I heard a rumour that you watched this video and liked it.
Umbrella Academy Season Three recently just came out and it features one of the best character transitions that has been done yet with Elliot Page's Viktor Hargreeves. So let's talk about what they did so right and why it really matters that it was successful.

12:53 if I remember correctly Elliot page spoke to the writers and said he was fine with continuing to play as vanya, but the writers decided to change the character to make Elliot more comfortable and cause it was just the right thing to do. I honestly love that so much, they went out of their way and rewrote a part of the script just to make him more comfortable, it just shows how close everyone on this show is and how much they respect each other. Edit: I think it was actually even Gerard Way who decided to change the character for Elliot

The thing I give to the writers, is no one uses it as a way to get to Viktor. Like Allison who largely wants to tear Viktor to pieces never misgenders him. Or Five's speech about Viktor being a villain and he would kill him. Not once is him being himself used against him, only his actions.

I think I am learning something here. I myself am just a cis woman and I'm content with that. I am however trying to understand the struggles that I'm unaware of and I have not had myself. So when it comes to the UA treatment of Victor, I guess what kinda rubbed me the wrong way was the fact that I felt really pandered to. I don't think my angle comes from transphobia, but like, why was not a single brother of Victor struggling with this change, like many people in real life would? Why did no one hick up with pronouns or the wrong name once? In my mind it didn't feel like representation of how transition is like for a trans person, it is more like what ideal transition would be like if there was no bigotry in the world. I struggled for a bit to see why it was written like that when the previous season did such a good job at portraying the isdues with racism. I think I have now learned that many trans people appreciate this angle, and this was not written for me to learn, but for trans people to feel comforr, to feel that there could be a world that is accepting... I failed to consider that.

@corneliahanimann2173 viktor is in an entirely new timeline where no one but his siblings knows who he even is or was. all this season is showing is that there is no bigotry in his family, which makes a lot of sense for each of them. messing up pronouns would have probably been more realistic (because sometimes it IS an honest mistake) but that would have been adding it just to add it, and the writers probably felt subjecting trans viewers to such a thing for no real reason (AKA it has nothing to do with the plot) would be cruel. and it would have been.

Elliot coming out really struck me. I came out when I was 13, and a huge reason for that was that I’d get told I looked a lot like Elliot Page in Juno. It was a class joke cause the science teacher was so taken aback by it that he had to bring other teachers in to show them. After plenty of “don’t go getting pregnant now” and other pregnant jokes, it was kind of the uncomfortable straw that broke the camel’s back for me. 9 years later, the star of Juno turned out to ALSO be trans. He inadvertently helped me figure out my identity all that time ago and now he’s also going on that journey. Wild stuff.

I think the important thing here was how NOT big of a deal it’s presented as. It’s not treated as this season-long build up or shocking revelation, the easiest pitfall to fall into. It goes to show that along with representation, normalization is just as important.

One of the things to remember is that Page was always trans. Whether he knew it or not, the writers, the public... even if everyone was ignorant of that fact, Page was a trans man through the previous seasons. So purposefully or not he was acting as an in the closet and/or egg trans guy. It may seem ironic now that Page was playing a character in previous seasons who was going through a process of self discovery and finding previously hidden or suppressed aspects of themselves. But is it really ironic or did the casting people see something in Page (almost assuredly subconscious) that made them feel that he could really play a character with hidden facets? Was Page drawn to the role for that very reason? Having him come out and his family react in a low key way allowed the previous seasons' version of him to kind of melt into the new season. Now in retrospect it seems obvious because even if we weren't aware of them, there were indications even subliminally. As every trans person discovers, you are always the same person regardless of your gender presentation and known identity. Page's performance of Victor coming out felt so genuine because it *was* genuine. Why it's vital to give trans actors trans roles and also why it felt so smooth and real in this specific case.

One thing I truly love is how Viktor's journey parallels Elliot's own journey. First lives as a woman, then comes out as a lesbian, then comes out as a trans guy. (And I DON'T count Viktor's relationship with Leonard as anything else but manipulation. I'm not erasing bisexuality, I just don't consider comphet and abusing a traumatized person as valid relationship.) It's really nice the writers just went "sure" and added this. The best trans representation doesn't impact the main story. Viktor isn't a trans character. Viktor is a character, who also happens to be trans. His transness doesn't define exclusively him and doesn't affect the main story, which is something bad representation and transphobes don't understand.
@msjkramey

Let me have bi representation! And just because he was being manipulated in that relationship doesn't mean it was comphet. He was a victim of abuse, plain and simple
@ItsAllNunya
@ItsAllNunya Жыл бұрын
Comphet is a concept invented by a transphobic biphobic aphobic terf lesbian you may want to reconsider how deeply you buy into what she said. The general gist sounds intuitive so reading through the document doesn't raise many alarm bells esp if ur not aspec(she's so aphobic its gross) but it's well known she's a trash person and that asexuality, aromanticism, bisexuality, and transgender people are real and valid all of which Comphet does not believe. Also, abusive relationships are still relationships. It sucks, but it's true. Don't diminish that shit it's actually kinda dangerous to say "if it's abuse it didn't count". That's like virginity for dating, and virginity is also bullshit fakey fake nonsense so bite your tongue about the way you're talking about relationships just because you feel weird about bi people even if you don't realize you do.

As a trans person I loved the trans character portrait and representation, as an autistic person I didn't love the neurodivergent character portrait and representation, but i guess it was better than average. maybe harlan is just a spiritual mystical dude that believes in frequency waves but the show kinda did not separated the character interests from the cliche "disabled people have superpowers, they can see things we can't". Just because some of us are more sensible to sound, it doesn't mean we can feel frequencies others (with the same superpower) were not able to feel. It could be an aspect of harlan superpowers but, if it is, they should have had another approach. but it still is better than average i guess. one last thing: HIS HEADPHONES SUCK not relaxing at all. he can still hear the baby crying and the bus motor.
@kindacalled777
@kindacalled777 Жыл бұрын
I have mixed feelings on Harlan, because I agree with your analysis of the cliche. I appreciated that when he was a child, Vanya and his mother didn't treat him like an object. It was a break from these shows with the 'autism mom' character whose entirely personality is hating their child for acting like a normal child, whilst claiming to love them. That is such a low bar lol. Also I think that adult Harlan's actor portrayed his body language well, without going over the top stereotypical like those same shows. They showed sensory issues realistically. But then he died so soon after only a couple scenes so rip.

I mean yeah the headphones are from the 60s- they didn’t have Boze noise cancelling ones yet. Also maybe you missed the point- Harlan was more likely than neurotypical people to be overstimulated by sounds and frequencies which is why he was so tortured and out of control having Viktor’s powers.

What I hated about Harlan (in season 2) is the scene where his mom restrains him during a meltdown, which is probably the absolute worst thing you could do in that situation, and that has KILLED autistic kids before. There is basically no transmasc rep, even less that is done well, and this is so important. In general, but also just to me personally. Loved this season. I also don't think Allison's arc was bad or came out of nowhere. I mean I hate her, but it does make sense looking back, she's always had the tendency to be very manipulative, and now that she lost the people who were keeping her from using her power to be cruel (mainly her daughter) it makes sense that she resorts to that behaviour.

@@kurtkunkle3956 Doesn't mean it was consistent with the rest of the show though. They never gave a reason why she blames Victor for everything even though Victor was easily the least logical person to blame or why she only chose that time for it or why she suddenly went from a good (albeit inconsistently so) person at the end of season 2 to a remorseless murderer. They were also inconsistent about how they wanted the viewers to see her. Most of the season is clearly written to make us sympathize with Allison & blame Victor for being upset that his son was murdered but near the end, they suddenly remembered it was supposed to be an Allison villain arc so they suddenly have other people start acknowledging that Allison is acting crazy & dangerous instead of just inexplicably blaming Victor. Then, she gets rewarded at the end because of course she does & we're supposed to be happy for her even though she's kidnapping her ex's daughter for eternity. It's also terrible timing because they wrote Allison as such a consistently reasonlessly scummy person toward Victor specifically that it ends up being wildly out of Allsion's new characterization for her to be so accepting. According to her new characterization, she'd be dead naming Victor constantly, just out of spite & everyone else would be praising her for it because they're her zombies now because one of the writers (I forgot his name) loves her too much. The show would be better if Allison died in season 1 when it seemed like she did. Victor is only poorly written in the same situation in which everyone else is poorly written. Which is whenever Allison is around. Victor gets over the death of his son after a few minutes because the show couldn't try to make us sympathize with Allison if Victor was crying & behaving like a real person would after their kid is murdered by their sister.

Another thing I really loved, which was probably coincidental, but the episode in which Viktor transitions is also an episode that's just so full of Viktor having agency in a way that he didn't before. Season 1 and 2 he spends a lot more time reacting to things outside of his control, than he is initiating the things himself. Which makes sense for his story. But season 3 episode one immediately follows his transition several decisions that directly push the story forward, in a way that perfectly reinforces his character arc of "Viktor finally understands who he is, and this has given him the confidence to fully act on his impulses and pursue his goals, just as much as the other siblings do". He was my favourite character from season 1 and I'm so happy that his transition was written so well.

i’m hopeful for trans actors/performers to see this and know it’s possible to come out and it be a part of their art instead of detracting from it and that their transness is not a burden to keep secret, their body is theirs and not their director & audience’s and authenticity does not definitively mean death of a career even if it’s much harder

Hearing how they made this decision, how they decided to write it, and the result of all of that, this is the example of how to deal with trans representation when it comes to cast and characters. When Eliot came out, he mentioned that he was willing to continue to play Vanya as a woman, but the creators of the show didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, and put in the work to change the character in a way that doesn't take away from who he is, but still mirrors the changes the actor went through. And the other characters' reactions are such a great example of how to react to someone coming out. In an ideal world, that's how everyone would react.

I feel so sad that they gave Viktor a loving, supportive sister, just to have that sister turn around and ruin his life. Not only that, but to blame him for it and play the victim, inflicting darvo on him until HE apologises. They really set it up for Allison to be supportive to Viktor, just for her to turn around and destroy him. I hate what the writers did in the later half of the season.
@HB-eh9zf
@HB-eh9zf Жыл бұрын
I see where the frustration comes from, but Allison doesn't stop being supportive of Viktor's trans identity, she get upset with him because she's been the supportive sister since season 1, and keeps getting hurt by it. She's always tried with him, making mistakes, but trying to mend their relationship. Even after he almost killed her, she chose to save him over the world, their other brothers, and her daughter. And everytime she's stuck by him, she loses loses the life she's built up and loved ones and is expected to start over. The trauma of losing her voice, her daughter basically three times, her husband, and getting stuck in 1960s America in such a short amount of time is effecting her. But she's the collected one, so she tries to stay cool. She was barely holding on, literally trying to rumor her self and even considering self-harm/suicide, but this is what broke her. She's a mother who child doesn't even exist, she doesn't even have a picture of her. And she is still on Viktor's side while she is struggling, it's only when she learn Viktor lied to her she snaps. Him lying about Harlan about killing their mothers (meaning to Allison, killing her daughter) isn't about Viktor just lying, it's that he promised to have her back and he didn't. She chose Viktor over the entire world, her own daughter, because she loved him so much. And he couldn't do the same for his own sister, or for Claire, for someone who kmew Viktor knew for a month 60 years ago, who is more a less a stranger to Viktor. It was showing his love for her and her daughter, is limited. He's not someone she can't trust to help her anymore. She's a character that hasn't really been angry up until this point. Shes always been the one to instantly forgive Viktor, not matter how much she was hurt. She's warranted to be angry over the loss of her daughter, after all this time. She made the wrong choices, and was extremely cruel at times, but she's in grief, and Viktor's emotions getting the best of him hurt Allison too. Neither deserve it and it's hard to watch, but we understand why. And even harder knowing multiple things she said and did were just to hurt Viktor, because she's so hurt and has been quietly hurting for so long. And in the end, her betrayal of the family was bad, but understandable with her desperation. She actually promised their safety, including Viktor, not knowing what she was promising. She's a desperate mother longing for her child, seeing no one do anything, she took matter into her own hands. She was saving them along with her daughter, even if it meant betraying them. I can't say she's playing the victim because she's not trying to play at anything, she's genuinely in grief and angry about everything. Yes Viktor is trans and Allison of course still respects his identity, but that doesn't mean he's flawless or didn't make mistakes and has the right to be angry. I was really worried about that as a trans guy myself, that they would only baby Viktor and he'd not be allowed to do anything misguided. Viktor means well with Harlan, but doesnt get anyone get a say over their own fates and is selfish with his decision with Harlan (not that Harland deserved any of the stuff that happened to him or wouldve happened to him). Viktor is also used to seeing himself as the victim, and is expecting an apology immediately after his, unintentionally making it look like he's only sorry to he can be forgiven. Obviously he does deserve an apology, but it was clear it wasn't the time or place (not that that had the time, but he could've atleast waited a few hours). Allison's forgiven him for so much for a long time, and he was expecting her to again, not considering how hurt she was. Again, this is not to say actually Allison was right and Viktor was wrong, or Viktor is bad or Allison didn't made many many bad choices, and it's more complicated than Allison trying to ruin Viktor's life and just playing victim, and Viktor did nothing but apologize. It's two character who are extremely vulnerable and hurt by each other. Allison is meant to mirror Viktor's action of season one, where one is doing terrible actions, but we understand why even tho we know its wrong, and the others well meaning but misguided attempts unintentionally pushed them further into doing those wrong things, when they only meant to help people. It's definitely wasn't perfectly well done, especially not as well done as season one did it, but I'm glad to see the attempt and Allison finally allowed to be angry with the hurt she received over the years and Viktor finally acknowledging externally how he's hurt others.

I was really glad they didn’t make any of the characters transphobic because as a trans person it kinda woulda ruined their character for me and also like when I sit down to watch TUA I want to be immersed into a fantasy world with time travel, superpowers, and apocalypses, not the real-world transphobia that is already tiring enough for me. I watch TUA with my family when new episodes come out and I’m in town and my father was a little put off that nobody was transphobic because, “it’s not realistic,” but like… neither is a character who can summon tentacles or an old man in a kid’s body who can also teleport and time travel. Really glad TUA didn’t go that way. It would have also reminded me of those people who insist that high fantasy where magic exists has to have lots of racism and sexism to be ‘realistic’ because, “that’s the way it was in the dark ages,” as if dragons, magic, elves, unicorns, etc. existed and are ‘realistic to’ the medieval era. Obvs if an author wants to include those aspects that’s fine, but not all fantasy media has to be permeated with modern-day bigotry. EDIT: typo

I really loved Viktor's whole arc in S3, so well done! (I refer to Viktor as the show character, and Vanya as the comics character) I will say that it was REALLY unfortunate that they included Allison's vicious anger at Viktor in the same season where Viktor comes out... In the comics, Allison's hatred of Vanya comes in the Dallas arc while Vanya is in a coma from her Apocalypse Suite, but the show changed that into Viktor having amnesia and actually being a part of the story, so it was kind of an adaptation of the comics, but it was really unfortunately timed...

Didn’t love season three as much. I felt like there was a lot of wasted potential with the Sparrows, character moments that just felt wrong (no one defending Viktor when Allison choked him out, and then being told to suck up his trauma and stop crying). I enjoyed the season okay, just not as much as the others. All that said, Viktor coming out was just perfect!!! One of the highlights, and it made so much sense within the narrative. This guy’s been drugged into feeling numb his whole life, and then when he’s off the drugs and living with Sissy, he starts to realize things about himself he never knew. Hey, I like girls, or at least Sissy! And then given another chance to chill when they return to the “present”, he gets to focus on himself again and fully comes out. And while I’m super mad at Allison, I understand her character as well. Like, it’s not bad writing imo that she’s acting this way. She lost her child and now her husband, and the hallucinations really drill in that the grief is heavily affecting her. It doesn’t make it okay how she hurts her family, but I understand that she’s dealing with her grief in a highly unhealthy way. I’m mad at her, but I feel bad for her. More ranting, sorry. How come Viktor is the emotional crybaby for making it all about his trauma? He didn’t even do that, Allison did! And she doesn’t get called the same? No one even acknowledges that she’s being completely unreasonable?? I had to stop at that part and breathe. In my mind, I was like “Fuck this. Once the world is saved, Viktor needs to ditch this so-called family. They’re so toxic.” It just seemed like they sided against Viktor automatically, because in their eyes, he’s always the problem. Fuuuuuuck, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I needed to get that out until I wrote it. If you disagree with me, that’s alright. A lot of this is stuff that affected me personally somehow. I’m am immovably Team Viktor tho, haha.

Before I say anything, bit of background. I am a Cis male, but I have been involved throughout the process of a very close friend transitioning. I had mixed feelings about how they handled Victor's transition. On the one hand, I fully agree that it was nice to see a show that just let it happen, and didn't give him a hard time about it. On the other, it didn't ring very true to me. I have whitnessed people who have no mal intent but don't quite know what's going on put their foot in it, and I have whitnessed people who are slow to adjust (but again, mean no mallace) accidentally misgender my friend, and the hurt and pain it cause the friend, and the awkwarness that caused to the group. Hell, I've done it myself, if you've known someone for a prolonged time as one name and set of pronouns, it will take a while to teach yourself to naturally use a different name and set of pronouns. That will cause friction. I feel it would be very helpful to show the reality of people who've (as far as we know) never seen a close friend or family member transition reacting how people would react, for better or worse. Showing that the journey will be hard, but they get there in the end is a far more realisitic and beneficial thing to show than 'everyone you love just gets it' as nice as that would be. I've since had a 2nd friend (from a different frendship group) transition, and honestly, this shows depiction of people adjusting to someone's transition feels a lot like people who've seen it before, and are therefore able to adapt and carry on far quicker than they once might have been able to. It is still great to see how the show handled Elliot and Victor's transitions, and I'm glad they did go in a positive direction though.

I'm a trans guy, I agree that as I have transitioned I have seen a lot of people put their foot in their mouth on accident or mess up. Or you know. On purpose too. While the way they handled the transition might not entirely be realistic, I think it was the best way for this story. This is the kind of coming out trans people want for themselves. To have it just be accepted and to slowly fit into their lives and move on. Showing the darker reality would have thrown in perhaps more conflict than they wanted with the overarching conflict being the story they were already telling, and letting us have a comfortable transition gave trans people hope we could also find something similar and cis people an example of how to show love to the people they care about if they come out. Realism isn't always the best thing to see. Sometimes you need to see the best case so you can see that you do in fact deserve to be treated with the same respect and dignity as everyone else. I also am so glad they did go in a positive direction, it was very refreshing amid a slew of terrible representation.

I think writing in any misgendering, accidental or on purpose, might have hit a little bit too close to home for Elliot. I find it fascinating how Victor's character is so intertwined with Elliot Page as an actor. The fact that costuming and makeup typically defaulted to what Elliot Page would usually wear and the similar journey of coming out as a lesbian, then as a trans man, makes the character feel authentic in a way that doesn't clash with the grand stakes/unrelatable superhero family backstory. It'd be interesting to see how the writers interacted with Elliot Page to craft the character and performance.

Trans guy here. Being accepting is well and good an all but I would appreciate a bit more realism. A bit of interaction, asking questions to try to understand, to make it feel like the acceptance they are giving is through their efforts and feels earned. like they asked questions, learned and grew and the relationship develops to be better and more accepting from the mutual love and respect they have for eachother instead of him coming out and every person just being like "Okay." Feels like something is missing there.

@SeychellesSunshine For me, it's about setting an example. Most people will not get it the first time, they will make mistakes, and not for harmful purposes. And those people that try and mess up could feel disheartened and feel like they are bad seeing exclusively examples where no one ever struggles. "Like if you do say their given name ever you are a bad person. If you ask questions, that's you trying to tear apart their identity rather than put the pieces together to understand them better." I don't think painting a rigid picture of acceptance is helpful for the majority of people. Even trans people don't usually just accept the moment it is noticed we are indeed trans, and we have experience with it. Even for us, it takes time to learn about ourselves and accept that. So I think its only fair that others are provided the same space to learn, grow, and understand.

for me I feel like the reason they don't do that is because the story isn't about Viktor's transition. He's transitioned, but the story's about the same character driven end-of-the-world stuff it always is. Like how in season 1 Klaus has his boyfriend, but Klaus' story isn't about him being gay. They could have made a storyline focusing on his transition, but I get the impression that the writers didn't want to do that because that's not what they wanted season 3 to be about. I remember reading somewhere that they didn't want to make a big deal about Viktor's transition, but can't remember where or who said it.

Little fun fact it was at Gerard Way's insistence that Elliott's character have a similar story to his own life. Edit: never been prouder to be a mega fan of MCR

I hate when TV shows make a big deal of representation and shove it down your throat, Because when they do that? It doesn't feel genuine. It feels like they're just ticking check boxes and patting themselves on the back for being progressive, and then the focus turns into "we're so progressive, who needs the story anymore?" UA didn't do that. They just had Vonya come out as Viktor, had his family support and love him, and let the story continue. They showed Viktor becoming confident and comfortable in his own skin. They showed that coming out as trans didn't change who Viktor was, he was still the same kind sibling they knew. It was just handled perfectly

It is kinda sad that Klaus does refer to Victor as his 'daughter' during a chat with Reginald. Because besides that, it does it quite well.

a factor in my opinion is that gerard way, a producer and the creator of the umbrella academy, is very much a part of the trans community!

I think this series has the best coming out scene that I've ever seen in media, wether that be in terms of gender or sexuality. They didn't make it this whole big thing because it shouldn't be. Trans people are just people, and should be treated as such. Sure, it's fine to celebrate trans identities when its reasonable to do so, but I'd much prefer stuff like this over the whole "LGBT people are such beautiful, lovely, wholesome, etc beings that should be put on a pedestal and given praise for their 'courage' to live their best lives!!!!" ordeal that a lot of other media tend to fall into. Like I'm not something to be praised and shit, I'm not doing a courageous act by transitioning, I'm just some guy who happened to be assigned a gender at birth that doesn't match who I am as a person. Me being a trans man is a part of me, but its not all I am, which goes for trans people in general. Literally all these types of interactions, whether in fiction or real life, need to be is, "Hey, this is who I am." "Oh, that's nice. I respect that." Simple yet supportive. I like the fact that they had each sibling show a different kind of support with Allison showing the same love as before, Luther not really knowing how to support him yet trying his best, and the others just kinda being like, "Oh, cool. Anyway..." in their own way in the context of the moment. That's very realistic and it's a good representation of a supportive family reacting to their family member coming out. I absolutely love how they handled Elliot's transition in the context of the story and Viktor's character, and I appreciate the effort the writer's put in to make it feel natural. This is one of the best examples of trans representation in media as far as I'm concerned, especially for trans men.

I am so happy that Elliott Paige was able to have their character on the show come out as trans as well. It would have been hell on the mental health to have to play the part of a female character despite identifying as male in real life. Like stepping back in time back to the person you were uncomfortable being. I am so happy He is able to play a male character victor

She played as a pregnant woman before... Didn't seem that uncomfortable. For people who lie by pretending that gender is different than sex, you guys sure do like to use biological terms. "He" is playing a "male" character? If you're going to conflate sex and gender, so am I. Just not in the way you'd like.

Honestly, while a lot of this was done well, at the same time I feel it could ahve been done better, it still felt a bit abrupt and forced, maybe just one or two conversations before the haircut, maybe with Alison just saying how "I don't really feel feminine." or some sort of insight to how he came to the conclusion, we don't really get a way to hear his thoughts before it's allready happened.

The trans plotline fits the show but Allison doesn't fit into that plotline, which makes sense because Allison doesn't fit into the show in general. They could never decide how good or evil they wanted her to be until they suddenly decided "Let's have her be a remorseless murderer & r@pist & especially hate Victor to the point that it's like hating Victor is her whole personality."
