanks for your reply. I looked into your channel. Wow! You have a fan (an 80 year old with a science background who has been making an exhaustive study of what might be going on as I age). I'm currently having to have dialysis (AKI caused by hydronephrosis) ... but I'm still remarkably fit and very much into my diet. My present focus of interest is centred on the influence of the Parathyroid gland on the health of older people ... and, as I have kidney related anemia, erythroferrone and hepcidin are a focus of my thinking. I'm very wary of antibiotics and, so far, have kept the bugs at bay with s garlic sourced product called Allicin Max ... much to the bewilderment of my Consultant who can't figure out why I keep bouncing back within a couple of days from dialysis induced infections caused by the bugs inhabiting the hospital ... despite refusing the broad spectrum antibiotics she gives everyone else.
@AnnTsungMD
@AnnTsungMD Жыл бұрын
@@jordanpeters3746 Your interest in the influence of the parathyroid gland on the health of older people is an important area of research, especially given your kidney-related anemia. It's also interesting that you've found success in using garlic-based products to fight off infections, even when broad-spectrum antibiotics have not been effective. It's always good to explore alternative methods of treatment, but it's important to discuss any new supplements or treatments with your healthcare provider to ensure they don't interfere with your medical care. Keep up the good work and best of luck with your ongoing research!

This acts like Americans can't understand bad from good food. The population really just needs to know good, better, best foods. They will make choices. No matter what I can't go with ANY cereals being said they are okay to eat. If you put it on a list saying it is okay people will think it's ok. All processed food is processed end of statement. I believe this interview was to help this research look good when it's not.

We came up with a scoring system to explain healthy foods / unhealthy foods to our young children: - Healthy food: eat much as you want, eg fruit and veg - Medium healthy: eat with moderation, eg meat, dairy, pasta, rice etc - Not healthy: eat a little only, eg candy, sugary treats, French fries etc
@AnnTsungMD

That's a great approach to teaching young children about healthy eating habits! It's important to instill these values early on in life so that they can develop good habits that will stay with them as they grow older.
@szvetlana1000

@@AnnTsungMD Now they make a game out of telling me what good and not so good (or “medium” good). With new foods they ask: Mom, is this healthy? They know we go into all this trouble to eat well to live a long and happy life, free of disease. I have a confession to make. I’m from Europe and moved to the US 2 years ago. When I first went to Walmart I got upset at the awful offering. Isles upon isles of processed, junk food. People looking unhealthy. It was shocking and that’s when I realised food culture is very different here.

This sounds good, but how can it be that 5 of the top 8 foods listed under Grains in the Food Compass list are packaged breakfast cereals, with Cheerios getting an almost perfect score? Dr Hyman, can it be that industrial packaged foods aren't all bad?

Because they are based on lies, do fortified cereals contain beneficial nutritional substances? Yes it does, does that make it healthy? Hell no. Look into milk, you'll be amazed how many lies and personal agendas are sold as main stream science and nutrition.

Belly of the beast. No shame. The wheat cereals are healthier than butter and eggs total sellout guy. He’s not worthy of any time. He’s the epitome of I was just going along in the 1940s. Except this time willfully harming billions IMO. Most of your interviews give me hope. This one just makes me sad. He knows he’s doing harm. So I assume at some level he’s suffering as well. When he looks out at the mass suffering of Americans. He should realize he is front and center. He is the seed oil king. Arguably the most harmful. I’m sure he doesn’t use it, yet defends them everywhere.
